BLANCA, RIP. BYE BYE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS. Hezbollah Rockets. Swell's New Book. American University Funding.

Blanca and Mannie Anton were members of a proud Spanish family.  They immigrated to Cuba, became prominent and beloved doctors, fled Castro with their children, came to Atlanta and reconstituted their respective medical practices. We befriended them and they became like family. Mannie passed away several years ago and Blanca last week.  They were courageous, wonderful, intelligent, loving and loved our family as we their's.

RIP Blanca.
                                    Two young love birds.

Who's Buying Up Small Newspapers in Rural Georgia?
By CHRIS QUEEN

It used to be that local newspapers were essential for people in small towns to know what was going on. Community newspapers were where townsfolks went for local news coverage, often with a quirky, gossipy twist.

Growing up, I'll always remember visiting my dad's family in the North Georgia mountains in a tiny town nestled on the border with Tennessee. Almost every time we were up there, the lead story in the little newspaper was a pot bust in the woods near some local resident's house, while a column called "Eva Dave's Coffee Break" dished on town gossip.

But over time, local papers began to die. Part of that stemmed from a lack of funding and advertising revenue drying up, but some of it was due to insular publishers and editors. Several years ago, I wrote religion features for my local newspaper, for which the paper woefully underpaid me. I had to give more coverage to the local Episcopal church than to other, more active congregations because that's where the publisher attended, and what he wanted to cover was what made the pages of the paper.

Recently, that same local paper gave its entire front page coverage to its winning an award as the third-best small-town paper in Georgia. The judges must either have been on drugs, or the competition was pathetic.

In a way, it's a sign of the competition of capitalism that local newspapers are becoming a thing of the past; if these outlets can't create a product that people want to pay for and read, then they don't deserve to survive. Still, it's sad to see local papers disappear.

We often see corporate conglomerates swooping in to save local papers, but in Middle and South Georgia, one group is buying up a bunch of local news outlets. Who is this group, and why is it alarming that the group is scooping up all these newspapers?

"The non-profit National Trust for Local News is establishing the Georgia Trust for Local News, a new community newspaper company that will serve Middle and South Georgia," trumpets a press release.

"The Georgia Trust will begin operations in January with a portfolio of 18 newspapers that serve 900,000 Georgians in communities across Middle and South Georgia and an initiative to stand up a new community news source in Macon," the announcement continues. "Georgia Trust titles will include iconic publications with deep roots in the communities they serve, like The Albany Herald, Dublin’s Courier Herald, The Sparta Ishmaelite, and The Talbotton New Era."

Not sure this is realistic but I get the basic idea and agree Trump is more of what we need than what Biden is doing.

Hezbollah Fires 60+ Rockets at Northern Israel on Shabbat Morning

By Hana Levi Julian

And:

With Hezbollah Attacking, an Israeli War With Lebanon Is Looking More Likely

Is an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah inevitable? Despite efforts by President Biden’s envoy, Amos Hochstein, the Israeli-Lebanese border seems on the verge of igniting.

Following a meeting with Mr. Hochstein on Thursday, Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, visited the northern border. “There is a short window of time for diplomatic understanding, which we prefer,” he said, adding, however, “We will not tolerate the threats posed by the Iranian proxy, Hezbollah, and we will ensure the security of our citizens.”

Hezbollah has been attacking Israeli border towns daily since October. Several rockets were lobbed from Lebanon Friday at Kiryat Shmona, the largest city in the region. Like other towns there, it is almost empty of civilians. More than 60,000 residents of northern Israel have been evacuated from their homes near the border.

“Residents of northern Israel must know that they won’t return home until the criminal Gaza war ends,” Hezbollah’s chief, Hasan Nasrallah, said Friday in his second threat-filled speech of the week. As he did on Wednesday, he vowed to avenge this week’s killing of a Hamas leader, Saleh al Arouri, near Hezbollah’s Beirut headquarters.

“We cannot sit quietly in the face of an assassination in the middle of the war, and the assassination will not go unpunished,” Mr. Nasrallah said Friday. “The response is coming. The decision has already been made. The matter now depends on what will unfold on the ground and on Allah.”

Yet, many Israelis and Lebanese doubt that the Hezbollah chief is looking for an all-out war. “Hezbollah can already claim it has liberated the Galilee,” a Beirut-based economist, Nadim Shehadi, tells the Sun. “Nasrallah doesn’t want war. He’s bluffing. All he wants is the current state of war to continue.”

The situation at Galilee is a mirror image of the 1980s, when the Israel Defense Forces occupied a “security belt” in southern Lebanon to keep Hezbollah off its border. Now, that belt has moved to the Israeli side, where the IDF is present and only a few civilians stay.

After the Israeli-Hezbollah war of 2006, the United Nations Security Council created the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, an international armed contingency charged with maintaining a 20-mile area free of armed militias between Lebanon’s Litany River and the Israeli border.

Yet, over the years Hezbollah’s well-armed and well-trained Radwan force has all but taken over southern Lebanon. Even prior to the current war, armed Hezbollah men could be seen from the Israeli side of the border without the help of binoculars.

Operating right next to Unifil posts, they menaced Galilee residents. Missiles, drones, and anti-tank rockets were amassed in southern Lebanon. The IDF exposed tunnels designed to infiltrate Israel.

