The U.S. Is Betting Big on Small Nuclear Reactors
Editor OilPrice.com

The U.S. is set to accelerate the rollout of new nuclear power plants and reactors following the passing of new legislation this month. This follows a movement away from nuclear power for several decades due to the poor political and public perception of nuclear power due to several notable nuclear disasters. Now, in line with plans for a green transition, the U.S. is once again turning to nuclear power to provide abundant low-carbon energy and help decarbonize its economy.

This month, the House approved legislation aimed at developing U.S. nuclear power capacity in the coming years, with a vote of 365 to 36. The Atomic Energy Advancement Act was widely approved by both the Democrat and Republican parties as it is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also bolstering the country’s energy security. Unlike other energy sources, there is not an ideological divide on nuclear energy, which has become increasingly popular in recent years.

Despite several notable nuclear disasters in the past, which swayed public opinion out of favor with nuclear power, scientists and researchers have repeatedly reported that it is one of the safest forms of energy production. It is far safer than fossil fuels, which have negative effects on health and the environment. There are also strict regulations in place at the national and international levels to ensure that nuclear plants are held to the highest safety standards. Furthermore, nuclear power is more reliable than many renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, as it can provide 24-hour stable electricity production.

The law will see that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) streamlines its processes for the approval of new reactor designs, and will increase hiring at the commission, reduce fees for applicants, establish financial prizes for novel types of reactors, and encourage the development of nuclear power at the sites of retiring coal plants. The legislation is expected to support the greatest development of U.S. nuclear power of this generation.

At present, nuclear power produces 18 percent of U.S. electricity. However, interest in nuclear power development has slowed in recent decades, with only three new reactors becoming operational since 1996. While nuclear power shows great promise for the future of energy, supporting a green transition, the development of nuclear plants and reactors is extremely expensive. The two new reactors at the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia cost $35 billion to build, which was double the initial estimates.

As traditional nuclear reactors are prohibitively expensive for many companies to develop, several start-ups and energy firms are exploring the potential for small nuclear reactors (SMRs), which could be built at a fraction of the cost. Around a dozen companies are now developing SMR technology. If these reactors are successful in producing energy, they could be replicated to increase the site’s capacity.

The NRC has previously been criticized for failing to approve innovative new reactor designs, with many suggesting it is stuck in the past. SMRs could be key to boosting the U.S. nuclear power capacity, but without support from the NRC, companies across the country are unable to roll out the technology. The new legislation is aimed at making it easier for companies to gain approval to test new reactor technology for use on smaller sites across the U.S. However, those who opposed the passing of the bill are concerned that this will undermine reactor safety.

The development of new nuclear power will be supported by government plans to develop its home-grown enriched uranium industry, to reduce its reliance on Russia. At present, the U.S. continues to depend heavily on Russia for the provision of its High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU). The Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom is still the only company that sells HALEU commercially. However, the U.S. has big plans to create a HALEU production industry, with the Department of Energy establishing the HALEU Consortium to secure a domestic supply of uranium.

The Biden administration has repeatedly demonstrated its support for nuclear power by passing laws and approving funding to keep existing nuclear projects afloat. Two policies, passed in 2021 and 2022, provided the funding needed to save 22 reactors, with further investment being rolled out this year. This financing is expected to keep the existing U.S. nuclear reactor fleet online until at least 2032, by which time the government hopes greater investment will be being made into new nuclear projects. The policies also provide funding for research and development into the next generation of modular, more flexible nuclear plants.

The passing of the Atomic Energy Advancement Act is expected to speed up the deployment of new nuclear energy technology, supported by previous Biden administration policies that provide greater investment to the sector. While strict safety regulations must be upheld, the government is putting pressure on the NRC to modernize and approve innovative reactor designs to allow for new nuclear energy capacity to be rolled out in support of a green transition.

Senator Schumer:  You are No Shomer Israel
By Sherwin Pomerantz

During the 1988 US vice presidential debate pitting Democratic nominee Senator Lloyd Bentsen against Republican Senator and later Vice-President Dan Quayle, Quayle attempted to paint himself in the image of former Senator and then US President John Kennedy.  At one point Bentsen, who knew Kennedy well from the time they were both members of the 80th-82nd Congresses, looked Quayle in the eye and uttered the famous words ”Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."  This, in order to deflate Quayle’s thinking too highly of himself

Hearing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer brag about the fact that his   name, Schumer, comes from the Hebrew Shomer or guardian and that as such he has always seen himself as Shomer Israel or the Guardian of Israel brought Bentsen’s statement to mind.  Based on the speech Schumer delivered last Thursday I would say to him “Senator, you’re no Shomer Israel.”

Truth be told, the surname Schumer does not come from Shomer but was actually an occupational name for a cobbler. The name is derived from the Old German words "schuoch" and the suffix "mann," which means shoe maker.  In the Jewish communities of Europe it was the custom to give people surnames that represented their vocation.   Given Schumer’s remarks last week, perhaps he should give consideration to returning to the cobbler’s bench of his ancestors.

