Review of Cahill's 7th and last chapter in: " The Gift of the Jews."
Not every word in the Bible came from God nor should everyone who believes in a worthy God should believe God was guilty of mass carnage and vindictive slaughter.
The Hebrew God went through stages of conscious development and the Bible is the story of the mess and contrariness of human life. It can be read in many ways .
The world is the undeniable recipient of the Jew's miraculous development of ethical monotheism,
the processive world view versus the cyclical worldview. The latter implies there are neither endings nor beginnings.
The Jewish God is one of justice and compassion which undergirds all our Western values. Human effort without this God is doomed to failure. Why? Because without God their is no justice.
At the end of the last chapter, Cahill lists a variety of sources for those willing to expand their knowledge and he entitles them: "Notes and Sources."
