Challenge: Read Charles Jacobs & Avi Goldwasser: "Betrayal: The Failure of American Leadership."

Attached is something I wrote before starting to read the book I just challenged you to read.  It is posted in a memo of mine to be released in a few days.

I have made this argument for decades and always cite Norman Podhoretz's book: "Why Jews  Are Liberal."

a) Since most Jews do not understand the thrust of their religion, as Norman writes, they believe they can accomplish their goal through politics.

b) When you assert you are God's chosen people, you make enemies and stir jealousies.  Exclusivity comes at a price.

c) Finally, when you claim you want to live a secular life while retaining your traditional ways you cannot have it both ways.
Again this is seen and felt as a put me down.

There are other reasons for anti-Semitism, for sure, but these 3, I believe, go a long way toward explaining the issue/problem.

THE FIRE THIS TIME

Hezbollah is at war with Israel. Attacking Israel with rockets and other munitions across its northern border, Hezbollah has displaced some 80,000 Israelis from their homes. The depopulation, you might say, is rising.

This week northern Israel has been on fire as a result of Hezbollah’s attacks. See, for example, Stuart Winer’s Times of Israel story (and accompanying photos) “‘A nightmare’: North cries out for action amid widespread fires sparked by Hezbollah” and Matti Friedman’s Free Press account. The JNS reports that “fires rage as Hezbollah ramps up attacks.”

The JNS story includes a tweet by former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett — the featured speaker at the Center of the American Experiment’s fantastic annual dinner last night. Bennett puts it this way (in Hebrew, translation via Google): “The fire is spreading. Hezbollah is firing heavy volleys into Nahariya, Katzrin, Metula, Kiryat Shmona and beyond all the border settlements. Places that were flourishing and beautiful became cities of ruins. Some of the evacuated residents are already planning their lives elsewhere. This is a serious strategic event.”

I have sat on these stories this week until I could get to them. Now comes Michael Oren to deliver the news in the concise video below.

Ambassador Oren states that the dire situation in Israel’s north is “unknown” while photos of President Biden and Secretary Blinken appear on the screen. They obviously know all about it, but they don’t want Israel to deal with it. As any reader of Oren’s own Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israel Divide (2015) would know — the heart of the book chronicles his experience with the Obama administration as Israel’s ambassador to the United States — they want Israel to keep quiet and let them play patty-cake with Iran.
