Kirkland & Ellis Favors Human Traffickers Over Gun Owners
By Erick-Woods Erickson
Paul D. Clement served as the 43rd Solicitor General of the United States. Highly respected, Clement argued before the Supreme Court from 2005-2008 for President George W. Bush and then built a private appellate practice with a large win record.
As a partner for the law firm Kirkland & Ellis, Clement took numerous contentious cases before the Supreme Court including representing the plaintiffs in New York State Rife & Pistol Association v. Bruen, decided yesterday in the United States Supreme Court. Clement’s clients won and the Supreme Court ordered six states to end their concealed carry statutes that allow state officials to subjectively deny carry permits. The other states all have objective carry permits whereby gun owners, if they complete certain tasks, will get a permit. New York’s allowed the bureaucrats in charge to act with subjective discretion.
After winning the case, instead of getting congratulated by his fellow partners at Kirkland & Ellis, Clement was told to either abandon second amendment clients or find a new job. He is leaving the firm after a very successful career there.
For perspective, Kirkland & Ellis represented human trafficker and serial child rapist Jeffrey Epstein. In Epstein’s criminal trial, though the law firm did not directly represent Epstein, it certainly had some ties.
Kirkland & Ellis is not representing accused sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein this time around, but the law firm and its alumni’s prints are all over his current criminal case in New York federal court.
Epstein’s criminal case history includes several Kirkland litigators, past and present, including longtime partner Jay Lefkowitz and former Kirkland litigators Alexander Acosta, now U.S. labour secretary, and Kenneth Starr.
With Epstein’s arrest on July 6 for sex trafficking, and a government investigation into a plea deal reached by Epstein’s attorneys in 2007, actions by those Kirkland litigators will likely receive fresh scrutiny.
In other words, Kirkland & Ellis is more comfortable representing human traffickers than law abiding American citizens whose constitutional rights have been infringed.
This is what happens when law firms go woke.

Senate Shoots Down Biden’s Anti-Semitic Ambassador Pick
By Adam Kredo
The Senate on Thursday morning voted not to advance the Biden administration's nominee to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Brazil to a full vote, less than a day after the Washington Free Beacon reported on the candidate's past remarks about the "Jewish lobby" and its "major money."
Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, a longtime diplomat and Democratic Party insider, was shot down by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by a party-line vote of 11-11. While Bagley was initially expected to clear the committee and move on to a full Senate confirmation vote, the Free Beacon‘s Wednesday evening reporting on her comments about the Jewish community are said to have galvanized Republican opposition.
The Free Beacon‘s reporting on Bagley's remarks stunned GOP members of the committee, according to one senior congressional Republican staffer working on the matter.
"The Biden admin knew that Democrats would fall into line, but once Republicans read the things she had said, no one was going to vote for her," the source said.
Bagley's comments about Jewish money in politics were widely condemned as anti-Semitic and raised concerns among members of both parties. Bagley's nomination is now in limbo, with Democrats no longer having the Republican support needed to push her through to a full vote in the Senate.
"Brazil is an extremely important ally to the United States in South America and in the Western Hemisphere, and we share common values and ideals—especially with regard to respect of religious freedoms and democratic ideals," Sen. James Risch (R., Idaho), the committee's ranking member, said in a statement. "Unfortunately, Ms. Bagley's statements in a 1998 interview insinuating that Jewish and Cuban Americans' motivations and voting practices are based on ‘major money' and ‘radical' opposition to the Castro regime fly in the face of those shared values. For this reason, I could not support her nomination.
Bagley in a 1998 interview reviewed by the Free Beacon lamented "the influence of the Jewish lobby because there is major money involved." She claimed that "the Democrats always tend to go with the Jewish constituency on Israel and say stupid things, like moving the capital to Jerusalem always comes up." Support for Israel-related issues are mainly due to "the Jewish factor, it's money," Bagley said. The interview was conducted by a historian at the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training for an oral history project.
"There is always the influence of the Jewish lobby because there is major money involved," Bagley said in the interview.
Claims that American Jews and pro-Israel advocates nefariously manipulate politicians into supporting the Jewish state have long been considered anti-Semitism.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a watchdog group that combats anti-Semitism, called on President Joe Biden to withdraw Bagley's nomination over her comments.
Bagley "must remove herself from consideration to represent the American people in Brazil. If she doesn't, the president or secretary of state should," the organization tweeted on Thursday.
When questioned about these remarks during a May 18 confirmation hearing with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bagley said they were the result of a "free-flowing discussion" with the interviewer.
"I regret that you would think that it was a problem," Bagley said at the time in her defense. "I certainly didn't mean anything by it. It was a poor choice of words, but it was something that the interviewer had asked me, prompted by something about politics."
Democrats during the hearing expressed concern about Bagley's rhetoric.
"The language you used in regard to the Jewish community, Israel's influence on our election, and Jewish money have me concerned," Sen. Ben Cardin (D., Md.) said during the hearing. "The choice of words … fit into the traditional tropes of anti-Semitism."

