I find it hard to argue with his dour viewpoint but perhaps the West will come to its senses and protect its culture and civilization. I will not be around to find out how the story ends.
Another response from another dear long time friend, fellow memo reader and a great psychiatrist: " Well Dick, all I can tell you after re-reading the Phillips' article is that I concur with her postulates, however I do not feel so negative, thinking that eventually perhaps we can turn things around. We need more positive propaganda in favor of Israel and a constant vocal negation of the pro Muslim press.
The problem is how to enlighten the press to be more balanced and convince them of decrying Muslim claims they are right on what they do."
More my own sense of things but not sure the press, media and academics are willing and/or able to change. Their views are ingrained and they are too protective of their mind set. They have so much invested in being wrong. Radical Muslims also believe they are right and prove daily they are willing to die themselves and kill others.

This is an article that appeared in our local paper. Jane Nangle, the author, is a dear friend, has spoken for me twice at my Speaker Series about her dedicated accomplishments to establish a highly professional facility (Pine Woods) that provides help for those afflicted with mental disorders so they can live independently and enjoy a productive life.
As one can see from her photo, Jane and her dedication and accomplishments attest to the fact that she is both beautiful in and out. (See 1 below.)

Tomorrow Obama will make a speech that will, most likely, be untypical. Obama is smart enough to understand he cannot be his usual sniping and acerbic self. His Far Left cronies have walked down that alley for him and the political hay they were trying to make out of the tragedy has turned to sawdust in their mouths because most Americans know better, are not buying and is not factually based.
Obama is working hard at bringing about the change he promised but it turns out it is all about changing himself and our perception of him. That is not going to be easy because it was only a few months ago Obama campaigned by telling Democrats they should 'bring guns to the table if Republicans brought knives' and telling Republicans they 'needed to go to the back of the bus.' Before the mid year campaign Obama was constantly castigating executives and Wall Street types and calling them greedy and worse.
Obama is learning toothpaste is not easy to get back in the tube.
What is sad is these kind of heart wrenching events bring out all types and attitudes and thus cast more clouds over what is already another dark day in our nation's history.
Would it not be nice if we could learn about and apprehend these types before they commit such crimes but we will never live in a perfect world.

1)Why getting help is critical

Saturday's tragedy in Arizona has filled our TV screens all weekend. The tragic shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others, resulting in the tragic death of six innocents, including a child, has us all asking at least two questions:
How could this happen?
What can we do to keep it from happening again?
It happened because a young man who has been deeply troubled by mental illness for four years was not in treatment for that illness.
Psychologists interviewed on all the major television stations recounted the facts:
-- He began to withdraw from his friends when he was in high school, started using alcohol and drugs and dropped out.
-- He was removed from Pima Community College by campus police five times for disruptive behavior and eventually told not to return to campus without a psychiatric report saying he was not dangerous to himself or others.
-- He was not accepted by the Army.
-- He had a long string of arrests.
-- He put incoherent ranting on the Internet reflecting disorganized thought and delusional belief in mind control.
-- He was obsessed with the effect bad grammar was having on him and believed that he was the treasurer of a new currency.
A freshman psychology course would tell you that these are textbook signs of schizophrenia.
Are people with schizophrenia dangerous? Not if they are in treatment.
People who are taking medication for mental illness and those who are actively in treatment are no more dangerous than the general public. But, as Saturday's tragedy illustrates, people who have mental illness and are not receiving treatment - especially those who are abusing alcohol or drugs - can be dangerous.
That is why providing treatment to people who are mentally ill is so critical.

2)A Republican showdown?

They say that, in politics, "overnight is a lifetime." In other words, the journey from triumphant hero to discredited scapegoat can be very brief.
In the wake of the Republicans' triumphs in last November's elections, great hopes are being held out that Republican control of the House of Representatives can slam the brakes on Barack Obama's march toward a completely government-controlled economy and ruinous deficit spending.
The first big step toward that goal could be forcing the Obama administration to cut back on spending, as the price of raising the national debt ceiling, which will be necessary early on in this new Congress, if the federal government is not going to be forced to shut down for lack of money.
Much of the runaway spending in Washington has been a spending of money that the government doesn't have in the till, by borrowing money through the sale of government bonds-- in other words, running up a record high national debt.
Because there is a legal limit on how much national debt the government can create, the spending has to be cut back or the debt ceiling increased by Congress. Otherwise, the government is going to have to shut down many of its operations for lack of money.
Some people see this as a golden opportunity for the new Republican majority to gain concessions from the Obama administration, as the price for going along with an increase in the national debt. It sounds logical. But logic is not always the dominant factor in politics.
The last time the government shut down, back during the Clinton administration, the Republicans were riding high as a result of their capture of the House of Representatives-- where all spending bills must originate-- for the first time in decades.
Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich seemed to hold all the high cards. But the government shutdown ruined Republicans politically.
Congress had increased the amount of money appropriated for the government to spend, though not by as much as President Clinton wanted. So it was Clinton who shut down the government, though it was the Republicans who got blamed.
Sometimes it doesn't matter who holds the high cards, if the other side plays their cards better.
Today, the Republicans don't hold as many high cards as they did back during the Clinton administration. How did they lose then -- and what are their chances of losing now, if they try to force serious concessions from the administration, and Obama calls their bluff by daring them to shut down the government?
Often, in politics, it doesn't matter what the facts are. What matters is how well you make your case to the voting public.
Back in 1995, Bill Clinton and the Congressional Democrats, with the aid of the media, pounded away on the theme that the Republicans had "cut" government programs, even where the Republicans had appropriated more money than these programs had ever had before.
What Republicans had cut was the amount that Clinton had asked for. You might think that this was a fairly obvious difference and that this could be explained to the public. But the Republicans failed to do so effectively.
It was painful to watch various Republican spokesmen come on television and talk about discrepancies between Congressional Budget Office statistics and statistics from the Office of Management and Budget. This might have been fascinating stuff in a seminar on accounting, but it was like Greek to many TV viewers.
If the Republicans cannot be bothered to put in the time and the hard work required to develop an effective articulation of their case, then they deserve to lose. But the country does not deserve to have disastrous policies continue.
While the case for having the government play Santa Claus is easier to make, the opposite case is by no means impossible to make. Radio talk-show hosts from Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity and many others make that case every day, in plain language that anyone can understand.
If Republicans still do not appreciate the enormous importance of articulation, then forcing a shutdown of the government can be another political disaster for them. So can caving in to Obama.
