Jewish Neighborhood in Brooklyn Dealing With a Surge in Hate Crime Attacks

For years the Jewish people in NYC have largely kept to their neighborhoods. They buy up blocks of property and have their own little communities. While they try to keep it predominantly Jewish, they have never prevented other races from moving in or renting from them. Now, this mixing is causing hatred for their people on the streets.

In Williamsburg, there have been three separate incidents over mid-August. In these attacks, the victims have been slapped, punched, and sprayed with the powder of a fire extinguisher. Given the dress of all three victims, it is easy to identify their Jewish heritage.

According to the NYPD, the latest victim was a 27-year-old man. He was simply wearing “traditional Jewish attire” while walking on a sidewalk. While on his walk he was “approached by an unknown male, who, unprovoked and without words exchanged, slapped the victim on the left side of the face.” The perpetrator then fled the scene. In this case, the NYPD identified him as a “male, dark complexion, 30’s, 5’10” tall, with a medium build.” According to surveillance, he was last seen wearing a “yellow shirt, black pants, black boots, [and] a black hat.”

Just the day before a 72-year-old man “was approached by a group of unidentified individuals, [before] one sprayed him with a powder from a fire extinguisher.” Much like the most recent case, this was an unprovoked attack. Roughly the same time a 66-year-old man suffered an identical attack, also with a group of individuals just a few blocks away.

So far there have been no arrests and the NYPD Hate Crime task force is chasing down any and all leads.

These kinds of attacks are incredibly reminiscent of previous attacks on other groups here in the US and abroad. It would seem like this group is trying to intimidate the established and elderly Jewish people of the neighborhood to try and chase them out. The idea is that if they all leave of their own choosing, this group could take over.

Now that’s not necessarily what the idea is, but so far these hate crimes are right on target for that kind of reasoning. Given the response the Jewish people have gotten from similar descriptions of people over the years in NYC, it would certainly seem like the ghettos they had after WWII are being taken over yet again.

The American people have no tolerance for this kind of hatred and these attacks. Especially for the elderly. In NYC attacks like this are prosecuted specifically to make examples out of the people committing the crimes. However, they typically are only assigning these hate charges to white men against any other skin color. So this kind of investigation is well outside their wheelhouse, and well outside their scope of expertise.

Yet, they took an oath. An oath to protect the people of NYC and that they would make people face the blind scales of justice. They ensure the people who were made victims can see justice is served for how they were wronged. In this instance, they certainly have their work cut out from them, as the BLM movement has been against anyone receiving a gate crime charge if they have a “dark complexion” as the NYPD classified this assailant. Should they use that charge they will likely become targeted for more “peaceful protests.”

FINALLY A DESERVED JUDICIAL RULING.

+++

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Monday granted a request by former President Donald Trump’s legal team to appoint a special master to review documents seized by the FBI during a search of his Florida home last month.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon came despite the objections of the Justice Department, which said an outside legal expert was not necessary in part because officials had already completed their review of potentially privileged documents. The judge had previously signaled her inclination to approve a special master, asking a department lawyer during arguments this month, “What is the harm?”

The appointment may slow the pace of the department’s investigation into the presence of top-secret information at Mar-a-Lago, but it is unlikely to affect any investigative decisions or the ultimate outcome of the probe.

FETTERMAN RUNNING A KILLING CAMPAIGN.

+++

Radical Democrat John Fetterman’s Campaign Employs Convicted Murderers

BY Nick Gilbertson

Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman employs two convicted murderers on his U.S. Senate campaign. They were both granted commuted sentences thanks in part to the state’s Board of Pardons, which Fetterman oversees.

Dennis and Lee Horton were convicted of second-degree murder stemming from a 1993 fatal shooting during a robbery in Philadelphia and sentenced to life in prison. The brothers are listed on the Fetterman for PA Committee payroll, according to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and have received salary payments totaling in the tens of thousands of dollars each.

The campaign of his Republican opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) are calling on the Democrat candidate to fire the brothers.

“If John Fetterman cared about Pennsylvania’s crime problem, he’d prove it by firing the convicted murderers he employs on his campaign,” said Brittany Yanick, communications director of the Oz Campaign, in a statement.

