Today I co-hosted a luncheon for my two most favorite public servants - Spencer Lawton and Meg Heap. Spencer was Chatham County's District Attorney for 28 years and mentored Meg who recently lost her position to a strident opponent. I supported Meg and I think it is tragic that she lost.
I will hit a few highlights of what we discussed, sans direct attribution, and what we could not answer/ resolve.
One unanswered question was how do we get the mass media to function as intended?
It was concluded black voters have become far more sophisticated and it was felt Meg lost not so much because she was white but because her opponent was strident and accusative. Those qualities resonate today and have become favored tactics in the political arena.
One of the guests was optimistic and stated pendulums swing and cited believable reasons for his optimism.
Yours's truly expressed a more pessimistic view and expressed the belief when the pendulum swings back something significant and worthwhile is always lost and society is never the same.
In describing the importance of the District Attorney's role in society Meg's opponent was deemed potentially dangerous because defendants are selected and judges have nothing to do with those who come before them. Meg's opponent has publicly stated her own biases and it is felt the risks she poses relate to what she may not do. In other words, if alleged defendants fit a certain profile there may be no prosecution regardless of the fact that they may have broken various laws.
When a truly competent public servant loses to an unqualified opponent what message is sent to those who may want to serve but, in today's political climes, chooses not to be called a racist and/or suffer other attacks and indignations.
It was felt Trump's impending visit to Georgia carries risks because he is controversial and candidates he supports can be stigmatized. Identity politics is/ can become a powerful weapon.
Meg has no specific future plans though she has been approached by Governor Kemp, as one might expect. What Meg will ultimately do remains to be seen but Chatham County's District Attorney's Office, I fear, is not going to be the same professional one she helped rebuild.
The invitees are all known to each other, are close personal friends and all supported Meg. Some met Spencer for the first time but knew of his pristine reputation. I might add, Spencer is one of the most articulate people I have ever met and is a solid thinker.
We discussed this as well:

Recently in a previous memo I alphabetized a list of events and/or items that I believe 2020 validated and which will
now shape our society going forward. Some fellow memo readers have sent me their's and this I came across and
explains why I post cartoons in most of my memos because humor is a necessary balm that enables mankind to
survive and even thrive. Being Jewish I am a great believer in the therapeutics of humor.

that Barr authorized Durham's continuance and thus, made it difficult for Biden to stop the extended investigation.
