Netanyahu’s Sad US Visit

By Sherwin Pomerantz

In Israel today fighting continues in Gaza in a number of locations in response to information developed by Israel’s security services.   Tit-for-tat activity continues on the northern border with Lebanon with damage sustained in Kiryat Shmona, along with any number of fires resulting from Hizballah rocket fire.

To the disappointment of the residents of the north who remain evacuated, the Ministry of Education announced today that the school year will not start on September 1st in the evacuated areas

of the north but will function in a yet to be explained “new program.”

But the real news is in Washington, where Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived early Tuesday to give his address to the US Congress later today.  Sadly he faced a whole host of issues there as those of us who thought he should not have made the trip at this time suspected he would.

  1. On landing he realized he had a rather empty schedule without confirmed meetings with either Pres. Biden, VP Harris or former Pres. Trump.  All of those meetings seem now to be in place but it was depressing to see the “down mood” of our Prime Minister at his meeting with hostage parents on Tuesday, given the absence of anything on the schedule except “the speech” and a meeting with Christian Evangelical leaders.

  1. The meeting with the hostage families was, of course, just with the families of the five American hostages still being held by Hamas.  Afterwards, one parent was asked his impression of the meeting and he responded that the answer is always the same, “We think we are close and are doing our best to move forward.”  Given its been 292 days and counting that answer does not provide a lot of solace.

  1. Outside the US Capitol and on surrounding streets there were two types of noisy demonstrations against Netanyahu’s visit.  A large number of anti-Israel protestors made their displeasure about his visit clear as they chanted the standard phrases that have become symbolic of anti-Israel protests since October 7th

  1. A second group of pro-Israel but frustrated supporters of the state demonstrated against the Prime Minister for not moving ahead with one of the numerous hostage release deals that have been floated over the last months.

  1. Inside the Capitol itself, 300 members of Jewish Voices for Peace (not very Jewish and not very peaceful either) outfitted in red shirts reading “Not in Our Name” also protested against Netanyahu as the “perpetrator of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.”

  1. Inside the House Chamber today when Netanyahu mounts the podium, there will be a lot of empty seats. Vice-President Kamala Harris, who would normally sit next to the Speaker of the House, will not attend citing preset schedules for the time of the speech.  In addition, many other legislators including Senators Jerry Nadler (New York), Dick Durbin (Illinois), Bernie Sanders (Vermont), Chris Van Holen (Maryland), Jeff Merkley (Oregon), Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts) and Senator/Vice Presidential candidate J D Vance (Ohio) as well as South Carolina Congressman James Clybourn and a host of others including the members of The Squad will also boycott the event.

  1. To top it off 17 senior officials from Israel sent a formal letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries saying that the Prime Minister should not have been invited as he is “an existential threat to Israel.”  They include, among others, former Mossad Head Tamir Pardo, former IDF Chief of Staff, Dan Halutz, and former Defense Chief Moshe Ya’alon.

Did we need all of this?  Did the Prime Minister need to leave Israel at this critical time with two major initiatives on the table to go to Washington so he can claim he spoke before Congress more than any other country’s leader?  Is that important to us?

Better he should have stayed, finished up the hostage release deal with its attendant stoppage of military activity in Gaza.  He also should have helped move forward the Saudi initiative to normalize relations with us as well.  Sad that he did not make that calculation which, instead, leaves us fighting on multiple fronts with the Houthis threatening to bring their war to the center of Israel as well.

Perhaps in his meeting with Biden on Thursday, the President will get the point across to our Prime Minister, that the real test of leadership is knowing when to step down.

DEMOCRACY DYING ACCORDING TO HANSON.

