A liberal friend (I actually have many) asked me what I thought he might need
in order to defend his home and family from home invasion.
I suggested a 9mm, a couple of clips, and a box of shells.
A few days later he sent me this picture and asked me how to make it all work.
He voted for Obama -- twice, and Hillary once.

This article rebuts my own comments about the 2d Amendment I posted in previous memo. (See 3 below.)
A very dear friend and fellow memo reader takes issue with me regarding what I would ban under the 2d Amendment:
"Dick,
As you know, my thinking is always in line with yours, but I respectfully disagree today ... I believe you are wrong on several points.
The fact that The Founders "could not interpret how technology might alter weaponry" is completely irrelevant; the principle upon which the Second Amendment was written has not changed. Why restrict the meaning to protecting "one's property etc." As you reminded us, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." ... that includes protection from one's own government, if it ever became necessary, as it did with our Founders! I would not want to try that with my Swiss army knife, or with a single shot weapon, unless of course the Government was restricted from using anything more deadly!
You use the term "automatic weapons" incorrectly. An AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon. If you want to ban them, I violently disagree with you! The majority of ALL guns in this Country are semi-automatic! That would be an impossible task and I don't think you take that position. If you meant you would restrict fully automatic weapons, they are already restricted and subject to close Federal scrutiny. Bumper stocks were invented to get around those restrictions ... even the NRA agrees with doing something to control them.
The biggest common thread among these shootings is mental health. An "hour of psychoanalysis" will not solve the problem, but neither will it cost "billions of dollars" when properly directed. There are many practical reforms that could result from a well designed program, such as preventing some or most patients with mental issues from obtaining firearms.
You hit the nail on the head in saying "the real solution is an entire nation changing its now accepted way of life and character" and I believe that is our only hope ... pounding on one reform at a time, and persisting the same way liberals did in causing the declination to begin with. It will take years, but I can see some chinks opening in the armor ... maybe there is a chance the pendulum can swing back again. If we ever lose that hope, it truly will be over for our Nation! J--"

You may be aware there is a near crisis in being able to find qualified truck drivers. There are almost none left, and many do not want to be away from home on long hauls. It is now at a point that trucking firms are desperate to find drivers and they are modifying routes to no more than 200 miles so the drivers can be home for dinner. Likewise there is a huge shortage of warehouse workers to pick and ship. Several things come out of this. Trucking wages are rising. Relatively unskilled men are able to learn to be drivers giving new opportunities to the less skilled. Self-driving trucks are coming fast for over the road long haul. Warehouses are now robot driven automated buildings. There are few humans doing the work in new facilities which are being designed as automated buildings where driverless trucks will pull up and be unloaded by robots. The whole design of these buildings is changing and there will be less employee parking which means more usable building sq feet. If the warehouse trucking and distribution business does not quickly adopt these changes, the growth of GDP will be negatively impacted as goods will not get delivered on time to meet demand. This is an urgent now problem. Warehouses themselves are beginning to be over built in some markets, but there is a long way to go yet for well located facilities. One of the real drivers coming on now is the new Panama Canal, known as the Third Set Of Locks. It is now open and it is much wider and deeper allowing new massive container ships to go direct from Asia to the east coast of the US. It is changing logistics completely. Los Angeles and Long Beach became over capacity and CA regulations made it impossible to expand properly. San Fran and Seattle are also not able to be expanded to take in the massive increases in trade due to over regulation and costs to operate. The result is east coast ports are expanding rapidly and are business friendly. There is now a massive shift underway to just bring containers to Tampa and up the coast where costs and ease of operation make CA unattractive. This will change how containers are shipped by rail and truck as well as in the ports. This logistics impact on many related things cannot be over stated. The cost to CA of lost opportunity is in the billions thanks to their over regulation and climate orthodoxy. The same is true for Northeast ports. NY Harbor is so badly operated by the Port Authority it is losing major opportunities as well. The NY NJ Port Authority is a disaster and has been for decades. They cannot get out of their own way. The result is southern ports are enjoying major growth. This is a perfect real life example of how regulation kills opportunity and business friendly, nonunion cities are garnering the growth.
Many economists are now forecasting unemployment rates of around 3.25% by later in the year. If achieved it would be a record low and well below full employment. It would mean that if you deduct out those changing jobs, or in a layoff, and just look at truly unemployed, it would be nil. If you can breathe and show up every day sober and not on drugs, you can find a job of some sort. Compare this to 8 years of Democratic policies, and GDP growth of less than 2%. No, this growth is not the result of Obama setting it up for Trump to now have good numbers. It is due to tax reform and deregulation and a true revival of animal spirits that did not exist for 8 years. The optimism is palpable now. Cash is available thanks to tax reform, and not wasting money on lawyers and consultants to abide by stupid regulations. That frees a lot of capital for growth and hiring.
