Star is correct when she writes COVID gave "big government, crush freedom advocates" the opportunity to pounce/launch and they did with masking, control over education, starting fracases involving vaccinations and you know the rest.The radicals and discontent are forever active while the average Joe simply wants to drink his beer, watch TV ,fish, play golf and live out his life as peacefully as possible in an environment creeping towards him with a myriad of threats, demands, disruptions and incursions.
Americans are very slow to react to these threats and this allows those aligned against the vast majority to become disadvantaged.
When our entire societal structure is under attack the consequences can be physically and emotionally draining/overwhelming. We must never allow this to happen but we do and consequently, with each episode, we lose some of our precious freedoms. Consequently, each time we must defend from a more weakened position.
Over time, a thousand individual cuts may be of of little consequence but collectively they can mount and become a true threat as they have. We must be ever vigil because the enemy wants to rid the world of what America stands for because we are a threat. They cannot accomplish their goals as long as America's light shines bright.
This is why we must not give an inch on our God given freedoms because it establishes a dangerous principle and signals a weakness from which we might not recover.
The Putin's, Xi's etc. are forever circling like a hungry vulture searching for food.

Sarah Palin is standing on the back deck of her father’s home in Wasilla, Alaska, spending the day like she usually does: getting her youngest child, Trig, ready for school while checking in with her 84-year-old dad as he adjusts to life without her mom, who passed away suddenly last year.
“Trig goes to public school at a really great special needs program at Wasilla Middle School,” Palin told The Post about her 14-year old-son, who was born with Down syndrome. “We get up and get out to the bus stop by 6:55 in the morning with our flashlights because it is so dark out.”

Iran Rejects US Offers for Tehran to Abandon Avenging Quds Force Chief, Official Says
Iran will not abandon plans to avenge the 2020 US killing of Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani, despite “regular offers” from Washington to lift sanctions and provide other concessions in return, a top Iranian official said on Thursday.
Over the last year, Iran and the United States have engaged in fitful, indirect talks in Vienna to revive a 2015 nuclear deal that then-President Donald Trump left in 2018 and that Iran, in turn, began violating in 2019.
Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions.
While they appeared close to resurrecting the deal in March, talks stalled over last-minute Russian demands and whether Washington might drop Iran‘s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which includes the Quds Force, from its Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) list.
“The enemy keeps sending messages that if we give up on avenging Soleimani, they will give us some concessions or lift some sanctions,” Revolutionary Guards’ Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri said.
“This is pure fantasy. The Supreme Leader has emphasized the need for revenge and the Revolutionary Guards’ top commander has said that revenge is inevitable and that we will choose the time and place for it,” he added.
Asked about the comments, a State Department spokesperson said if Iran wanted sanctions relief beyond the 2015 nuclear deal, it must address US concerns beyond the pact.
While neither Tangsiri nor the US spokesperson specified what they meant, they appeared to be alluding to Tehran’s demand that Washington drop the IRGC from its FTO list.
“If Iran wants sanctions lifting that goes beyond the JCPOA, they will need to address concerns of ours beyond the JCPOA,” the U.S. spokesperson said. “Conversely, if they do not want to use these talks to resolve other bilateral issues beyond the JCPOA, then we are confident that we can very quickly reach an understanding on the JCPOA and begin reimplementing the deal.”
“Iran needs to make a decision,” the spokesperson added.
The Quds Force is the foreign espionage and paramilitary arm of the IRGC that controls its allied militia abroad. The Trump administration put the IRGC on the State Department’s FTO list in 2019, the first time Washington formally labelled another nation’s military a terrorist group.
“Under any return to the JCPOA, the United States would retain and aggressively use our powerful tools to address Iran’s destabilizing activities and its support for terrorism and terrorist proxies, and especially to counter the IRGC,” the State Department spokes person said.

My dear friend and fellow memo reader sent this to me. He was involved with the Bush family for most of his life:
This is a fascinating article about Boris Yeltsin. I traveled with Yeltsin around the USA as his escort on his very first trip here. At that time he was not President of Russia, but he had walked out of the Supreme Soviet and tore up his Communist Party Card. Thus he was the first ever to do so and not be executed or thrown in prison. I have a watch he gave me off of his wrist for rearranging his USA schedule to include Houston on his itinerary. Originally, The US State Department had denied him from going to Houston. He wanted to go there to visit NASA, and back then a Soviet spacecraft was due to dock with an American spacecraft and he wanted to see the NASA museum. When we asked again to take him there it was denied for the second time, so I called VP Quayle's office. You might remember that VP Quayle he was given the space portfolio by President George H. W. Bush. I explained to Quayle's assistant that we were taking Yeltsin around the US and we wanted to include Houston. Two hours later while Yeltsin was giving a speech to the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, I got the call saying we could take Yeltsin to Houston.
When we arrived there just a day before the docking of the two spacecrafts, we asked NASA if they could arrange for Yeltsin to speak to the Soviet cosmonauts. NASA refused so as not to anger President Gorbachev.
To this day, Yeltsin is the most charismatic person I have ever met. Charisma just oozed out of him.
The attached story is so interesting as it includes how the 3 Baltic republics helped tear themselves away from the Soviet Union and thus start the fall of the Soviet Union. Interesting again because of the special role that Vytautas Landsbergis, who was an architect and concert pianist played in making Lithuania one of the driving forces that ended Soviet domination. He was the President of the Lithuanian Parliament when he declared independence from the Soviet Union.and then became Lithuania's first elected Head of State of the re-established independent Lithuania. In 1992 while we were living in Seville, Spain, we had the honor to host a dinner at our home for President Landbergis. He was also also a concert pianist and provided the entertainment that evening for our guests by playing a few classical pieces.

Everyone thought social media technology would enhance our lives, bring the world closer together and thus help more learn more about each other's differences and we would eventually realize how similar we really are save for language differences.
Either we were too optimistic, did not fully comprehend the path technology would take us or whatever. Perhaps a few saw threats to our freedoms but most did not give much thought to the downside because technology has generally worked in our favor and we were always willing to endure some of the negative.
As to social media technology, it now appears, in large part, it simply magnified the worst in human nature. Elon Musk now comes along to lasso Twitter in the hope he can modulate/control the negative effect of manipulation and bias and restore some of the positive virtues.
I wish him luck because, from a purely political view, social media technology has become more a weapon of destruction and discord.
Antipathy towards each other has risen, we are far more divided as many of our freedoms have been impinged.

As I wrote recently it is so easy for the vast majority to let their guard down and allow those who either hate/fear our nation or are in constant need of imposing change even when the outcome proved consistently adverse.
The siren song of change all too often lulls/entraps us into no return, painful occurrences.