Democracy Really Is Dying in Darkness—But by Whom? Never in modern presidential history has a political party staged a veritable inside coup to remove their current president from his ongoing candidacy for his party’s nomination and reelection. Stranger still, the very elites and grandees, who now are using every imaginable means of deposing Biden as their nominee, are the very public voices that just weeks ago insisted that candidate Biden was “sharp as a tack” and “fit as a fiddle.” And they damned any who thought otherwise! They are also the identical operators whose machinations ensured that there would not be an open Democratic primary. They demonized the few on the Left who weakly challenged Biden in the primaries. Yet now they will select a replacement candidate who likely never received a single primary vote. Note further: Biden’s impending forced abdication is not because he is non compos mentis. Rather, the inside move is due to Biden’s disastrous debate exposure that confirmed his dementia could no longer be disguised by a conspiracy of leftist politicos and media. But far more importantly, the impetus for removal is driven by the admission that the cognitively Biden is headed for a climactic November defeat. Were Biden now ahead in the polls by five points, these same backroom machinists would be insisting that he was still Pericles. Yet now Biden is being un-personed and Trotskyized, as we prepare the new groupthink narrative of his likely surrogate—a soon to be praised eloquent, mellifluous, and articulate Cicero-Harris. That Biden will likely remain as president until January 20, 2025, should remind the country the Left is more worried about its own next four-year continuance in power than the fate of the country that now admittedly will be guided in the next six months by a president judged unfit by his own supporters to run for the very office that he will still keep holding. Further irony arises when those who, as supposedly guardians of democratic norms, pontificated to the country the last nine years about the Trump-Hitlerian threat to democracy. Yet now they so cavalierly work overtime on how: a) to pull off the removal of their candidate from the November ballot on grounds of senility, b) but not the removal of the same president from office (their own fate is more precious than our collective fate as a nation), c) while trying to select, rather than elect, a replace candidate, d) without ever offering any explanation, much less an apology, how a Democrat president from January 20, 2021, was daily declared vibrant, dynamic, and engaged but suddenly one day after June 27, 2024, was remanufactured as not? Perhaps as an aid and primer on Biden removal they should reread the essay by former Obama Pentagon official Rosa Books. Just 11 days after the Trump inauguration, she published in Foreign Policy, “3 Ways to Get Rid of President Trump Before 2020”. It was a veritable manual on the various ways of removing the just inaugurated president—listing immediate alternatives to the distant 2020 election: impeachment and conviction, 25th-Amendment removal, and, barring all that, a military coup: “The fourth possibility is one that until recently I would have said was unthinkable in the United States of America: a military coup, or at least a refusal by military leaders to obey certain orders.” So, to make sense of what these self-appointed and sanctimonious protectors of democracy are trying to pull off demands an Orwellian vocabulary—memory hole, newspeak, unperson, and groupthink. Yet there is one more irony. Very soon, those who welcomed the protests of summer 2020 radicals, and exempted the rioting and violence, and then again did nothing in 2024 as mobs tore apart campuses and shut down public facilities, will host a Chicago convention—where those very same liberated forces may wreak havoc on the outside, while their backroom progenitors, with threats, money, and the media, will wreak havoc on democracy on the inside.

Pennsylvania Democrats give mixed response to idea of Harris as nominee
By Salena Zito

PITTSBURGH- President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from his re-election race and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement was not met with as much enthusiasm among Pennsylvania Democrats as it was among party leaders in some other parts of the country.

Pennsylvania is arguably the most important swing state in the country. But while gushing endorsements for Harris came from the likes of Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington State, chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Pennsylvania party leaders sang a different tune.

Inside Netanyahu’s trip to DC: Navigating a political minefield

There was absolutely no way to predict that by the time the Israeli premier arrived in Washington, Biden would no longer be the Democratic candidate, or that Republican candidate Donald Trump would have just survived an assassination attempt.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer on May 31 issued a formal invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress. A date for the speech, July 24, was announced just over one week later.

While the United States was clearly in the middle of a contentious election cycle, there was absolutely no way to predict that by the time Netanyahu arrived, President Joe Biden would no longer be the Democratic candidate, or that Republican candidate and Former President Donald Trump would have just survived an assassination attempt.

Scheduling Netanyahu’s trip has been tedious. He was initially scheduled to meet with Biden and Harris on the days preceding the speech to Congress. Due to COVID in Biden’s case and campaign stops in Harris’s, it was unclear whether either would meet Netanyahu.  The Trump team was also waiting to announce a meeting based on whether meetings with Biden and Harris would take place.

As of now, both Biden and Harris are currently on schedule to meet with Netanyahu on Thursday. Trump is now on schedule for Friday in Mar a Lago. And while Israeli press are invited to cover the meetings with Biden and Harris, no press is being invited to the meeting with Trump, in an attempt to ensure the meeting with a former president does not overshadow those with a sitting president and vice president.

Before the meetings were moved from earlier in the week, the prime minister would have had the final word, and the ability to address the results of his meetings from the floor of the Capitol. Now, both Biden and Harris will have the opportunity in their meetings to respond to Netanyahu’s remarks.

Netanyahu arrived with less than typical fanfare. Not only were Biden and Harris unable to greet Netanyahu at the airport, even Secretary of State Antony Blinken, America’s top diplomat, did not prioritize Netanyahu’s welcome. It was a less than subtle snub.

Similarly, Vice President Harris is abdicating one of her primary duties, namely presiding over the Senate at large state events, by choosing a campaign stop over attending Netanyahu’s speech.

Fortunately, a contingent of top Jewish communal leaders, as well as a contingent of pro-Israel Christian faith leaders, both gave Netanyahu warm and constructive welcomes in separate meetings with the prime minister.

Security for Netanyahu’s visit is at an all-time high, due both to the significant protests planned in response to his visit and the heated political climate in which the Secret Service just failed to prevent an assassination attempt on a former president.