Boston City Councilor Goes On Anti-Semitic Rant After BDS Loses in Court
By Adam Kredo and Joseph Simonson
A Democratic Boston city councilor is under fire for informing her constituents that they are "letting the Zionists SHAKE YOU DOWN," rhetoric that a watchdog group says is grossly anti-Semitic.
"Ya'll are letting the Zionists SHAKE YOU DOWN," Boston city councilor Kendra Lara tweeted on Thursday, referencing a court decision this week that upheld a law targeting the anti-Semitic campaign to boycott Israel. She later deleted the tweet.
Lara—a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and an ally of "Squad" member Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.) who took the far-left congresswoman's "policy pledge"—quickly came under fire for the tweet, with one user of the social media site saying her language is identical to that used by "neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers."
"Oh I get it! The use of the phrasing was lost on me but I have been told now, thank you!" she tweeted in response.
Later that day, she clarified that she was talking about a federal court's ruling this week to uphold an Arkansas law that bars the state government from contracting with an entity that supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which wages economic warfare on Israel. Then she issued copious apologies, saying that reinforcing "anti-Semitic tropes about the Jewish people" was not her intent and that she "should have known better." She then deleted her original tweet.
Lara is one of many far-left activists to condemn the anti-BDS court decision. The decision is seen as a bellwether for other anti-BDS laws that are being challenged by anti-Israel forces across America.
Lara's comments are a thinly veiled shot at American Jews, according to Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a watchdog group that combats anti-Semitism.
"Will the city councilor be held accountable for her slur by her peers, by the media, by the voters, for this screed?" Cooper said in comments to the Washington Free Beacon. "Why would a local politician in Boston get worked up over an Arkansas court upholding anti-BDS laws—an important tool to fight back against anti-Semitic BDS? Maybe because she hates ‘Zionists'—read Jews."
Lara has repeatedly used this type of rhetoric in the past.
When Ben & Jerry's pulled out of Israel as part of its support for the BDS movement, Lara mocked pro-Israel advocates who launched their own boycott of the company.
"Zionists: *Googles how to ethnically cleanse ice cream company*," she tweeted in July 2021. The tweet is a reference to unfounded accusations by anti-Israel activists that Israel is engaged in the genocide of Palestinians. These types of remarks are widely considered anti-Semitic.
"Oh, the blue check mark Zionists have found me. *Mutes tweet*," Lara tweeted after her initial missive drew pushback.
Cooper said that Lara's rhetoric embodies "two of the most distressing aspects of anti-Semitism today in America"—"violent Jew-hatred" and the "increasing of open, blatant Jew-hatred in the mainstream of our society."
There is "little or no accountability or consequences" for targeting Jewish people in this way, Cooper said, adding that "anti-Semitic hate crimes"—which are rising at steep rates—"don't happen in a vacuum."
Neither Lara nor Pressley responded by press time to a Free Beacon request for comment.

The Supreme Court Hands Down Major Victory To Freedom-Loving Americans
Until today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) had not made it clear that the right to keep and bear arms is protected outside the home; but now it has! Townhall's headline today reads, "Supreme Court Hands Down Biggest Second Amendment Victory since Heller." Indeed, this is a major historic ruling.

At-risk Democrats distance themselves from Biden ahead of midterm elections
Democratic darlings Stacey Abrams and Sen. Raphael Warnock have recently released a slate of policy proposals on energy, crime, and abortion rights in an effort to energize their party's base and turn the political conversation away from President Joe Biden's dismal approval ratings and toward their plan for Georgians as they head into tough midterm matchups.
Abrams, the gubernatorial candidate running against incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in a rematch of 2018, announced a multipronged plan on Thursday that includes pay raises for law enforcement officers and public school teachers if she wins. She also goes all-in on gun control, making it a central focus in her race as she seeks to turn crime into a liability for Kemp.
Abrams and Warnock, an at-risk Democrat running against former Georgia football standout Herschel Walker, have also stressed their support for codifying abortion rights ahead of the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade.
The two Georgia candidates are not relying on Biden to pump up the electorate but instead are hoping their take on divisive issues will be enough to get voters to the polls.
"Abrams and Warnock know they're extremely vulnerable given Biden's low approval ratings," Karen Owen, a University of West Georgia political scientist, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "And they know they need to shift to bread-and-butter kitchen table issues like energy prices."
In recent days, Warnock has even gone out of his way to dodge direct questions about wanting Biden on the campaign trail.
"I know that the pundits are focused on the campaign," he said. "I really am focused on serving the people of Georgia."
The president's underwhelming performance has led to uncomfortable conversations about how much to lean on him as Democrats try to hold on to power. The Senate is currently deadlocked at 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris's tiebreaking vote giving Democrats the majority. In the House, Republicans need to net only five seats in the midterm elections to win back the majority they lost in 2018.
In swing states such as Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire, candidates have resorted to running against Washington as a whole — even though their party controls both chambers of Congress and the White House.
"I'm running for reelection because you deserve a senator who will cut through the gridlock and dysfunction in Washington and deliver real results for your family," Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, who has been in Congress for nearly six years, wrote on her website. "I'll work with anyone — Democrats, Republicans, and independents — to help Nevada's families succeed."
Masto's strategy is born out of necessity, as frustration over soaring gas prices and inflation deepens and confidence in Biden tanks.
A Gallup poll found that the mood of the nation is the worst it has been in any midterm election since 1974, the year the Watergate scandal led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Even though it's normal for a president's party to lose seats in the midterm elections, Democrats could be looking at larger than usual losses unless Biden can turn public opinion around.
Biden has burned through almost all of the political capital he had when he was sworn into office last year. His popularity has taken a nosedive amid his struggles to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, soaring gas prices, and multiple foreign crises. His public approval rating fell for a fourth straight week to 36%, matching its lowest level seen in May, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released Thursday. His overall approval rating has stayed below 50% since August.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who leads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told the Washington Post his organization is spending big to "make sure voters know that Senate Democrats have supported Joe Biden and his inflation-inducing, gas price-raising, border crisis-creating agenda almost 100% of the time."
Biden's popularity problems are threatening to overturn gains in state legislatures.
In Arizona, Democrats have all but given up hope that they will be able to flip the state House, which had been a major target for party strategists.
"We have to be cognizant and realistic about where and how we can win," Chad Campbell, a former state lawmaker and Democratic consultant, told the New York Times. He added that the goal now is to contain the bleeding and look ahead to 2024.
