I just finished reading: "The Last Kings of Shanghai" by Jonathan Kaufman.
I could not have read it at a more propitious time because it is the story of two great rivals - The Kadoorie and Sassoon families who developed Hong Kong and Shanghai, were Jewish refugees and how they evolved and dealt with China Nationalists and then Communists.
Both families made much of their initial fortune from the Opium Trade and then took the profits into banking, insurance, utilities, real estate development including some of the world's greatest hotels etc. The Kadoorie's came out better in terms of dealing with the Chinese whereas, Victor Sassoon lost billions when the Communists appropriated his real estate and business empire in Hong Kong.
The current relevance relates to Elly Kadoorie's insights into Chinese Culture and Politics which allowed two of his sons to prosper and their ability to continue dealing with China's Communist leaders and the history of Japan's oppression towards the Chinese as well as the Colonialists' of China and the lingering resentment that is a force driving China's current leaders desire to dominate.
America is in it's dissent relative to China which is in a current resurrective ascent, so to speak. The question for me is whether America can do what is needed in order to remain a relevant power while retaining to be a democratic republic or whether it will implode from the pressures and costs of accomplishing this goal in rebuffing China's challenges? It is often wrong to necessarily believe extrapolating current trends are accurate and predictive but it is evident America is seriously divided.
It is one thing to believe divisive politics is the sole issue. I believe, and am constantly reminding memo readers, our problems are deeper, wider and more systemic. The election of Trump reflected the belief that re-electing our traditional leadership and repeating their mistakes had to change.
Were it not for the constant defiance Trump faced and his own reaction to it, he might have been able to right the ship. If judged by 4 years of accomplishments and what he had to overcome he achieved remarkable results.
I have little faith in those who are soon to be in charge, pass muster of meeting the challenges from China and other antagonists.

Purposely being overlooked and will come back to haunt:
I tolerated 44 (Obama) for 8 years and kept quiet. Here is my issue with the whole, “let us all be a United States again” that we heard from Joe Biden. For the last 4+ years, the Democrats have gone "scorched earth." You have salted the fields and now you want to grow crops. The problem is 75 + million of us have memories longer than a hamster.
We remember the women’s march (vagina hats and all) the day after inauguration.
We remember the 4 years of attacks and impeachments
We remember “not our president” and the “Resistance…”
We remember Maxie Walters telling followers to harass us in restaurants.
We remember the President's spokesperson being kicked out of a restaurant.
We remember hundreds of Trump supporters physically attacked.
We remember Trump supporters getting Doxed, and fired from jobs.
We remember riots, and looting.
We remember “a comedian” holding up the President’s severed head.
We remember a play in Central park paid with public funding, showing the killing of President Trump.
We remember Robert de Niro yelling “F" Trump” at the Tony’s and getting a standing ovation.
We remember Nancy Pelosi tearing up the State of the Union Address.
We remember the total in the tank move by the mainstream media.
We remember the non-stop and live fact checking on our President and his supporters.
We remember non-stop in your face lies and open cover-ups from the media.
We remember the President and his staff being spied upon.
We remember five Senators shot on a ball field.
We remember every so-called comedy show turning into a Trump hate fest.
We remember 95% negative coverage in the news.
We remember state governors asking and getting everything they asked for and then blaming Trump for their problems.
We remember a Trump top aid verbally assaulted in two DC restaurants.
We remember people banging on the Supreme Court doors.
We remember that we were called every name in the book for supporting President Trump and Hillary called us "deplorables."
We remember Hollywood said they would leave after Trump was elected but they stayed.
This list is endless, but you get the idea. My friends will be my friends, but a party that has been on the attack for 4 long years does not get a free pass with me.
Don’t call for Unity when your party pushed the opposite agenda for 4 years and continues to do so as I write.

Democrats and 10 renegade Rino's have impeached Trump. I hope they are proud of themselves . No evidence was presented, nothing in his speech was revealed to indicate he encouraged or ordered those assembled to riot because there was accordingly nothing in his speech. The second impeachment was based on a desire to do so shortly after he was inaugurated according to an editorial in WAPO.
What occurred today did nothing to heal and we have Pelosi to thank. Based on Democrats I am a white supremacist, a traitor because I voted for Trump and were I employed my job might be in jeopardy. Were I in college I might not be able to express my views for fear of receiving failing grades by my "learned" professors or even attacked on campus by true "patriots." This is the country I, and many deplorables, now live in and frankly I no longer recognize America.
Democrats want more power. They want their word to become gospel. Their way or the highway. The land of the free and brave is on the way out the door and is being replaced by hypocrisy and hate. I do not have many years more on this earth but I will never vote for a Democrat and frankly I don't have much regard for the Republican party either.
