Continue To Spiral Down Or Embrace Solutions
My Prologue:

About 6 months ago I chose to try and get a more national reputation
so I selected American Thinker as my
conduit. I began writing memos in 1960, dictated to a secretary who then typed and
mailed them. Today, being
retired, I have no secretary, type them myself and email them.
I never took a course in writing. Several of the American Thinker editors are helping me
to specifically write
for their readership. I mostly get rejected when I cram multiple subjects into one Op Ed
This essay is about the economic plight America. I have preached for decades, we are on a
dangerous profligate
course which, if continued, will assuredly destroy our nation.
Though, like my mother, I am a pessimist by nature, apparently I also am able, when
convincing facts are evident,
to change and see and embrace the positive.
I must have a residual of my father's love of life and positive outlook in me.
I am an only child and my mother, I believe, was born chronically depressed. I came t
o this conclusion
after my many psychiatric sessions with therapists who were Freudian disciples and
believed strongly in the
influence of Oedipus.
My mother was very capable and when she set her mind to tackle something she did so..
She was a marvelous
cook and baker. She ironed shirts better than most laundries and her needlepointing was
superb.
Her goal in life was to protect my father from the slings and arrows aimed at him because
he was an outspoken
feisty Jewish lawyer who believed black citizens were entitled to their civil rights. We lived in
Birmingham which
was Bull Connor territory.
During WW 1, when she was a mere child, she sang with the local Gus Edwards
New York Band
selling . War
Bonds and she was called "Baby Estelle.
She also was shy.. I remember, when I was 6 years of age, she would only play and sing i
n our homes and for her
own satisfaction. I also remember she had a beautiful vice. Her father, Alex, sang in local
New York opera and he
too had a wonderful voice. I know because when he and my grandmother, Jeanette, lived
in Birmingham my
mother's parents would come for Sunday brunch and after the dishes were washed and put
away my mother and
her father would sing while my grandmother played the piano. Then my grandfather laid down o
n our couch, took a
nap and covered himself with the local newspaper like a bum. I also remembered when he
sang the veins in his
neck expanded.
If opposites attract, my mother and father were well suited.
At the time, her father was a shoe salesman in Birmingham, at Pizitz Department Store.
My father to be, played
pinochle with my grandfather, Alex, and I learned, much later in life, from my father's brother,
Jesse who spilled the
beans because he thought I already knew, my mother. eloped, I believe at 18 with an Italian
friend. and Alex called
my father, to be, to annul her spirited action. My future father did so, fell in love and married
her so the story goes.
I never confronted them and they never went into detail but my father assured me I was his son.
My mother also carried undying grudges. Before her parents moved to Birmingham, they lived
in New York and her
father was a shoe salesman..
His sister, Helen, owned a successful ladies' store that catered to the wives of South American
Dictators and thus
Stein and Blaine was able to survive the Depression.
Helen employed her brother, my mother's father, to run the elevator and dressed him in the
popular "Call For Phillip
Morris Johnny Suit," cap and all. My mother felt this was demeaning and never forgave Helen.
When she told me
how she felt, I thought to myself her father at least had a job when so many men were unemployed..
Move the clock forward and before my folks retired they religiously watched Johnny Carson..
The next morning, .invariably, my father would rise and shine. come to the breakfast table
immaculately dressed,
smelling of a splash of a delightful male cologne.
He would fold and read the morning newspaper, have orange juice, hot coffee, his favorite
cereal and mostly fluffy
scrambled eggs.
To his right on the wall was a perfect needlepoint which said: "Getting Up Get's Me Down."
My father never drove a car, so after finishing his breakfast either my mother would drive
him down Red
Mountain, some 4 miles to his office, or he called a cab, or walked across the street wait for
a city bus or hitch a ride with a friend. who stopped..
During election season, if some friend who did not vote as he thought they should, he would
wave them on until
a suitable voter offered him a ride.
Why all this background family stuff? Because I want to set the stage for why though, I believe
I am prone to be
cynical, I am also capable of rational thinking and can be persuaded to make a positive decision..
So what does all of this family stuff have to do with our dire federal deficit which I always knew
would hit us but
never could predict when.
Returning to the matter of America's unabated deficit spending and the ominous potential of
spiraling out of control
consequences, I believe, lends itself to 5 positive ideas and Trump is the only candidate
capable of doing so
because he has the :chutzpah" to tweak Xi's nose.
Recently the Wall Street Journal's' Editorial Board published an excellent editorial which laid
out the statistical
implications of our many trillion dollar debt position.. We are spending 29% of GDP and that
is untenable. The
interest alone equals what we spend on our military.
Gerald Seib recently wrote an excellent Op Ed entitled " Will Debt Sink The American Empire?
I always believed William Wadsworth hit the ball out of the park when he wrote: "The world is t
oo much with us;
late and soon, Getting and Spending, we lay waste our powers.
"Well folks, a recent we are there.
4 POSITIVE DEBT REDUCTION IDEAS
1) Recently Trump proposed a solution to illegal immigration but has not fleshed it out fully.
However, this is
what I believe he intends.
Allow any illegal immigrant, who has a connection with an American citizen, has no "Rap Sheet"
and is,,
willing to go to college and/or a trade school to earn a degree can, then become a legal citizen.
2) The embrace of AI would likely enhance the productivity of this graduate. who would produce,
not only,
revenue, but would enhance social tranquility, reduce the level and cost of crime and you can
envision the
rest.
3) Link the election of a pro-energy president and V. P willing to open Anwar, in order to flood
the world with clean
American oil, natural and liquid gas, and this would solve demand issues and place the cost of
energy/gasoline etc
.on a downward path.
3) This single hard ball, event would re-establish America as a power and Trump could then tell
XI we demand
reimbursement for Covid and $3 trillion of American debt China holds will not be redeemed.
4) Finally, all revenue and profit from Anwar production would be designated to debt reduction
and additional
legislation would forbid grubby politicians from exploiting these funds on their own pet wants.
Inflation would stop it's upward path, social tranquility should expand, Russian and Iranian
financial sources would
be corralled and , again, you know the rest.
