‘Merit Is No Longer Evil’ - WSJ
By James Freeman

This week on X Mr. Kuran, a Duke University economist, writes:

Preference falsification has been central to the trajectory of DEI. People who abhor DEI principles and methods came to favor these publicly through a preference cascade. Every instance of preference falsification induced others to pretend they consider DEI just, efficient, beneficial to marginalized groups, etc. In time, a false consensus effectively displaced the search for truth as the university’s core mission, replacing it with DEI.

Most professors watched in concealed horror the transfer of enormous powers from themselves to rapidly growing DEI bureaucracies. In countless contexts, they endorsed policies they considered harmful, participated in the defamation of scholars they admired, and sheepishly submitted to DEI training—all to be left alone, to avoid being called racist, to advance their careers. But the resulting equilibrium was self-undermining. In emboldening DEI officials, it increased privately felt anger and resentment. The stage was set for a preference cascade in reverse.

The shock that unleashed the ongoing cascade in reverse was the Hamas massacres of October 7. The chain of events that they triggered in the U.S.—anti-Jewish demonstrations, the Congressional hearings, the plagiarism revelations—brought to the surface outrage that had been building up quietly for years. As public criticism of DEI grew, and as it became clear that broad segments of the left share the outrage, the DEI-favoring false consensus disintegrated.

The process is by no means over. As preference falsification on DEI continues to diminish, more scholars and administrators will find in themselves the courage to stand up for values that they truly believe in. Though the DEI complex will fight back, it won’t be easy to quash the honest discourse finally under way. Public critics of DEI know they aren’t alone.

Mr. Kuran adds:

For years, DEI advocates spoke from high moral ground. Only the deranged could be against inclusion. Diversity (as defined by DEI experts) was self-evidently beneficial. Since October 7, the moral high ground has shifted. DEI has been exposed as a sham. Merit is no longer evil.

On X Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen suggests some homework:

Make a list of all the things you believe, but can’t say. Then a list of things you don’t believe, but must say.

Getting to the Bottom of the Biden Business

According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, a majority of registered voters say that Joe Biden is not honest. Who can blame them given how many falsehoods he’s told about his family’s enrichment schemes? But perhaps congressional oversight can force accurate disclosure. Today the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability announced it will meet next Wednesday to consider a resolution to hold the president’s son Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying lawful subpoenas.

DeSantis Wins Another National Election

This week U-Haul announced the winner and still champion of American relocations:

Florida destinations dominated the U.S. growth cities list again in 2023, with the Palm Bay-Melbourne market netting the largest number of movers in one-way U-Haul® equipment last year.

The U-Haul Growth Index found seven Florida markets among the top 25 growth cities last year... Ocala, the No. 1 growth city in 2022, backslides one spot in the latest rankings. The Sarasota-Bradenton market ranks fourth just behind Charleston-North Charleston (S.C.). Austin is the fifth-ranked growth city – the first of three top-10 Texas destinations along with the College Station-Bryan market and Dallas.

U-Haul calculates growth cities by each city’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year.

...And Now a Prediction for This Year’s Election

Chris Churchill writes in the Albany Times Union about a perennial loser:

The numbers have become a not-so-happy tradition of the festive season. Each year, right around Christmas, the U.S. Census Bureau releases data suggesting that New York has suffered yet another population decline.

The latest release contained a slight bit of good news, in that the state’s estimated population drop of 101,000 people during the one-year period ending July 1 was not as bad as during the prior 12 months. But it was still bad enough to make New York’s decline the largest in the country in both total and percentage. Happy Holidays!

There’s an active debate over which expensive aspects of the state’s poor governance are most responsible for the continuing population decline.

But wait ’til this year! Mr. Churchill notes that the Empire Center’s E.J. McMahon “expects the population outflow to slow and perhaps even stop in the next census examination, despite the usual inaction from Albany lawmakers. Higher mortgage rates, he notes, are making Americans far less willing and able to move, even when they might otherwise want to.” Concludes Mr. Churchill: “So, there’s a little good news for you. More New Yorkers will stay but not because they are happier with their state and lives. They’ll stay because they’re stuck. Excelsior!”

Who will lead a campaign to restore U-Haul democracy and allow stranded homeowners to escape New York?

***

Cinéma et Vérité
In the course of reviewing a film this week, the Journal’s Kyle Smith offers potentially useful advice on familial relations:

... the importance of achieving a consensus about the truth must be weighed against the possible benefits of achieving equilibrium by forgetting, or at least forgiving.

GOOD NEWS ISRAEL

As we welcome in 2024, I think we would all welcome a better year than 2023.

Parents of IDF lone soldiers have been flown to Israel to give a surprise welcome to their children. And a support group of parents have enlisted famous personalities to record videos of welcome messages to those soldiers.