“John Fetterman has a long record of being soft on crime, which he constantly tries to hide from voters and the press,” said NRSC spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow in a statement, adding:

He wants to release one-third of inmates onto Pennsylvania’s streets and now has two convicted murderers working on his campaign. He needs to start putting Pennsylvania communities ahead of murderers and other criminals and can start by firing the two convicted murderers he’s employed.

A 2021 court filing in the Superior Court of Pennsylvania cited the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County summary of “the facts underlying [Dennis] Horton’s convictions.” It reads as follows:

The evidence adduced at trial established that on May 31, 1993, Horton, his brother Lee Horton (“Lee”), and a co-conspirator Robert Leaf (“Leaf”) robbed Filito’s Bar located at 5th Street and Hunting Park Avenue. During the course of the robbery, [Horton], who was carrying a rifle, shot Samuel Alemo multiple times. Alemo later died from his gunshot wounds. [Horton] also shot Luz Archella and her daughter Luz Martinez, injuring both. Leaf brandished what appeared to be a black pistol while Lee took money from bar patrons. After leaving the bar, the three men fled in a blue automobile. A passerby was able to supply police with a description of the vehicle and a partial license plate number. A radio call was sent out, which included a description of the three assailants, their vehicle, and the last four digits of the license plate. A police officer observed the vehicle a short time later only a mile from the crime scene and placed [Horton] and his companions under arrest. Police recovered a .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle from the backseat of the car as well as a black pellet gun under the front passenger seat. Ballistics testing identified the rifle as the same weapon used during the robbery at Filito’s. [Horton], Lee, and Leaf, who was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt at the time of his arrest, were taken to the hospital where Martinez and her daughter, as well as another bar patron Miguel DeJesus, identified them as the robbers.

The brothers rejected plea deals that would have freed them years ago and maintained their innocence throughout their prison terms, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported in September 2020. They asserted that they picked up Leaf moments before police initiated the traffic stop. He was found in the backseat where the .22 caliber was.

As lieutenant governor, Fetterman chairs the five-person Board of Pardons in Pennsylvania, which saw commutation recommendations to Gov. Tom Wolf (D) skyrocket under his leadership. As the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Julia Terruso first reported in May, the board has suggested 46 commutations under Fetterman’s chairmanship.

“That’s compared with just six in Wolf’s first term, none under former Republican Gov. Tom Corbett’s one term, and only five during former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell’s eight years in office,” Terruso wrote.

In December 2020, by a 4-0 vote, the board recommended commutations for the Horton brothers, which Wolf signed. The following February, Wolf announced that the duo, along with eleven other convicted murderers facing life sentences, were granted commutations.

“Each of these Pennsylvanians is fully deserving of the chance to return to their families and start a new life,” said Fetterman in the release. Two months later, the Hortons began receiving regular salary payments from the Fetterman for PA Committee, federal records show.

The Hortons’ sentences were commuted despite pleas from Alamo’s brother Reinaldo.

“They took a human life, and they don’t deserve to be out in society,” he said, according to the Inquirer’s 2020 article.

Arabs to Biden: Do Not Sign the Iran Deal, It Will Start a War

by Khaled Abu Toameh

The Arabs appear convinced that that pouring billions of dollars on Iran's mullahs will eventually bring terrorism and violence to the US and the other Western powers involved in the new nuclear deal, if not a major war. Pictured: Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani (left), leaves after talks at the Coburg Palais in Vienna on August 4, 2022. (Photo by Alex Halada/AFP via Getty Images)

The talk about an imminent revival of the nuclear deal between Iran and the Biden administration and other Western countries has raised serious concerns among many Arabs. They state that they are especially worried about the billions of dollars that Iran's mullahs will receive once the deal is done. The Arabs say they have no doubt that the money would be used by the mullahs to promote more terrorism and violence and expand Tehran's terrorist proxies in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, the Houthis, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and various militias in Iraq.

"The Arabs will be shocked when the details of the new nuclear deal are published," wrote Sayed Zahra, deputy editor of Bahrain's Akhbar Al-Khaleej.

He noted that before the state of shock engulfs the Arabs, they need to take in mind a number of facts that are related to the impending nuclear deal.

"First, the agreement was made primarily at the insistence of the Biden administration, which has been desperate to reach it," Zahra wrote.

