Pacifying a Warrior Society
By Sherwin Pomerantz
In the runup to Israel’s plan to eliminate Hamas from the Gaza strip, there are, once again. extended discussions about collateral damage. That is, the number of non-combatant civilians who will lose their lives as a result of the fighting and the immorality of it all. Too often those discussions are cast in the framework of proportionality which is a red herring that clearly distracts from the core issues at hand.
The real issue is how does to change a warrior society like Hamas into a society that values life and becomes a constructive member of the community of nations? We need only to look at some historical examples to get the answer.
The short answer is that to pacify a warrior society it first needs to be destroyed or understand that if it does not change it will be destroyed.
The most recent historical examples are those of World War II. Both Germany and Japan were warrior nations bent on using their power to wage war in the hope that they would end up victorious and in control. How did the allied powers finally win the battle? Certainly not by years of brutal war in Europe and the South Pacific with the attendant loss of so many lives on both sides of the conflict. Not at all. At one point in time the political or military leadership or some combination of both made the decision that, no matter the loss of civilian lives, full destruction was the only answer.
In Europe In four raids between February 13-15 1945, 772 heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city. The bombing and the resulting firestorm destroyed more than 6.5 km2 of the city center. Up to 25,000 people were killed. Three more USAAF air raids followed, two occurring on March 2nd aimed at the city's railway marshalling yard and one smaller raid on April 17 aimed at industrial areas.
Germany then realized that they had lost the war and two months later, on May 7th they surrendered to the Allies. After the war the victors worked to rebuild Germany laying the foundation for what it is today, a thriving economic engine that has set the pace for most of the European continent coupled with a very limited military capability.
A similar situation played out in the Pacific theater with the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima (on August 6 1945) and Nagasaki on August 9th, flattening both cities. The bombs killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people and the Japanese surrendered a week later on August 15th. The victors, as in Europe, helped rebuild Japan into what it became, a leading industrial power in east Asia with a pacifist outlook on the world.
We Jews were also a warrior nation during the time prior to the destruction of the Temple. We don’t like to talk about it a lot but the evidence is clear and acknowledged. The destruction of the Temple and the laying waste of Palestine by the Romans neutralized the warrior aspect of our society but it took 2,000 years for us to regain our sovereignty and become a contributory member of the community of nations. And the rest is history as we became a technological power with military and economic strength as well.
very well, for sure.
It is a bit ironic of course, that in Rome’s recent desire to show their solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack of October 7th, they chose to do so by lighting up the Arch of Titus focusing on the menorah at its top which depicts the plunder of Jerusalem. Someone there did not know their history
And that brings us to Hamas and Gaza. Using the lessons of history, to eliminate Hamas and neutralize the warrior nation aspect of that society, we may have no alternative but to destroy it, even though many innocent civilians will be caught in the crossfire. It may be that only then will our enemies learn the history lesson from us that has escaped them in their earlier studies.
Yes, an invasion of Gaza will cause a lot of relatively innocent people to lose their lives. But history has shown that oftentimes to build a society it first has to be destroyed as there may be no other way to pluck out the cancer that is the warrior tendency. And for those who may argue that there is no proof that Hamas is a warrior society, once only has to look at the events of October 7th where there was no military objective, no hope of really gaining control of Israel, no hope of securing a strategic advantage….there was only one goal, to kill as many Jews as possible. Sadly for us, they did that every well but the price they need to pay will be very high.
Former US President John F. Kennedy once said: “War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today.” May it be soon.