American politics has never been in greater chaos. An argument could have been made for Netanyahu to steer clear amid the drama.

According to the narrative woven by most mainstream media, Israel’s war is controversial and Netanyahu is the controversial figure behind the war. Mainstream media has quickly forgotten that the war was declared by Hamas on Oct. 7 with the murder of 1,200 people and kidnapping of more than 250, most of whom were either in their homes or attending a music festival on a Jewish holiday.

Instead, the media focus on casualty figures produced by the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health and on the biased rulings of the International Court of Justice. All while the International Criminal Court threatens to issue arrest warrants charging Israeli leaders with war crimes.

Many of the headlines Netanyahu has received so far on his visit have been predictably negative. Many are focused more on the protesters than on the critical messages the prime minister intends to deliver.

Protesters have amassed in large numbers outside the Watergate Hotel, where Netanyahu is staying. Others barricaded themselves inside the congressional Cannon House Office Building. Some have been protesting outside the White House. Many more are expected outside Congress on Wednesday.

Several Democratic senators and representatives are refusing to attend the speech in protest. Others may attend only to disrupt the proceedings.

Had Netanyahu not arrived, the media would have stayed very busy covering presidential politics gone awry. But when an Israeli head of state gets invited to address a joint session of Congress, it is an invitation that simply cannot be turned down.

Then, less than 24 hours before Netanyahu boarded his newly minted Wings of Zion, the Israeli version of Air Force 1, Biden announced on X that he was bowing out of the presidential race, shortly afterward endorsing Harris. There was zero chance that Netanyahu would cancel the trip on such short notice, without the excuse of some sort of major emergency.

Yet there may be unexpected positives to emerge during Netanyahu’s address. First and foremost, Americans and the entire world for that matter, will get to see a seasoned statesman making the case for his nation, in a reasoned and responsible manner.

Netanyahu has not only the opportunity but the obligation to present Israel’s case to the world amid the political chaos that he is forced to lead his country through.

His speech is likely to answer the calls made to address a “day after” plan for the Gaza Strip. He is also expected to present new ideas for confronting the Iranian threat. Before Oct. 7, Iran only threatened to throw the Middle East into chaos. Now, the threats Netanyahu presciently warned of for years from the floor of the Capitol have become reality.

Netanyahu certainly hopes that his 2024 visit to Washington and speech to Congress will satisfy supporters, counter critics and justify all of the challenges and complexities.

The WHO passed the Amended International Health Regulations on June 1, 2024.   Countries, including the US, have 10 months to opt out.  Biden could short-circuit this opt-out period by adopting the Amendments by means of Executive Order. It is our position that this should not be allowed.  The Amendments are substantial enough to constitute a Treaty, which needs to go through the Senate.
This document was sent to me by the President of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers.  It outlines a proposal that Biden apparently loves, from the World Health Organization.  In it, they propose to have each country (they call them states) open an office to dictate and monitor health practices and compliance within that country.  WHO would decide what is a pandemic, and that could be just about anything.  They could decide that the environment is posing a health risk and ban meat or gas.  They could decide that people should only live in cities for their health.  (15 minute cities — where everything you need is within a 15 minute walk.)  Once they’ve made a determination,  the departments within each country would surveil everyone to be sure they obeyed orders, such as staying inside, wearing a mask, taking the designated shots, eating the right foods, drinking the right things, and not speaking up in disagreement.  It is truly a one-world order run by the WHO.

Please read this and spread the word.  Our local Congressman didn’t know about it.  Biden wants to just sign on without it being approved by the Senate as a treaty.  Write to your senators and pressure them not to let this happen.  (Our senators in GA are probably hopeless, but you may have better ones to deal with.). Feel free to distribute this info far and wide.  People don’t know that this is happening.

Greetings!

The very first enumerated power bestowed upon an American president is the title of Commander in Chief of our military forces. We need to seriously ponder the preeminent duty of an American president because we have not. We have allowed almost imbecilic emotionalism to drive our selection. I encourage all of us to think constitutionally about the preeminent duties of an American president. And who do you want not just answering the phone call but sitting in that room with the most dangerous people in the world?

On a lighter yet equally perilous note, I invite you to read my OPED for Town Hall this week. Let us just say it includes an analogy of the famous Abbott and Costello skit, "Who's on first?"

This week on Live Free TV, I had the distinct pleasure of talking with country music performer, patriot and all-around good guy Ira Dean. Ira and his friends Jason Michael Carroll and a surprise hit-producing country artist (you know him!) will be joining me on September 11 in Charlotte, NC, for a special event and concert benefiting our active and retired servicemember families. If you will be in the area, we would love to see you there.