Fracking has nearly made the US energy independent despite the liberals attempt to kill it. It importantly means the US has some of the lowest cost energy in the world while Europe suffers with very high costs because they will not allow fracking, and closed many of the nuke power plants. We see the same in the Northeast US where Democrats will not allow pipelines to be built, and insist on “clean energy”. So this winter there is a major shortage of power which is getting worse. By next year the Northeast, and especially New York and Massachusetts, will not be able to retain companies due to high taxes, high cost and unavailable high cost energy, and excessive regulation. Until Cuomo and CT, and MA get with reality, they are toast. Why would anyone move a plant to NY given the high taxes and energy costs, and anti-business attitudes of government.
The only truly nonpartisan voter poll left is Rasmussen. As we have seen over and over, the polls done by the press are biased and wrong. Rasmussen’s new poll has Trump at approximately 50% favorable in February. You are not likely to hear that on CNN, NBC or ABC. The tax bill is also now in favorable territory. Obama was not scoring as well at this point. Republicans have pulled about even for the November election. I continue to predict the Republicans pick up seats in the Senate, and do not lose control of the House. When the new adjusted withholding tables come out in early March, and even more pay ends up in workers pockets, and unemployment continues to drop, home prices rise, and 401K values continue to increase, the Dems will look more and more stupid for voting no on tax reform and for having no credible platform, and having Muslim, anti-Semitic Keith Ellison as the man helping to run the DNC, the Republicans will win if they turn out to vote. When Nunes issues more reports, and the inspector general at the FBI and DOJ issue their reports, it will turn ugly for Dems.
The rhetoric about the NRA is out of control. Gun control as espoused by the ems is not the issue. I have nothing to do with the NRA, nor do I own a gun, so I am neutral on all this. The shooting at Parkland was all about the system breaking down due to PC rules, stupid mental health restraints on the authorities, and just plain failure on the part of everyone including the sheriff. The NRA had zero to do with it. The FBI is using a contract answering service in W VA as the tip line. It is answered by some locals, and not FBI trained agents. The sheriff has clearly failed to properly train his deputies not to make the same mistakes that led to so many deaths in Columbine where the swat teams waited outside, as in Parkland. The social workers and therapists, and the school were clearly incompetent, and likely driven by wanting to be PC and not lock up the kid who even called the cops about himself. The gun permit should never have been issued if all these people had flagged the kid. It was a massive system and human failure, not the NRA. The answer is to radically change the system to allow AI to search the data bases and to allow the cops top pick up anyone judged at serious risk of doing harm to themselves or others. Social workers and therapists need to be ordered to stop being PC and to move fast to at least let these deranged people be hospitalized until they can be fully evaluated. All of these incidents of expelling, domestic calls by the cops, tips, etc need to go into the gun permit data bank, and screw the privacy nonsense. Dead kids had no such privacy rights nor the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as a result of everyone being PC. What happened to their civil rights to be protected by their government. We need to arm teachers who have combat experience, and are specially trained. and know how to shoot killers. We need hardened schools. You cannot enter a New York office building nor high end apartment building without going through security of at least a doorman checking if you are cleared. You cannot go to a ball game or other major event without a security check point. In New York you cannot enter a school without an armed guard being nearby. Many years ago the armed guard at a upper east side private school shot an intruder dead. That was 30 years ago. It works to have these guys with guns. The students are not bothered at all by it and feel safer. All the idiotic rhetoric by Dems and teachers union leaders about having armed guards and armed teachers is just more of the same liberal thinking that got 17 kids murdered. Gun free zones and more gun rules will not stop killers. None of the shooters in Chicago gangs ever tried to get a gun permit. More young black guys will die in Chicago this year than all the deaths now occurring now in the suburb of Damascus. Just think that over for a few minutes when you want to blame the NRA, or worry about PC rules and ACLU strictures. Good guys with guns who are trained to run into danger and shoot to kill, and not hide behind cars, are what stop bad guys with guns from killing innocent kids.