Iran warns ‘time is up’ in ominous message to Israel as concerns mount of a World War III
By Melissa Koenig
Iran’s foreign minister warned in an ominous tweet Wednesday morning that time is “running out” for Israel following an attack on a hospital in Gaza, as experts grow concerned about a potential third world war.
Hossein Amir-Abdallohian shared the chilling message after hundreds died Tuesday in a missile strike at a Gaza City hospital, which Israel has claimed was caused by a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group
“After the terrible crime of the Zionist regime in the bombing and massacre of more than 1,000 innocent women and children in the hospital, the time has come for the global unity of humanity against this fake regime more hated than ISIS and its killing machine,” Amir-Abdollahian tweeted.
“Time is OVER!”
The Iranian Embassy in Syria also tweeted “time is up” in both Hebrew and Arabic.
The troubling message came just days after Amir-Abdollahian warned that a regional network of militias dubbed the “axis of resistance” would open “multiple fronts” against Israel if it continued to kill civilians in Gaza.
He said Wednesday morning, “The time has come for the global unity of humanity against this fake regime more hated than ISIS and its killing machine.”

The sentiment was echoed on the page for the Iranian Embassy in Syria.
“Time is running out very fast,” Amir-Abdollahian said during a live televised interview with Iranian state television Monday night, according to the New York Times.
“If the war crimes against the Palestinians are not immediately stopped, other multiple fronts will open and this is inevitable.”
The latest warning came just hours after Hamas accused Israel of killing more than 500 people in an airstrike at the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital — which Israel has denied, insisting it was the work of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group.
“An enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed in the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit,” IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in a statement.
“According to intelligence information, from several sources we have, the GAP organization is responsible for the failed shooting that hit the hospital.”
Still, Iran was also quick to condemn Israel for the attack, with Nasser Kan’ani, a spokesman for the country’s foreign ministry, calling it a “savage war crime” an an instance of “genocide.”
He accused Israel of carrying out a “bestial and appalling crime,” and said in a statement: “The Zionist regime of Israel once again revealed its savagery and inhumanity to the world and proved that it has no slightest adherence to the principles and rules of international law during times of war.”
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni also suggested Israeli officials “should be tried for their crimes.”
Iran’s threats have caused some to become concerned that if Iran escalate the war in Gaza, it could even bring Russia into the conflict — creating a potential Third World War.

Russian officials have already spoken out against the hospital attack, with Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, saying that Israel must provide satellite images to prove it was not involved, according to the Mail.
“So far, Russia and China have remained relatively restrained in their public statements, but if Iran gets directly involved, Russia is likely to feel compelled to support it due to Iran providing important missile and UAV supplies and training support to the Russian military in its war against Ukraine,” Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow at London‘s Royal United Services Institute, explained in an essay for the Mail.
Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, who doubles as a financial historian, also warned that if the conflict spreads to “major countries, there will be a much more horrific hot World War.
Israeli officials denied the report from Hamas, claiming the hospital was not hit by an IDF airstrike, but was instead the victim of a faulty rocket launched by the terrorist group.
“It seems to me the Israeli-Hamas war is another classic, unfortunate step toward a more violent and encompassing war,” he wrote on LinkedIn.
King Abdullah II of Jordan, a major US ally, has also said: “This war, which has entered a dangerous phase, will plunge the region into an unspeakable disaster.”
After more than 10 days of the war, at least 3,000 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis have been killed, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Israeli officials have vowed to destroy Hamas in an expected ground invasion of Gaza, with IDF soldiers also looking to rescue the more than 150 taken hostage by Hamas.

As I wrote in a previous memo, Hamas knows it cannot defeat Israel so, from this point forward, it will rely upon propaganda to heighten attacks on Israel.
Palestinians are hot blooded and always react extremely emotionally, particularly when Israel is involved. Facts mean nothing to them and Hamas knows how to stir them. Hamas also knew Biden was coming and they wanted to disrupt his visit.

Hard to imagine a worse example of journalistic malpractice than the media (AP, NYTimes, CNN, Reuters, etc) who rushed to judgement by buying the Hamas lie that Israel bombed a Gaza hospital and murdered 500. Of course, now that damage is done, they will gently walk it back.