But it was not, of course, just that.  The Senate of the United States is not the Senate of Rome.  In Rome the Senate was, indeed, a place of debate about the times and their challenges, rather than a legislative body per se.  In the case of the United State Senate, that body operates by rules where the debate revolves around legislation and whether it should be passed or not.   Last week there was no legislation on the Senate floor that demanded the majority leader opine as he did on what and who were the obstacles to peace in the Middle East.  Senator Schumer simply took the privilege of rank, as it were, and for 48 minutes excoriated Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu as one of the four major obstacles to peace, and then urged all of us living here to take down our duly elected government. From a parliamentary perspective he should have been ruled out of order by the Senate President as soon as he began his rant as there was no motion of substance on the floor at the time.

While there are plenty of arguments in favor of a new government in Israel, it is both audacious and insulting for the majority leader of the US Senate to say what he did about the democratically elected government of an ally of the United States.  It is never proper to attempt to interfere with the internal governance of an ally.  He was later called on that point by senators from both sides of the aisle.

Schumer also chose to bring up the fact that because he is the highest Jewish elected official in the history of the United States, that somehow or other this gives him agency to make the kinds of remarks he did last week.  The plain fact is that au contraire, reality is just the opposite.  Given his position of which we had all been most proud, his obligation is actually not to play on his faith so as not to be seen as acting as a Jew rather than as an American.

We, the members of the worldwide Jewish community, do not need self-appointed guardians of Israel to arrogate unto themselves the right to dictate what kind of a government we should have, how we should conduct our response to the massacre of October 7th or when we should have elections.

Everyone also wondered whether Schumer was speaking in the name of President Biden.  After all, people in public office know that they give up their right to private opinions as anything they say or do will be assumed to reflect the policy of the organization or government they represent.  Initially the White House said they were aware that Schumer was going to do this but were not involved in the preparation of the speech itself.  It would have been nice to be able to believe that.

So it was, of course, further disappointing to hear President Biden, without whose commitment and largesse we would have had to stop our military activity against Hamas months ago, remark that he thought Schumer’s speech was a good one thereby giving it his imprimatur as well.  Not exactly in line with his bona fides of being a Christian Zionist.

To be sure everyone believes that elected officials of any country have to make decisions which they believe are in the best interests of their government.  In the case of the US-Israel relationship, not everything that is good for the US will necessarily be good for Israel as well and we accept that.  We also do not expect elected officials in the US who are Jewish to always agree with what we are doing here.   However, the Jewish community has no need for someone to rise to such a lofty position and then use that position to dictate what we should be doing here.  For that, the senator should be ashamed.

Come Yom Kippur, if he wants to know who he should contact to ask forgiveness before the onset of the holiday, he can start with the 7.2 million of us here who are the real guardians of Israel.  We will be waiting for his call.

MEF Report: U.S. Intel Failures on Iran Proxies Underscore Need for Regime Change
News from the Middle East Forum

https://www.meforum.org/65696/mef-report-us-intel-failures-on-iran-proxies

PHILADELPHIA – March 20, 2024 – Iran and its proxies are rampaging: an attack on Pakistan, the Oct. 7 Hamas invasion of Israel, Hezbollah attacks on Israel, Houthi strikes on maritime trade in the Red Sea, the killing of American soldiers, and more.

Yet, the U.S. government fails to see the problem. According to Politico,

Intelligence officials have calculated that Tehran does not have full control over its proxy groups in the Middle East, including those responsible for attacking and killing U.S. troops in recent weeks, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

This dangerous misconception allows Iran to increase its malign activities almost without cost.

A new report from the Middle East Forum, "A World without the Islamic Republic of Iran," exposes Iran's proxy network and Tehran's direct command and control over it. The report argues that this threat can be eliminated in only one way: by ending the Khomeinist regime.

No concessions or negotiations will deter that regime from regional domination. Instead, the U.S. government must support the aspirations of the Iranian people for a free and democratic government, one that respects human rights and seeks peace with its neighbors.

Report co-author Jim Hanson explains: "The U.S. intelligence community's failure to recognize the severity of Iran's proxy threat brought us to this dismal state of affairs, as symbolized by the Houthis' continued interference in global trade. The time has come, for the first time in 45 years, for the White House to make the overthrow of the Islamic Republic its goal."

MEF director Gregg Roman adds, "The Middle East Forum is committed to exposing the true nature of the Islamic Republic and working towards a future where the Iranian people can live in freedom and dignity."

Shutting Down the DEI Racket
The revelation this month that the University of Virginia has been spending $20 million a year on 235 employees who focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion was astonishing.
By Newt Gingrich

Thanks to a new report by the government watchdog group Open the Books, we now know that some DEI executives at the university are raking in more than $500,000 a year, including benefits.

For example, the senior associate dean of the business school is also the global chief diversity officer. He is paid $587,340 including benefits. The vice president of DEI and community partnerships takes home an estimated $520,000 in salary and benefits. There is a whole slate of DEI executives – vice presidents, associate deans, directors, assistant directors, managers, etc. – who earn up to $400,000 in salary and benefits.