If you want to really understand what has changed in America- Billy Graham, a truly unique icon in American history has died, and he has been replaced by Facebook, Google, Snapchat, CNN, NBC and Instagram. He has been replaced by Rachel Madow, Pelosi and Rush Limbaugh. An era died, and we are all worse off for it. We have lost our moral compass, and I am not even Christian.

We've heard it all before. Liberals pretend to be originalists on the Second Amendment, claiming that the founders couldn't have fathomed semi-automatic weapons in the age of muskets. By that logic, the internet would be subject to censorship because the first amendment only mentions "freedom of the press". The founders didn't limit liberty so arbitrarily, but still, their claim about modern weaponry is just plain wrong.
Repeating weapons that did not require reloading after single shot were documented to exist in Europe as early as 1490; they were in production just before the American Revolution in England. Because such weapons were constructed by craftsman, the technology to mass produce them affordably did not yet exist, as the components needed to fit together with precision. It cannot be true that the founders didn't know that the Second Amendment would lead to the ownership of such arms.
As a matter of fact, James Madison, author of the Second Amendment, acted while president to develop this technology. According to David Kopel's analysis in the Washington Post, "During Madison’s presidency (1809-17), Secretary of War James Monroe (who would succeed Madison as president), successfully promoted legislation to foster the development of firearms technology. In particular, the federal armories at Springfield, Mass., and Harpers Ferry, Va., were ordered to invent the means of producing firearms with interchangeable parts."
History refutes this argument, which means liberals are arguing without historical facts.

Harvard’s Next President Finds a Teaching Moment Even Before Taking Office
By IRA STOLL, Special to the SunHarvard University had only just announced its next president before he came under attack — not for anything he did, but for who he is.
That is, in the eyes of his critics, at least, a “white male.”
The New York Times greeted the selection with a news article reporting in its second paragraph that, in selecting Lawrence Bacow earlier this month, the search committee had missed “an opportunity for Harvard to choose a leader who would reflect the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements.”
Harvard’s student newspaper, the Crimson, of which I was president 25 years ago, reported that the announcement, “surprised and disappointed some College students who had hoped a person of color would take the University’s top job.”Such intense reaction tells two newsworthy stories: a negative tale about the politics of race and gender on campus and a positive one about America and its Jews.
The Crimson described the incoming president as “the 28th white male to sit in the president’s Massachusetts Hall corner office.” The newspaper quoted a college junior, Sebastian Reyes, who said, “I think the one sort of thing I had in mind for the new president was that it would be a person of color, so it was really disheartening.”Then the Crimson followed up with an op-ed column by Ruben Reyes Jr., who denounced the choice as “uninspiring and frankly a bit disappointing.” He described Mr. Bacow as “the second white, male economist named Lawrence to serve as Harvard’s president.” (Larry Summers, call your office.)
The Crimson columnist complained that Mr. Bacow “does not understand, first-hand, what it means to be reduced to your gender or the color of your skin.”
And there, precisely, is encapsulated the irony of the situation. The vanguard of the anti-racism, anti-sexism movement on campus looks at an individual chosen for a job and can’t see past his skin color or his gender. If Mr. Bacow didn’t “understand, first-hand” what it means to be reduced to gender or skin color before he was chosen for this job, he sure does now, because it appears to be the only thing, or the main thing, that his critics can see about him.Had those critics bothered to look beyond appearances, they might see someone who introduced himself to the university in a YouTube video as the son of two Jewish refugees. His mother was an Auschwitz survivor and his father was an immigrant from Minsk. As the grandson of a Jewish immigrant from Minsk myself, I’ve got experience with this issue. Personally, when the racial record-keepers ask me to check a box, I don’t go with “white,” but put “other” and write in “Jew.”
It’s not that I’m unaware of the privilege of being able to pass, or of the differences and overlaps between categories and constructs of race, religion, culture, and nationalism. I’m also acutely cognizant of the 20th century European history in which whatever my family members were categorized as, “white” wasn’t it. How American Jews — or, for that matter, Italians or Irish — came to be defined as “white” is a fine topic for a Harvard course or a doctoral dissertation. An anthropology professor wrote a book about it in the 1990s, “How Jews Became White Folks and What That Says About Race in America.”
The short story of “what that says” is that discrimination has receded to the point where Jews, in America at least, are no longer a persecuted minority and are instead integrated into the majority culture. Though that isn’t without drawbacks, such as the threats that assimilation can pose to distinctive traditions, it is far preferable to the alternative.