"The Biden administration thinks that it is in dire need of the agreement today to present it as one of its great accomplishments. Second, it was the US, not Iran, that initiated the concessions to facilitate reaching the agreement. A few days ago, US officials announced that it was Iran, not America, that had given up core demands. They lie. Iran has not given up on anything essential. On the contrary, Iran has obtained the essential demands it wants. Third, the most dangerous concession made by the US was to waive the inclusion of Iran's expansionist terrorist role in the region, its threats to the security and stability of Arab countries, the terrorist subversive role that Iran's proxy militias play in the Arab countries, and the issue of the Iranian missile program. Fourth, the agreement will provide huge financial resources to the Iranian regime as a result of the lifting of sanctions and the rush of Western countries to deal with it."

Zahra said that the Arabs also need to take into consideration that, with a green light from the Biden administration, the agreement would give a very big impetus for the Iranian regime to escalate its terrorist aggression against the Arab countries and to redouble its funding to the militias affiliated with it to advance its agenda of undermining the security and stability of these countries.

He also warned that the agreement would mark the beginning of a new era of complete American disregard for the interests of the Arab countries.

"These are the basic facts that we must be aware of before we are shocked," Zahra added. "Based on these facts, the Arab countries are supposed to decide what they will do and how they will deal with the coming danger."

Earlier, echoing the sentiments of many other Arab political analysts and columnists, he wrote that Biden has decided "to bow" to Iran.

"Why did he do this even though he is fully aware of Arab fears and demands, which he heard directly, firmly and clearly during his recent visit to Saudi Arabia from all Arab leaders?"

"It is understood that Biden wants to get the nuclear deal signed in light of his and his administration's declining popularity and the upcoming mid-term elections to Congress that the Democrats fear losing. In other words, he wants to present the new nuclear deal as a diplomatic victory achieved by his administration."

Zahra pointed out that Biden was basically following in the footsteps of former President Barack Obama, who struck the 2015 deal with the mullahs.

"The truth is that this is an American strategic choice, and it was not born today,' Zahra argued. "Rather, it was decided years ago, specifically since former US President Obama was in power. Biden is following his path and is fully convinced of this option. Obama is the one who decided that America's strategic interest is to be in collusion with Iran and in total disregard of the Arabs' fears and demands. He [Obama] did not hide his hatred of Arabs and his admiration for Iran. What Biden is doing today is following the same path, with full conviction on his part."

Syrian author Ibrahim Allush commented on the news about an imminent deal by expressing fear that his country would pay a heavy price.

Allush pointed out that the Syrians have been hit harder by the Iranians than anyone else. Referring to the presence of Iranian security officials and Iranian-backed militiamen in his country, Allush wrote:

"The Syrians are today hungry and displaced. Syria has been taken hostage by a regime that is affiliated with the Iranians and Russians. The Iranians and their allies are spreading the illusion of liberation and resistance, while in fact they spread terrorism. The Iranian regime, with its practices, does not differ from the Taliban regime or from Islamic State (ISIS). Terrorism, destabilization, and domination of people are almost the only goals of such regimes."

Allush warned that a return to the nuclear deal would mean "refinancing the mullahs' regime and its militias with billions of dollars annually."

"The signing of the Iranian nuclear agreement may be a partial solution to the oil and gas crises caused by Russian President Vladimir Putin's war against the Ukrainian people. But it will not be a solution that brings peace to Syria. Iran, which incites terrorism in the region, will be happy with the return of its generous funding, and we Syrians will suffer. We oppose this agreement, despite all our difficult circumstances, because it will bring more money to the Assad regime and its intelligence system, as well as to the Iranian militias that participate with it in committing crimes against the Syrians."

Lebanese journalist Abdul Wahab Badrakhan suggested that instead of paying attention to the mullahs' policies and actions in the region, the Biden administration chose to appease Iran so that it could bargain with it on the nuclear issue.

"America aspired to some partnership with Tehran in confronting China, knowing that it would not happen... It bet on Tehran's 'neutrality' in the Ukraine war, only to be surprised by the drone deals with Russia. The US ignored the concerns of the Gulf states and other Arab countries. Washington has been very late in holding Iran accountable, or at least trying to hold it accountable for the systematic sabotage that it has practiced and is practicing in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Gaza. This is the largest international sabotage operation that the Security Council has not been able to consider. None of the Security Council resolutions related to the region's crises mentions Iran, even though its role is essential in tampering with the four countries and destroying their institutions."

