GMOA, Booth Western Art Museum And My Love of Art - How It Began.

Over the years many of you know I have served on Georgia's State Museum's Board (GMOA)and from time to time I have conducted several art tours to The GMOA, located on UGA's Athen's campus, The Booth Western Museum of Art in Cartersville, Ga., and another art tour in Alabama etc.  I have also encouraged art friends to go to Don Kole's African Museum here in Savannah.

Art became a permanent part of my life when I was stationed in France and purchased some five objects back in 1954-56. At the time, the Franc was 350 to one scrip dollar. I knew nothing about art then, nor do I now,. While in France I never paid over $14 scrip for anything I bought. One of the paintings I acquired was by Louis Valtat, a noted Fauve Impressionist, another a very cubistic scene by an artist named Verlinde and a third was of  bridge scene by a Catalan Artist named Marchand which we gave to GMOA. The other two were more genre objects I thought lovely andvery French.  One a beach scene of two children playing in the sand.

I recently asked Tricia, one of the many wonderful staff administrators at GMOA, would she be kind enough to send me a listing of the various works we have given or helped finance and she sent me the list accompanied by pictures which, lamentably, I find it impossible to re-post - ugh.

I am sending the list in the hope it will encourage those who have never been to GMOA to do so.  We are a teaching museum and have one of the finest print collections of any university in the South East.  We now have over 12,000 object of art but can only display 2 or so percent of our permanent collection in our own galleries and salons.

Some of our art is on loan to other museums because of its rarity and/or prominence. Our director, Bill Eiland, is one of the nation's most accomplished and knowledgeable directors and I often say we should hang/display Bill on the wall alongside some of our great works.

I would love to do one more tour before I depart this world but doubt I will get around to this"Walter Mitty" wish. All who have gone with me on past tours, I believe, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

My second reason for writing  this memo is to encourage those who own art, and might wish to part with it, to consider inquiring about leaving it to GMOA.  Our museum began with a magnificent  "genesis" gift of 100 objects left to The People of Ga. by a lawyer from New York, Alfred H.Holbrook, who spent time in Athens and was taken under wing by Lamar Dodd, not only a great administrator but one of the South's finest artist's and one of my dearest art friends. Our relationship stretched over 30 years. It began when I purchased one of Lamar's early works painted while he was in Italy. Lamar was born in La Grange and he was a student of some of America's greatest artists who were also teaching at The Art Student's League. in New York.

Below is a listing of the works, to date, we have given to The GMOA.