The Al Jazeera channel saves Israel from the lie that it is responsible for the attack on the hospital.
Attached here is a recording of Aljazeera's live broadcast today against the background of Gaza.
Pay attention to the broadcast time on the right. 18:59 - In the background we can see a failed launch that crashes inside the Gaza strip - exactly at the time when the red alert warning was activated across Israel.
The line of reports running at the bottom of the page talks about the elimination of Iman Nofal so that the broadcast is certainly from today.
Do you remember that I wrote to you that the incident was first reported around 19:10 (I will immediately provide proof)?
That is, a reasonable period of time of about ten minutes from the moment of the impact to the Gaza news channels.
Here is live proof courtesy of Aljazeera - a launch from Gaza is responsible for the impact inside the Gaza Strip
Thanks to the “Hot News” Telegram channel for the video!

An Iran Proxy, Islamic Jihad, Turns Out To Be the Culprit That Rocketed a Christian Hospital in Gaza City, Israel Defense Forces Conclude
‘Those who murder our children also murder their children,’ Netanyahu says after the official conclusion is reached.
In an indication that Hamas is winning the propaganda war a mere 12 days after committing the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, Arab and Western leaders — and the New York Times — have quickly adopt the terrorists’ version of events that accuses Israel of killing hundreds of innocents in an air attack on a Gaza hospital.
Hamas issued a statement Tuesday evening, declaring that some 500 people were killed and hundreds injured in an Israeli air attack on Al Ahali al Arabi, a hospital at Gaza City. Prime Minister Netanyahu then countered that Islamic Jihad rockets shot toward Israel were the culprit.
Even before the Israeli version came out, the Hamas version was almost universally adopted as gospel. The Palestinian Authority’s president, Mahmoud Abbas, immediately left Amman, Jordan, where he was scheduled to participate in a summit with President Biden Wednesday, and declared a three-day period of mourning across the Palestinian territories.
Jordan then unilaterally announced that it will cancel the planned summit, which was designed to discuss humanitarian aid to Gaza civilians, Israel’s Channel 12 television is reporting. The Israeli embassy at Amman was besieged by hostile protesters. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and several other Arab countries immediately issued condemnations. American press outlets joined in.
The Times led its website with the headline, “Israeli Strikes Hits Gaza Hospital, Killing 500, Palestinian Health Ministry says.” Like all other Gaza authorities, the health ministry is controlled by Hamas.
Western leaders were quick to wag fingers as well. “The news coming out of Gaza is horrific and absolutely unacceptable,” Prime Minister Trudeau said. “International law needs to be respected in this and in all cases. There are rules around wars and it’s not acceptable to hit a hospital.”
As it turns out, all that was wrong. More than an hour after the initial report from Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces spokesman issued a statement on its official Telegram channel. “Based on analysis of the IDF’s operational systems, a salvo of rockets aimed at Israel flew close to the hospital when it was hit,” it said. “Based on intelligence from several of our sources, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad is responsible for the failed shooting that hit the hospital.”
Mr. Netanyahu repeated the text in English and added in Hebrew that the “barbaric terrorists are responsible for the hit on the hospital. Those who murder our children also murder their children.” That sentiment was also expressed by the leader of the opposition in the Knesset, Yair Lapid.
Earlier, another opposition Knesset member, Avigdor Liberman, wrote on X that the cause of the explosion was “likely a ‘work accident’” — an Israeli formulation for a common phenomenon in the war going back years: failed attacks by Hamas and its allies that hit Palestinians instead of the intended Israelis.
“The explosion indicates,” Mr. Liberman said, “that under the hospital there was a large cache of explosives and rockets, which is a war crime.”
As several commentators in Israel noted, for 11 days many on American campuses and in newsrooms have been raising endless doubts and quibbling over details of the October massacre of more than 1,400 Israeli citizens. The same people are adopting the Hamas version of a deadly incident in Gaza without even waiting to hear Israel’s detailing of the facts.

I have been critical of Biden and will always have my concerns but I have to take my hat off to him for his expressions and his willingness to go to Israel to make them. Most extraordinary, particularly because of his personal physical and mental issues.