Nor was 20th century discrimination against Jews limited to Europe. The first of the three “white male Larrys” to be president of Harvard, A. Lawrence Lowell, who was in office from 1909 to 1933, proposed a quota to limit Jewish students: “The summer hotel that is ruined by admitting Jews meets its fate . . . because they drive away the Gentiles, and then after the Gentiles have left, they leave also.”
As a Jewish Harvard undergraduate in the 1990s, I thought of Lowell as a white male oppressor. Years later, in researching early Harvard and Massachusetts history for my biography of Samuel Adams, I came to understand that the Puritan ancestors of Adams and Lowell were themselves refugees who had fled war-torn Europe on boats seeking religious liberty. Those Massachusetts Bay colonists were not all that different from my grandfather or Mr. Bacow’s mother.
With some combination of luck, open-mindedness, and exposure to Harvard’s extensive library resources, the students and others upset at Mr. Bacow’s selection may eventually get past their perception of his skin color and gender and find a more nuanced and accurate way to place his family story in the context of the university’s and their own.
Maybe they’ll even see him as an individual rather than as a “white male.” If the new Harvard president can help the critics appreciate that perspective, he’ll be teaching something about world history and perhaps more importantly about examining assumptions. Isn’t that what education is all about?

Soros is beyond smart-he has already won and installed his leftist candidate as DA in Philly, resulting in the immediate firing of seasoned prosecutors. The result is that only crimes Soros declares as such will be prosecuted. The slippery slope here has steepened and been greased.
Soros Buying A Texas DA Seat Undermining immigration enforcement and elevating sanctuary cities is the goal. Matthew Vadum
Posted By Ruth King
Leftist billionaire George Soros has been pouring big money into a Texas district attorney race as part of his effort to install extremist prosecutors across America who will protect lawless so-called sanctuary cities that obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration law.
We already knew that pressure groups funded by Soros are litigating to keep U.S. ports-of-entry wide open to terrorists and other people who hate America. And leftist propaganda shops like the Brennan Center for Justice, which has taken in about $23 million from Soros since 2000, have churned out reports arguing that state judicial systems need to be reshaped to more closely follow the Left’s agenda.
Soros is using his vast fortune in an attempt to radicalize local prosecutors’ offices in part because he wants to block U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from functioning. The self-styled philosopher wants to cripple law enforcement in order to advance the radical abstraction known as social justice that simplistically breaks the world down into race, class, and sex. Radicals claim that American laws and institutions are corrupt and that these systems protect, for example, wealthy, white, native-born, non-disabled males at the expense of everyone else. In this instance, U.S. immigration law is inherently unfair to illegal aliens, or so the reasoning goes.
Soros’s current target is Bexar County, Texas, District Attorney Nico LaHood, Peter Hasson reports in the Daily Caller. LaHood is a Democrat who oppose sanctuary cities and describes himself as “a conservative guy.”
Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, is the fourth most-populous county in Texas. Knocking off LaHood would be a significant step forward for the Soros agenda.
Soros has already blown through around $70,000 supporting LaHood’s primary opponent, Joe Gonzales, by way of Texas Justice & Public Safety, a political action committee or PAC. The sum includes more than $30,000 devoted to mailers attacking LaHood as “bigoted,” “racist,” and “Islamophobic” in both the English and Spanish languages.
LaHood countered by running an ad titled “Your DA’s Office is Not For Sale.”
“We know George Soros is a billionaire who has purchased at least 10 other district attorneys’ offices around the country, not to mention other political positions,” LaHood said in the ad.
LaHood has an unusual background for a prosecutor. He was arrested in 1994 for selling $3,600 worth of a controlled substance – 200 Ecstasy pills – to undercover police. He pled guilty “and was given deferred adjudication, a probated $1,000 fine and ordered to perform 320 hours of community service,” according to the San Antonio Express-News.
But the one-time drug dealer turned his life around, graduated from law school, and began practicing as an attorney. He is now a born-again Christian.
Although leftists like Soros pride themselves on supporting ex-cons and so-called people of color like LaHood, a Latino, the district attorney has committed some unpardonable sins in the eyes of left-wingers.
Exhibit A: As noted above, LaHood believes U.S. immigration law should be enforced and is opposed to sanctuary cities. He was pleased with Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, when he signed a law banning sanctuary jurisdictions in Texas. “I do not support sanctuary cities,” LaHood said. “I understand the spirit of what the governor was trying to do, and I appreciate it.”
Exhibit B: LaHood’s views on Islam, which he calls “a horrifically violent religion,” are utterly reasonable, which is an instant deal-breaker for leftists. “Islam is basically a political system wrapped in a religion,” he said. “This has nothing to do with whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican or independent or anything in between. It has to do with American values and what’s acceptable in our country or not, period.”