Now, Mr. Hochstein is attempting to convince Hezbollah to withdraw its forces back to the area north of the Litany river. In return, America is reportedly offering help in securing the selection of a Hezbollah-favored Lebanese president, a position that has been vacant for months as part of a political standoff at Beirut.

Mr. Nasrallah scoffed at the American diplomacy, and Mr. Hochstein canceled a planned Beirut visit this week. Next week, Secretary Blinken is scheduled to travel to the region, as European envoys also try to coax Mr. Nasrallah. A large sum of foreign cash could help Lebanon out of its deep economic crisis and avert war.

America has also reportedly offered to mediate over 13 border spots that Hezbollah claims as Lebanese. Mr. Naasrallah used to justify his armed force as resistance to Israeli occupation. “Now it’s looking for an occupation to resist,” Mr. Shehadi says.

Israel is far from eager to open a full-blown northern front as it fights Hamas in Gaza. Yet, officials vow to create the conditions that would allow northern residents to securely return home. To do that, the IDF, which for now is mostly reactive to Hezbollah, will likely have to be more proactive.

“It’s tricky. The IDF must do more than it has, but stop short of an all-out war,” a former director of the Israeli foreign ministry, Alon Ushpiz, told channel 11 Television. “We must apply enough of a military stick to create incentive for Nasrallah to agree to a diplomatic carrot.”

On the other side, Mr. Nasrallah’s response to the killing of al-Arouri, who he has called “my friend,” could ignore a much larger war if it exacts a large number of Israeli casualties. Also, even if the Radwan force is pushed 20 miles north of the border, many northern Israelis fear returning home as long as Hezbollah remains fully armed.

Nor are the Lebanese confident that a war can be avoided. After all, “in the era of drones and rockets, it doesn’t make much difference” if Hezbollah retreats to the Litani river, Mr. Shehadi says.

Muslims take over Milan.  Where are Italians?

Finally:

What Biden does not comprehend, and never will, is Iran wants to take over the Middle East, drive American troops out and threaten Israel so Israeli's do not feel it is safe to live there and Israel eventually collapses.

This is why Israel must end Iran's rule by the Ayatollah's and their Qud protectors.  If America refuses to defend it's military from radical African tribes, then China has to be encouraged and can correctly conclude neither will America be effective in defending Taiwan.

America has become a pitiful "Gulliver."

I am now reading Tom Sowell's latest book.  It is not an easy read. Very challenging but excellent.  I am only on Chapter two.

American universities have received over 13 billion dollars from Islamist nations, as well as Russia and China.  These funds are seldom reported as required if laws mean anything and this money is used to fund departments that have caused the growth of anti-Semitism on their campuses.  Furthermore, their endowment funds remain  tax free.

Congress generally looks the other way and wonders why they are held in such low regard.  They would rather take trips, waste billions on pork to get re-elected and hold mostly ineffective hearings allowing them to grandstand.

Consequently, Congress's influence has declined and the executive branch's power has soared to the point we now have a monarchial president which our "founding fathers" sought to avoid/rejected.

You get what you allow so we have only ourselves to blame.  Yes, "the enemy is us."

Dem NJ Mayor Is Sending Migrants Back to the Border

(RepublicanReport.org) – Sanctuary cities across the United States continue to see buses arrive from border regions, where migrants are flooding in at overwhelming numbers. Several New Jersey cities have now been hit, leading one mayor to start sending his new arrivals straight back to the US-Mexico border. The leader, who is a Democrat, claimed the unexpected busloads of asylum seekers created unacceptable security and health risks, adding that he didn’t think passing the problem off to other US cities was the answer to the influx.

Desperate Times

Many of New Jersey’s immigration problems stem from Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ efforts to control the number of buses still coming to the Big Apple. He recently issued an executive order in hopes of reducing the rate of new arrivals, according to ABC 7 News, but Texas leaders have ignored it. And to further undermine Adams, the Lone Star State is reportedly using New Jersey as a hub to keep the pipeline of people flowing into New York.

New York City Hall Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg alleges that buses coming from Texas are no longer stopping at Port Authority. Instead, they’re taking their loads of migrants to train stations in New Jersey and giving them one-way tickets to New York’s Penn Station. Meanwhile, the federal government continues to stay as uninvolved as possible, claiming representatives have spoken to local leaders and offered resources to help. The response implies that the White House is leaving it up to officials in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and other affected states to figure out a solution despite repeated cries for additional assistance on the matter.

Desperate Measures

Newsmax reports that Edison, New Jersey, Mayor Sam Joshi’s solution to the attempts to send asylum seekers to his city is simply to tell law enforcement to send the new arrivals back to the border. He and other liberal city leaders in the Garden State have expressed that they don’t have the room or the resources to keep the mass loads of people Texas has sent through its transportation systems. Still, they agree they need to be as compassionate as possible about the problem.

Joshi shared a video on Facebook about his city’s recent involvement in the migrant crisis. He stated that he is the son of immigrants — but his parents went through the proper legal channels when they moved to the US. Joshi noted that speaking from his unique position, he could say that his responsibility, above all else, was to the people he served. The Edison mayor added that he understood the many barriers that add to people’s difficulties in gaining access to this great country, but the taxpayers of his small municipality would not be footing the bill for a problem the federal government should be handling.
