Jewish org calls on Biden to condemn Farrakhan’s antisemitic remarks

(A7)The Abraham Global Peace Initiative (AGPI) called on US President Joe Biden to condemn Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s recent antisemitic remarks made during the organization’s “Saviours Day” event in Chicago on February 26.

On Thursday, the Toronto-based AGPI expressed “shock and Ismay” over the latest antisemitic tirade uttered by the 89-year old Nation of Islam leader that contained numerous hateful references to Jews.

“AGPI expressed revulsion at the latest Farrakhan Speech… [that] apparently referred to age-old antisemitic stereotypes including the notions of ‘Jewish power,’ the Rothschild family and control of the media. In one segment, Farrakhan apparently said, ‘Years ago, you could not find Jews in the media because they did not want us to know the tremendous control they had.’”

The advocacy organization noted that the full video of Farrakhan’s hateful remarks is still available on the Nation of Islam’s website.

The address included accusations that Jews control world governments, the media and financial institutions. Farrakhan also again referred to the Jewish community as the “Synagogue of Satan.”

He further repeated his claim that Jews control Black celebrities, defending Kanye West and Kyrie Irving. He praised West as “a very great brother, a genius.”

“As an organization that advocates religious freedom and strives to build on the Abrahamic tradition of unity, respect and tolerance, we are completely shocked by the antisemitic references made on ‘Saviours Day.’ Given the rising tide of antisemitism as described in our latest global report, we are calling on US President Joe Biden to condemn Farrakhan’s apparent remarks,” said AGPI CEO Avi Benlolo said.

“This is exactly why building on interfaith work such as our meeting last week with Pope Francis and previously with religious leaders in the UAE and Morocco is critical now more than ever,” Benlolo added.

Farrakhan’s speech, “The War of Armageddon Has Begun,” was also denounced by the Simon Wiesenthal Center for unleashing a “tsunami of Jew hatred.”

“The Simon Wiesenthal Center is condemning Louis Farrakhan’s latest Savior’s Day antisemitic and anti-Judaic diatribes during the Nation of Islam’s annual conference in Chicago,” SWC said in a statement.

In February, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), upon learning of Ticketmaster’s involvement with the Nation of Islam event, penned a letter to the company’s CEO Michael Rapino expressing its outrage, including in the document examples of Farrakhan’s antisemitic statements at past Saviors’ Days.

Victim of Tel Aviv shooting dies of wounds 11 days after terror attack
He ‘showered nothing but goodness, love and giving on everyone who crossed his path,’ says mother of 32-year-old Or Eshkar, after he succumbed to his injuries

A man seriously wounded in a terrorist shooting attack in Tel Aviv earlier this month has succumbed to his wounds.

Or Eshkar, 32, died on Monday, 11 days after he was shot by a gunman who opened fire outside a cafe on the corner of Dizengoff and Ben Gurion streets. Two other Israelis were less seriously wounded in the attack.

Roni Gamzu, director of Ichilov Hospital, said that “unfortunately, the severity of his wounds was deadly. After a heroic struggle of many days, in which we saw an iron man fight for his life, we were forced to declare his death.”

Natalie Eshkar, Or’s mother, said that “our light of uncommon quality went out today,” a reference to Or’s name, which translates to “light.”

Eshkar “showered nothing but goodness, love and giving on everyone who crossed his path,” his mother said in a statement shared by the hospital. She thanked medical staff, family, friends and “all the people of Israel who were with us, who strengthened us, supported us and prayed.”

The hospital said that Eshkar’s family has decided to donate his organs.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “we hoped and prayed” for Eshkar to recover, but “our hearts are broken.” Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote that “iron man Or fought until the last moment,” sending condolences to his family and friends.

President Isaac Herzog said his “heart broke” to hear the news, just a few days after he spoke with “his brave mother, and prayed for his recovery together with all of the people of Israel.”

A statement from the family said that Eshkar’s funeral would be held with only family and friends in attendance, and requested that the media respect their privacy.

Eshkar, 32, was critically hurt in the terror attack on while on his way to a wedding with his friends Rotem Mansano, 34, and Michael Osdon, 36, who were also hurt. Osdon was released from hospital not long after the shooting, while Mansano remains hospitalized but his condition is steadily improving.

The attacker, Mutaz Salah al-Khawaja, fled the scene before being gunned down not long after in a shootout with police officers and civilians.

Osdon told reporters that the three friends were traveling together when they were attacked.

“The terrorist fired, but I was able to move my head and evade the bullet, which hit my cheek. The terrorist fired another bullet at one friend, then the other. He tried to shoot me again, and then I ran to an ice cream store nearby to call rescue services,” he told Channel 13 news not longer after the shooting.

“I was wounded relatively lightly. I am waiting for some cosmetic procedures. Please pray for my friends,” he added.