Open the Books Founder and CEO Adam Andrzejewski told me this week on Newt’s World that it takes tuition from 1,000 UVA students just to cover the base salaries of UVA’s army of DEI-focused employees.

Keep in mind, the median household income in Virginia is roughly $87,000 a year, according to the latest U.S. Census data. In Loudoun County, the state’s wealthiest area, the median household income is $147,111. So, DEI executives at a state-run school are making nearly six times more than the median income households in the state – and nearly three-and-a-half times more than median income households in the wealthiest county.

And UVA is not alone. In January, the New York Post reported the University of Michigan is paying more than $30 million to 241 DEI-focused employees. State legislatures across the country are now scrambling to curb DEI spending in their states, particularly in higher education. But the truth is, the DEI racket has gone global. Worldwide, the DEI industry is soaking up roughly $9.3 billion, according to Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

The terrible irony for Virginia is this DEI scheme is fleecing a university founded by Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and famously penned the principle that “all men are created equal.” Since our founding – and through generations of intense civil discourse and serious effort – America has worked toward creating a society in which every American has equal opportunity and can succeed through hard work and determination.

To be clear: Diversity is good. America has been successful largely because it is a melting pot of people and cultures. I am also for making sure people are included and participate in our civil society.

However, I – and many other Americans – have serious concerns about the concept of placing equity over equality. Equity means guaranteeing people equal outcomes. DEI’s disciples will tell you equity is merely an effort to correct past discrimination and persecution. However, in practice, equity means treating people differently – or granting special accommodations – based on their ethnicity, sex, or other intrinsic traits. This flies in the face of everything we learned from the Civil Rights Movement and is the antithesis of the basic concept of equality.

Virginia Gov. Glen Youngkin has begun to investigate DEI programs at some of the largest colleges in the state. His administration is seeking to review curriculum at George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University. As the administration told the publication Higher Ed:

“The administration has heard concerns from members of the Board of Visitors, parents, and students across the Commonwealth regarding core curriculum mandates that are a thinly veiled attempt to incorporate the progressive left’s groupthink on Virginia’s students… Virginia’s public institutions should be teaching our students how to think, not what to think and not advancing ideological conformity.”

In a separate statement, Youngkin’s press secretary, Macaulay Porter, told reporters the governor, “will continue to advance equal opportunities — not equal outcomes — for all Virginians.”

At America’s New Majority Project, we have learned that 88 percent of Americans believe universities should focus on teaching students how to think and succeed in the workforce – not to become social activists.

Gov. Youngkin and other state leaders are right. The DEI industry is a racket that must be shutdown.

Review of Seamus Bruner's "Controligrarchs" 6th Chapter entitled: "The Open Society Scheme."

The 6th Chapter is solely about one man, George Soros.  This man, in my opinion,  is the most dangerous of men on earth who does not control a nuclear weapon.  His weapons number 3:

a) Dangerous and evil policies.
b) An ability to destroy the currency of nations through market manipulations which  delivered to/imposed poverty on others.
c) His enormous wealth, what he does with it. while above ground and how he will be able to rule from the grave. through his NGO foundations which are run by his son.

Soros is a very bright man and realized he could change law enforcement in large cities at a modest cost by funding district and state attorney campaigns.

Prior to his involvement, these campaigns did not draw a lot of attention nor require significant funding. Consequently, for a modest sum, Soros was able to elect candidates who chose not to be active in law enforcement and consequently crime and unlawful disruptive activities spread tuning major cities and abutting urban areas into battlegrounds. Philadelphia, the former "City of Brotherly Love"
has become a war zone.

It takes many years to construct lovely homes, build parks, commercial and safe shopping areas.  It takes a few weapons and gang confrontations to turn them into places akin to hell.

Soros is not your typical billionaire "Controligarch" as the author, Seamus Bruner, discusses. Soros does not deal in drugs or like the Rockefeller's and Bill Gates JR tell people what foods they can eat.

Rather, Soros seeks to change hearts. He engages in "political philanthropy." In doing so, he gains positive press, adds billions to his billions and is able to easily fund his social justice initiatives.

His mision is predominantly influencing social attitudes regarding birth and gun control, criminal justice, drug legalization, the nuclear family and parental involvement in childhood education.  He seeks what he calls an "open society" and will spend any amount to open those he perceives are "closed."  The author call Soros the "man behind the curtain." To accomplish his goals he partners with various organizations like the World Bank, The U.N., WHO and with named foundations of like intent AKA The Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie and Gates.

Soros uses his billions to exert political leverage and his checkered past history has taken many twists and turns. He believes by training the way youths think and financing their behaviour he will/can permanently influence society.  Though Soros is no Communist, the author writes Soros embraces Vladimir Lenin's spoken philosophy: " Give me just one generation of youth and I'll transform the whole world."

Higher education has been a serious emphasis and recipient of his Open Society Foundation's largess and most of a $400 million commitment has gone to his Central European University and America's Bard College.

Soros' concentrated charitable focus and dollars have become an overwhelming influence in reshaping our own nation. If allowed to continue unrestrained, I daresay we will not recognize America in another 20 or so years.