Saudi political analyst Abdullah Bin Bijad Al-Otaibi wrote that the fears of the Arab countries regarding the nuclear agreement are completely valid.

These fears, Al-Otaibi noted, are not limited to Iran's nuclear weapon, but also to interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries and the spread of fundamentalist and terrorist militias and organizations. The Arabs also worried about the mullahs' efforts to export their terrorism to other countries.

"Once the bad nuclear agreement is signed, Iran will get billions of dollars and the region will witness renewed chaos, instability and terrorism... The Iranian threat will not only be directed towards the countries of the region, but will move to all countries of the world, including Western ones. Many peoples will suffer the consequences of this. Including the Western peoples, without a doubt."

Egyptian author Emil Amin also expressed concern that the mullahs would use the billions of dollars they are about to receive under the new deal to support their terrorist militias and proxies. "Iran will not give up its dream of acquiring nuclear weapons," Amin wrote.

"It has come a long way and is close to the finish line. President Biden's administration is trying to create an image in the eyes of the Americans that Iran's return to the nuclear agreement will bring it under control. Washington appears to be in a weak and precarious position, especially in light of the absence of an armed option. In any event, Iranian intentions remain unchanged with or without an agreement, and the countries of the region must evaluate the situation in a way that suits their combined national security capabilities."

Saudi commentator Mashar Al-Thaydi wrote that the Gulf states and other Arab countries, including Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen, are directly concerned about the future once a deal is reached with Iran. Noting that the mullahs have long been playing a "negative role" in the internal affairs of these Arab countries, Al-Thaydi asked:

"For how long will we be watching this absurd play between the West and Iran, while we, Iran's neighbors, are concerned with what will happen with this [Iranian] regime? Obama gave this regime money and legitimacy in exchange for so-called guarantees to slow down, but not prevent, the non-peaceful nuclear program. Today, Biden, and more correctly, the former Obama team, are trying to reassure those who are supposed to be Washington's allies in the region. But if these billions flow into the coffers of the Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Quds Force, how will Washington guarantee the security of these countries?"

Lebanese columnist Rafik Khoury warned that the Biden administration is "repeating non-stop self-deception" as the mullahs themselves continue to practice deception.

"The administration of President Joe Biden is repeating the failed experiment that was also already tested by the administration of Barack Obama... It is acting on the basis that returning to the nuclear agreement achieves three goals: [supposedly] to prevent Iran from becoming a military nuclear power, to transform the [Iranian] regime to moderation by engaging with it, and the perception that the improvement of the economic situation in Iran strengthens the reformists."

According to Khoury, as long as the return to the agreement is confined to the nuclear file and nothing else, "the scenario as drawn by the mullahs and their agents in the region is worrying.... Tehran gets everything it wants, and completes everything it does."

"There will be no restriction on Iran's ballistic missile program, no limit to Iranian influence in the region, no halt to its destabilizing behavior, no exit from Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, and no retreat from arming the Houthis in Yemen and providing them with more missiles and drones that are being launched at civilian targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Will Washington abandon the vital American interests as well as the interests of its allies and friends? The difficult test for America and its commitments to its allies and friends in the Middle East begins immediately after the signing of the nuclear agreement. The Arab countries, whose confidence in the Americans has declined, will face another test: confronting Iranian expansion, regardless of what America does."

The closer that the Biden administration moves towards the mullahs in Tehran, the more the US loses credibility in the Arab world. The Arabs seem to have lost confidence in the Biden administration, which is why they are now talking about the need to take matters into their own hands and try to stop Iran from endangering their security and stability. The Arabs also appear convinced that that pouring billions of dollars on the mullahs will eventually bring terrorism and violence to the US and the other Western powers involved in the new deal, if not a major war.

ARE THERE ENOUGH RATIONAL DEMOCRATS IN NEW YORK TO ELECT ZELDIN?

