Dear Dick,

Lucille and I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving; ours was quiet with immediate family. In mid-November, I underwent a heart valve replacement, which ended up being more involved and thus, my recovery has been slower than anticipated. But, I'm doing better, thankfully, and headed in the right direction.

The JillianMac Gallery, who represents Rolland's work in the New Orleans area, currently has a group show this month, including Rolland's paintings and drawings. The space is very large, eclectic and beautifully laid out. You can visit their website:www.jillianmac.com

Recently, 17 of Rolland's earlier paintings were donated by a couple living in our area to the L.S.U. Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, La. The director and curator were most excited to acquire these works and have asked me to give an interview, which will be in the near future.

Mike Rowe's Knobel Whiskey embodies the spirit of the everyman who inspired it

DUNDALK, Maryland — To understand television host Mike Rowe, consider his grandfather.

In the undated photo of Carl Milton Knobel, he is standing in what appears to be his backyard. Dressed in a dapper suit and wool overcoat, he is looking at whoever is holding the camera with affection. Everything about him emotes dignity and grace but also joy and anticipation, as if someone knew this was the moment to capture all of who he was, for posterity's sake.

Knobel was a father of two daughters, the grandfather of five grandsons, and the great-grandfather of four when he passed in 2003 at the age of 91. As a young man, he had been an estimator at the Washington Navy Yard and then ran an electrical contracting business. When he retired as an investigator for the Baltimore County Electrical Administrative Board, county officials declared it Carl Milton Knobel Day in his honor.

He sat in Kenwood Presbyterian Church's pews for 73 years, serving as a deacon, an elder, and, for 26 years, as its Sunday school superintendent. In 1959, the congregation dedicated its then-new school building in his name.

All of us, in some way, try to keep alive the memories of the people who came before us who led remarkable lives just by doing unremarkable things. What mattered was the way they loved and cared for us, what they taught us, the examples of duty and hard work they lived by, and the humility in all the ways they practiced it. Television host, narrator, and champion of the working class Mike Rowe is no exception. Nearly 20 years since his grandfather Carl Knobel died, Rowe keeps Knobel’s memory alive in just about everything he does, from dedicating his Discovery Channel Dirty Jobs show to the man he called Pops to naming his venture into the spirit world (whiskey, that is) after him.

I offer two different scenarios for the market.

The first is consumers are indebting themselves at a fast paste and this will impact corporate earnings and though inflation is receding investors believe the market is still vulnerable to a further correction. The economy needs people to work because there are jobs available in every field. The problem is people, for whatever reason, would prefer not to work. Perhaps they believe the Biden Administration will continue to subsidize slovenliness or the influx of illegals will eventually take the available jobs.

The other scenario is consumers will soon have to repay the debt they are incurring and this will result in a rebalancing of those working and available jobs will be reduced to a more manageable level, productivity will improve and corporate earnings will stabilize. As for the market, there is a growing number of analysts and investment managers who believe the second half will show improvement and the market has mostly discounted the first half of 2023. They also anticipate China will re-open their economy and that will contribute to a world economy in recovery mode.

For the first time, I heard one economist say what I have been saying. The Fed does not have to seek a 2% goal for inflation and would be wiser to accommodate a somewhat higher level of inflation thus, relieving themselves of raising interest rates.

As for myself I see both scenarios as plausible. At the present time the market is trying to assess whether we are going into a recession and if it will be mild or more ominous.

We are probably entering a phase when one should be nibbling at stocks because most everyone is confused and battered. Historically, bear markets create opportunities because they are always succeeded by strong recoveries. This time, a recovery could be somewhat constrained because America is politically divided and indebted as never before.

Time will tell, it always does.

Saudi Arabia sets three conditions to make peace with Israel

There are a lot of hints that a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia is in the works.

While peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia will take time, there are already interesting developments. For one, officials from Saudi Arabia met with the heads of America’s Jewish community. They made it clear that they want peace with Israel.

Interestingly, there were only three conditions:

A reaffirmation of the American-Saudi Arabia Alliance

A restart of American weapons sales to Saudi Arabia comparable to other NATO members

Permission to have a civilian nuclear program

Notice what issue is not one of the conditions. That’s right the “Palestinians.”

NBC has picked up a bad habit of distorting and fabricating stories so that they align with Democrat’s radical, woke narrative.

Their latest ploy? Claiming that President Joe Biden had to choose between Brittney Griner or Paul Whelan.

Andrea Mitchell of NBC, someone who has been reporting news in Washington for more than 50 years, was involved in a published story that contained the line: “the Kremlin gave the White House the choice of either Griner or Whelan — or none,” stating that a senior U.S. official provided this information.

After heads turned at the bizarre claim, NBC offered a correction to the piece.

The article was edited to read, "The Kremlin ultimately gave the White House the choice of Griner or no one after different options were proposed."

The liberal outlet acknowledged their mistake saying “an earlier version of this article misstated the choice the Biden administration was given over hostages. It was to swap for Griner or no one, not a choice between Griner or Whelan."

NBC’s original story conveniently lined up to fit Biden’s narrative.

This is the not first time NBC made a noticeable “error.”

After the then-House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi’s husband was viciously attacked at their San Francisco home, NBC reported that Pelosi opened the door for police and didn’t attempt to escape, and even walked toward his alleged attacker, David DePape.

"We demand the resignation of Sam Brinton, and we implore you to set aside petty politics and appoint only the most qualified and dedicated individuals to influence America's energy sector," the letter read, adding “as an appointed official, Sam Brinton represents both your Department and the United States. It is simply not possible for an individual to represent American values and simultaneously violate the felony laws of the land."