“I don’t get into discussions about Muslims because I have some very, very — and I want to emphasize this — very good friends that wear the label of a Muslim,” has said. “But they don’t follow the tenets or the principle of Islam, more importantly Sharia Law, because they’ve been Americanized.” Terrorists “are truly, militantly following what the text tells them to do.”
Exhibit C: he’s not a Trump-hater. He describes himself as “a conservative guy,” and criticizes the president in only the mildest terms. “Trump’s style, he’s not my style,” LaHood said last year to conservative talk radio host “Doc” Owen. “He’s not wrong on a lot of things. He’s wrong in some things. He’s not wrong in everything.”
Soros intervened financially in another Texas district attorney race in 2016, giving an unheard-of $500,000 in PAC money to Kim Ogg, who beat incumbent Republican Devon Anderson to become DA in Harris County, which includes Houston. Ogg promised a “significant culture change,” including greater leniency in marijuana possession cases and making it easier for criminal defendants to make bail.
According to a Daily Signal analysis, in the 2016 election cycle Soros shelled out almost $11 million in 12 DA races. Democrat candidates backed by Soros ended up winning in 10 of those dozen contests. Soros also funded district attorney candidates in Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, and New Mexico.
Soros’s backing helped elect radical leftist Lawrence (Larry) Krasner (D) as Philadelphia DA this past November. In private practice, Krasner had sued police more than 75 times and represented Occupy Philadelphia and Black Lives Matter.
After being sworn in on Jan. 2, Krasner fired 31 prosecutors without explanation on his fourth day in office, Joe Schoffstall reports at the Washington Free Beacon.
A list of those who were purged from the office shows that a number of them came from the homicide division, drug enforcement, and civil asset forfeiture units. The terminations have stalled court cases in the city, where one judge on Monday criticized the office after they asked that a murder trial be postponed due to the assistant attorney general being one of the dozens of people let go by Krasner, according to reports.
Krasner has vowed never to seek the death penalty in any criminal case and to keep Philadelphia a sanctuary city. A segment of his platform titled “Resist the Trump Administration” spelled out his plan to “protect immigrants,” “reject the drug war,” and “stand up to police misconduct.”
Last year Soros gave $1.7 million to the Philadelphia Justice and Public Safety PAC, which was created to support Krasner and listed its address as the Democrat law firm Perkins Coie in the nation’s capital. Perkins Coie was used by Democrats to pay Fusion GPS for its infamous “piss-gate” dossier compiled by Trump-hating rent-a-spy Christopher Steele.
Also last year, a Soros PAC spent $106,000 on behalf of Portsmouth, Virginia Commonwealth Attorney Stephanie Morales (D) without anyone noticing during the campaign.
Black Lives Matter booster and New York Daily News troll Shaun King, a white plagiarist who pretends to be black, hailed Morales on Twitter as, “One of the most righteous, woke prosecutors in the nation, y’all.”
This tells you all you need to know about Morales.
Soros’s plans for sweeping local district attorney races in 2018 was discussed behind closed doors last November at a meeting of the super-rich leftists of the Democracy Alliance at upscale La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California. The Democracy Alliance, which Soros co-founded, is a donors’ collaborative whose members secretly fund left-wing political infrastructure projects, such as think tanks, leadership institutes, and activist groups.
Democracy Alliance president Gara LaMarche, a former Soros lieutenant, wrote in a letter to conference attendees that President Trump’s victory a year ago was “the most cataclysmic election of modern history.”
There was a 55-minute “Talk with George Soros” listed on the official schedule obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, as well as an hour-long discussion titled, “Prosecutor Races — Winning Big in 2018?”
The Left already dominates large swaths of the courts and the legal profession, but that’s not good enough for Soros. He funds efforts to encourage states to fill their respective supreme courts with judges recommended by invariably left-wing lawyer-driven commissions, as John Gizzi wrote for Capital Research Center (my employer) in 2010.
Soros, who turns 88 in August, boasts of giving $32 billion of his own personal fortune to his philanthropy, the Open Society Foundations. Of that total, $18 billion was donated last year, reducing Soros’s net worth to $8 billion. This $18 billion mother-of-all-money-bombs essentially guarantees OSF will remain one of the most important players in left-wing activism long after Soros is gone.
And whatever damage Soros does to law enforcement will long outlive him.