+++

Why New Era Democrats endorses Lee Zeldin — and much-needed change — for governor

BY John Orlando

The political group New Era Democrats is endorsing Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin. The political group New Era Democrats is endorsing New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin. Gregory P. Mango

You might be surprised to hear this from the president of a Democratic organization, but it’s true: At this moment, we need Rep. Lee Zeldin, Republican candidate for governor.

New Era Democrats was founded after the 1982 gubernatorial race, when we supported Democratic candidate Mario Cuomo. At that moment, our founders believed New York needed to engage new voters and reinvigorate the electorate by supporting someone outside the party machine.

NED has evolved over the years into an independent political association, still believing in “democratic principles.” We welcome voters from all parties tired of divisive politics and political-party machinery. In 2013, we endorsed Bill de Blasio for mayor, a friend and someone we had hoped would bring communities together.

NED several years ago started to see the shift in the Democratic Party philosophy, alienating many lifelong Democratic voters. In 2021, we endorsed Andrew Yang in the mayoral primary. At that moment, we felt the city needed an independent thinker to help us recover from the pandemic. Crime and public safety became the primary issue, and Andrew lost. After the election, the Big Tent Party became a little smaller when he departed.

Why Lee Zeldin, why now? Rising crime continues to be an issue for New Yorkers. The Democratic mayor of New York’s largest locality has repeatedly asked the governor and Legislature to reform the bail laws. Just this week, the NYPD commissioner penned an op-ed detailing the crime numbers and writing that criminals “are exploiting the reforms intended to help the majority of low-level, first-time offenders.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul failed to address the state's disastrous bail reform and rising crime.Gov. Kathy Hochul failed to address the state’s disastrous bail reform and rising crime.Stefans Jeremiah for New York Post

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s response has been: Let’s wait and see. The Legislature is not back in session until January.

New Era Democrats is an organization that welcomes differing opinions and open debate, and we’re troubled by Hochul’s recent comments urging Republicans and Zeldin to move to Florida. US Census data reports 350,000 people left the state in a single year, and we lost another congressional seat this cycle. The truth is Democrats and liberals are abandoning New York, too.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority continues to be one of the worst-run transportation systems in the world. The governor’s solution? Congestion pricing. We have been paying MTA surcharges on our utility bills and taxi rides for years. Where is the money?

In reality, crime and homelessness are rampant, the public does not feel safe, and people are nervous about public transportation post-COVID. And the congestion-pricing plan will devastate an already-crippled taxi and for-hire-vehicle industry struggling to recover. We cannot tax our way back into recovery. Congestion pricing will affect minimum-wage and working-class New Yorkers just as harshly.

NED endorses Lee Zeldin for governor. Lee, with two daughters, is family man concerned for his family, like most of us, and Lee’s family looks like New York. He’s traveling all over the state listening to New Yorkers.

Lee will work with Democrats, as he did in the state Senate, to provide reasonable solutions for our most pressing issues. Lee will investigate the COVID nursing-home failures so we are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

NED’s appeal to Democrats and independents is this: The race is about New York and its future, regardless of party affiliations and national politics. Public safety has been compromised, and New York has been mismanaged. Democratic governments were designed with checks and balances — and currently there are none in New York state.

The moderate voices of the Democratic Party are either going along to get along, too afraid to ruffle feathers, or have been silenced. We can no longer afford to be a one-issue voter. Lee will bring much-needed balance back to New York.

The issues are tangible: We see the vacant storefronts. We see the mentally ill/homeless on the streets with no hope. We feel the effects of the drug and opioid crisis destroying families. We are spending and borrowing more, and we are watching the value of our life savings decrease. We know the failed policies that killed thousands of elderly people in nursing homes.

We know, at this moment, we need a change — a balance of power and someone who will invite all parties to the table. That change is Lee Zeldin.

John Orlando is president of New Era Democrats.

DEBASING THE SOUL OF THE NATION

BY NOAH ROTHMAN

President Joe Biden’s primetime speech was ostensibly dedicated to itemizing domestic threats to the “soul of the nation,” all of which apparently emanate from the pro-Trump right. It was billed as an urgent call to action on a matter of grave national concern, but what the president turned in was a stump speech. In the process, he cheapened the moment, commodified the public’s apprehension over a rising tide of illiberalism on America’s political fringes, and strengthened the very menace he set out to condemn. Worst of all, these were not unintended consequences. That was Joe Biden’s goal.