Netanyahu speaks to Biden: Israel was and will be a strong and vibrant democracy
Four months after their previous conversation, Netanyahu and Biden speak about Iranian issue and the judicial reform. White House: Biden offered support for efforts to forge a compromise on the proposed reforms.
BY Elad Benari

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Sunday evening with US President Joe Biden and updated him on the terrorist attack that took place earlier in the day in Huwara, in which an Israeli citizen was wounded.

The Prime Minister told President Biden that Israel would continue to take action everywhere against terrorists and the architects of terrorism.

The conversation focused on the Iranian threat and expanding the circle of peace.

Regarding the judicial reform, Prime Minister Netanyahu told President Biden that Israel was, and will remain, a strong and vibrant democracy.

Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked President Biden for his commitment to Israel's security.

The White House, in a readout of the conversation, said that Biden “welcomed the March 19 meeting in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, between senior political and security officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Jordan, and the United States with an aim to reduce tensions.”

“The President reinforced the need for all sides to take urgent, collaborative steps to enhance security coordination, condemn all acts of terrorism, and maintain the viability of a two-state solution,” the White House statement added.

“The President also underscored his belief that democratic values have always been, and must remain, a hallmark of the US-Israel relationship, that democratic societies are strengthened by genuine checks and balances, and that fundamental changes should be pursued with the broadest possible base of popular support.”

On the judicial reform, the White House statement said that President Biden “offered support for efforts underway to forge a compromise on proposed judicial reforms consistent with those core principles.”

“The two leaders also discussed tensions and violence in the West Bank. Finally, President Biden reiterated his unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and the ongoing cooperation between our national security teams, including to counter all threats posed by Iran. Both leaders agreed to stay in regular contact over the coming weeks,” the statement concluded.

Biden recently weighed in on the judicial reforms being promoted in Israel, telling Thomas Friedman of The New York Times, “The genius of American democracy and Israeli democracy is that they are both built on strong institutions, on checks and balances, on an independent judiciary.”

“Building consensus for fundamental changes is really important to ensure that the people buy into them so they can be sustained,” the President added.

Vice President Kamala Harris later commented on the judicial reform as well, telling Politico, “As the president has said, an independent judiciary is foundational for a democracy. And I think that there is no question that we need to make sure that that is supported in terms of what we talk about [and] in terms of our values.”

US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides, meanwhile, recently called on Israeli leaders to “pump the brakes” on the judicial reform.

On the Republican side, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Axios in an interview that the Israeli government’s judicial reform is an internal Israeli matter and the US should not intervene.

Another reason why we are divided:

Poll: Half of U.S. Population Believes National Media 'Intend to Mislead, Misinform'
By Ben Bartee

Poll: Half of U.S. Population Believes National Media 'Intend to Mislead, Misinform'Townhall Media

Gallup conducted a survey of Americans on their level of confidence in the benevolence and trustworthiness of American media.

The big takeaways from the study are that 23% of respondents “believe most national news organizations care about the best interests of their readers, viewers, and listeners.” A full 50% “feel most national news organizations intend to mislead, misinform, or persuade the public.”

Frankly, it’s amazing that, at this late date, given the endless parade of brazen lies on Russia’s non-existent meddling in the 2016 and 2020 elections, the debunked “safe and effective” mantra vis-à-vis COVID-19 shots, and a thousand other examples of duplicity — that apparently 50% of the country still puts any stock into the corporate media.

(Unfortunately, this study did not delineate between corporate media and independent media, which is a shame. I suspect the trust differential would be enormous.)

Gallup

Breaking down the results along partisan lines, Gallup reports:

Media trust continues to vary along predictable lines. Democrats express significantly more trust in news organizations than Republicans. Among Republicans, trust in news continues to decline. New data show that more independents today report distrusting news than ever previously reported. Yet, trust in local news organizations remains higher than trust in national news.

The polling incorporated a novel element that may have been polled elsewhere but is not commonly included in any analysis of the public’s trust in media: emotional trust.

Emotional trust is more deeply rooted and is especially important to understand in the context of the news media. This study shows that emotional trust has a strong relationship to perceptions and behaviors that could harm the critical, mutually beneficial relationship between the health of the press and the health of U.S. democracy. The more emotional trust Americans have in news, the more likely they are to say news organizations balance staying in business and serving the public well.

What this suggests is that the average viewer or reader might not consume news and then make a judgment based solely on the facts presented (most don’t have a strong grasp on the facts; that would require hours of research). Instead, they make judgments based on whether they feel the source is being honest in its presentation of the subject, based purely on a subjective analysis.

People have a remarkable capacity to sniff out lies. “They can smell [the truth],” to quote Tucker Carlson.

Emotional judgments are often the only tool that we have, as we are forced out of practicality to rely on the analysis of the person or group presenting the news in terms of the fact. Most issues are incredibly complex and would take much too much time to fully analyze on own’s own — time most of us don’t have. The challenge is doubly difficult if the sources are confidential or anonymous — then the factor of trust in the journalist and the outlet becomes even more relevant.