Several welcome potential cures were undergoing human trials last week. A stent for blocked leg arteries; Nitric Oxide for cancer; and a device to prevent delirium in immobile hospital patients.  New Israeli technology includes a system that welcomes you and then parks your car automatically. And now that welcome rains have arrived, a solar farm's systems redirects the water to irrigate crops efficiently.

Israeli startups have received welcome funding for nine joint US-Israeli clean energy projects. Meanwhile positive results in the war against Hamas means that many startups are welcoming back employees from reserve duties.

New arrivals welcomed to Israel included 18 graduates of the Zionist Leadership Academy; a late surge of new immigrants, including a 95-year-old veteran from Israel's 1948 War of Independence; and two species of rare birds, making their first visits to Israel. Finally, an Israeli synagogue welcomed a new Torah scroll, which had been completed by thousands of IDF soldiers in Gaza, secular Kibbutz members and survivors of the Supernova party.

The photo is of the Newborn center at Tel Aviv's Ichilov (Sourasky) Medical Center - one of the Israeli hospitals that welcomed 179,000 new babies in 2023. Notice the helicopter landing pad on the roof - large enough to welcome the vast numbers of storks bringing in the new arrivals! (warning - fake news😊)

POSITIVE NEWS DURING A WAR

More heroes of Oct 7. (TY UWI) Brothers Daniel and Neria Sharabi, saved dozens of lives at the Supernova music festival on Oct 7 by providing fire cover for escapees with weapons they found in a tank, while receiving instructions over the phone from an IDF officer. They also treated the wounded who were hiding with them.

Operation Hug. Some very emotional scenes as Nefesh b’Nefesh flies out parents to Israel to greet their lone soldier children serving in combat units. There is no guarantee that the IDF will release the soldiers to meet up with their parents but just see the reaction when they do! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw8T6_lfvTk

Word of the Year – Resilience. Israel21c’s Word of the Year for 2023 is Resilience. Israeli NGO Eran defines it as “the ability to enlist internal resources such as flexible thinking, creativity and a willingness to receive help, together with external resources, in order to overcome the challenges and obstacles that always face us.”

Just see what Israelis can recycle. IDF reservist Dan Levit is VP of R&D at Israel’s U-Tron Parking. He assembled a team to rehabilitate 24 decommissioned IDF tanks and then trained volunteers to operate them. The appropriately named “Phoenix” tank battalion is already seeing action in Gaza. And the IDF wants more.

ISRAEL’S MEDICAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Cure for Peripheral Artery Disease sounds good. Israel’s NovaPulse has developed a “virtual” stent that opens blocked arteries in the legs. The implant sits just under the skin on the leg; when the patient moves, they generate ultrasound waves that dilate the implant, allowing oxygenated blood to flow from the heart.

Restoring sanity in the ICU. Two Israeli hospitals (Beilinson and Assuta Ashdod) are trialing the innovative communication headset for locked-in patients developed by Israel’s EyeControl (see here previously). They want to see if it can reduce the incidences of delirium (nightmares & hallucinations) in ICU patients.

Computer games can lift depression. Neuroscientist Prof. Moshe Bar co-founded Israel’s Hedonia and created the computer game Mood Bloom to reduce negative feelings. It is based on a therapy called Facilitating Thought Progression (FTP) in which mini games require the player to focus less on circular thoughts.

A 2 state solution has always been a losing concept because the majority of Palestinians are no better than Hamas. Why?  Because they remain committed to ending the existence of Israel.

Consequently, I propose a 3 sate solution. One for terrorists, another for Palestinians who love their children and are not committed to the destruction of Israel and Israel as presently constituted.

This may not stop attacks on Israel by terrorists but, at least when the IDF and IAF attack, Israel may avoid blowback as they will be freer to level the entire 3rd state.
+++
I seriously doubt most Americans equate what is going on now as being a prelude to the 3rd world war, as happened prior to WW 2.

I doubt most link the war in Ukraine, Israel's war with Hamas and soon to expand to include Hezbollah and Iran, rocket attacks from Houthi that have disrupted commercial sea lanes, threats from  Xi towards Taiwan, China's expansion of influence in Africa and the continued bellicosity emanating from N Korea.  I can and have. I believe what is happening is a prelude to WW 3.

In fact, Biden's passivity and weakness is actually spurring the war he claims he wishes to avoid.

His tragic withdrawal from Afghanistan has to have made Xi and Putin drool. The failure to convincingly respond to attacks on our troops stationed in the Middle East signals pusillanimity. Finally,  the stationing of  a large segment of out shrinking navy only to launch million dollar missiles to destroy nickel and dime ones, from a tribe of African terrorists, is pathetic.

Meanwhile, Biden and his equally pathetic minions continue to press Israel to back away from its commitment to destroy Hamas simply adds more encouraging dangerous signals  to our adversaries throughout the entire world.

Ironic as it may be, the 3rd WW could start after Trump's re-election and yet, he will have had nothing to cause this tragedy. After all, history is replete with evidence that Democrats are notorious for failing to support of our military.  Rather they prefer increasing welfare hand outs.