Hours before Biden’s address, White House Press Sec. Karine Jean-Pierre gave reporters a preview of what they could expect. The president’s address would invoke themes he discussed in August 2017, in the immediate wake of racially charged violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. It would also harken back to his first inaugural address, where he was flanked by a Capitol Building still scarred from the January 6 riot. “You think about what we’re seeing today,” Jean-Pierre said. “You think about the battle that continues.”

Those two traumatic events had self-evident national significance, and Biden’s decision to weigh in on them met a delicate moment in American history with the aim of cooling the passions that fueled violence. But what occasioned Biden’s speech last night? It was not preceded by any episode of mass violence, no outpouring of primitive racial antagonism. The January 6 rioters are being systematically prosecuted by the legitimate executors of American justice, in whose crosshairs even the former president has found himself. What crisis is the American right precipitating? A keen observer might conclude that the acute “threat” to which the White House is responding is the Democratic Party’s political peril. If Democratic voters are not as anxious as the White House, the president’s party will lose political power to the GOP in America’s fair and impartial elections. How perverse.

Indeed, the goal of Biden’s demagoguery could only be to reinforce and accelerate the GOP’s amassing around Trump’s orbit, not to loosen the former president’s hold on his party. Biden opened with a perfunctory caveat, saying that the number of treasonous Republicans was likely to be small. But he then proceeded to draw the largest possible circumference around what constitutes the MAGA movement to capture as many conservatives as possible.

“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards,” Biden insisted. They’re after your “right to choose,” your “right to contraception,” your “right to marry who you love.” The president is here referring, in part, to Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurrence in Dobbs, in which he alone maintained that the Court’s decision imperils other precedents based on substantive due process. Disagree with that rationale all you like, but Biden equated this jurisprudential philosophy with street violence and the demolition of America’s institutions. There is no equivalence between those insurrectionary activities and the banal—indeed, proper—conduct of America’s courts. To make that connection in voters’ minds is reckless and irresponsible.

If it wasn’t yet obvious that the objective of this speech was to brand Republican voters “pro-insurrectionist,” the president’s whiplash-inducing swerve into a State of the Union address should be clarifying. What does Biden’s Covid-relief package, infrastructure spending, and gun-control legislation have to do with combating illiberal sentiments on the right? Biden is hoping that the case for Democratic governance enthuses otherwise listless Democratic voters. This served no other purpose than to incept in voters’ minds the idea that even opposing Democratic policy preferences renders you a little suspect. “American democracy only works,” Biden insisted, “if we respect our legitimate political differences.” By his own logic, therefore, the president is himself a reactionary.

Even the press’s formerly inexhaustible patience with this administration has been tested by this event. The Biden team baited reporters with the promise of a White House event only to deliver a campaign-trail speech festooned with the trappings of taxpayer-funded state power. To their credit, some prominent reporters refused to look past Biden’s decision to violate presidential norms as he was attacking his predecessor for the same. It may not last, but this address gave the press license to be a little less pliant.

Finally, with this ham-fisted attempt at psychological manipulation to raise Donald Trump from the political dead, the president has foreclosed on the idea that the Democratic campaign operatives spending millions to boost MAGA candidates in Republican primaries have gone rogue. This is a party-wide effort to elevate the very faction that supposedly represents an existential threat to the republic. The exquisite cynicism of this charade is breathtaking.

Had Biden set out to deliver a lofty sermon on the fragility of the American experiment and the Founders’ suspicions of ambitious men, it might have been a valuable exercise. The menace Joe Biden ostensibly sought to warn Americans about is real. But the president did not embark on a selfless effort to preserve American propriety and norms against anti-democratic forces. He did his best to strengthen the very movement he insists is a mortal threat to American democracy. He tethered himself and his administration to the Democratic Party’s material support for the MAGA movement. He undermined his mission, and he cheapened the office he holds.

If you’re inclined to accept Joe Biden’s premise—that “MAGA Republicans” represent “a threat to this country”—you should be furious at the way Biden commodified your solemn cause. Whoever conceived of this misadventure should be stripped of their capacity to debase the office of the presidency further. That does, however, assume that this wasn’t Biden’s idea in the first place. Given how incandescently boneheaded this spectacle was, we can’t rule that out.
