Comment from Pittsburgh police officer: " "I was just doing my job" -Officer Dan Mead.
A true American Hero.
This man very likely saved the lives of my family. He was the first police officer at the scene of the attack and prevented the attacker from going to other synagogues.
He took a bullet for our nation. God should grant him a full and swift recovery.

(I was unable to post picture of officer in hospital bed receiving letters from the school kids. These are the same police officers a former president derided.)

This from a friend and fellow memo reader: "Dick, You are being too kind to liberal Jews who practice "Progressivism" rather than Judaism. FYI the don't give a damn about Israel. B----"

Last night Lynn and I went to an, open to the public, vigil at our Synagogue. There was an overflow crowd and more than five representative of different religious sects spoke. It was a way for Savannah's citizens to express their abhorrence at recent events and reconfirmed my overall belief America remains a decent nation inhabited by basically good people who, on occasion, lose their way.
At some point, the hope is, America will get back on the tracks. I doubt it will be soon because I do not see politicians ready to join hands nor willing to surrender finding fault with everything Trump says and does.
I received several e mails from memo readers challenging my view that Trump should have been welcomed in Pittsburgh. One wanted to know what I was smoking and I told him not hate. The other said he would not attend a meeting with Trump.
I again am reminded of the woman who goes into a butcher shop to buy a chicken. She examines the chicken dutifully by looking up every orifice, smelling the chicken, jabbing the chicken. The butcher yells out: "Lady could you pass that test?"
Trump is no racist though many racists argue he is. Trump has made mistakes but ,unlike Obama, he has not tried to cover the tracks for something he did and then lied about it though he often tortures the truth. Trump has not used government agencies against his detractors to intimidate them, Trump is still learning that being president means he speaks for the entire nation not just those in his own world. Trump has accomplished more in less than two years than most presidents because he is a businessman and not a politician. Finally, Trump has met more resistance and rejection on the part of the opposite party and the mass media than any president in recent history yet, at 70, remains positive and up beat. Quite a testimony to a man with an indefatigable spirit.
Because he is pro America and won over a weaker candidate he is hated and despised. I know Alabama's football team is not liked but the score remains the same when they win.

Also, last night we attended a home cooked meal at a friend's given for former Landing's residents who moved and had just returned from a vacation to China and were heading back home. This was their initial trip to China and the husband came back imbued with the belief China was the pre-imminent emerging nation and would ultimately bury us in an economic sense.
I also received this from another dear friend and fellow memo reader.
What a ship....no wonder 'Made in China' is displacing North American made goods big time. This monster transports goods across the Pacific in just 5 days!!
I, personally, am not willing to come to the same conclusion though, China is a serious threat. We have allowed them to steal technology, they have taken advantage of our generosity, as well as our stupidity, There is not way to calculate the leap this has given them.
Another two will soon be commissioned.
The Chinese have made enormous political and economic progress, have a huge population that creates extraordinary commercial demands for goods and services but has significant catching up to do in terms of being a modern society. Whether they can bridge the gap between Communism and Capitalism remains to be seen.
There is nothing in Shakespeare, Socrates and /or The Bible that says America must remain dominant and on top and I would agree that recent trends would suggest America is faltering. This is why I believe Trump is a first step in the necessary re-adjustment if we are to regain our competitiveness.
Time will tell.

One of my friends is a local city councilperson and was supposed to speak yesterday but was passed over by mistake. this is the speech he would have made: "an challenge of a woman at 4-foot-9. She was born in Argentina to parents who had fled persecution of Jews in Russia; immigrated to the US just in time for the depression that destroyed all the families finances; battled her way through poverty; and, with my father … who also fled persecution in Russia to become one of the first US soldiers to enter the concentration camps because of his interpretive skills and who became the lay leader of our synagogue when it did not have a Rabbi in Valdosta … reared three children that have grown to be leaders in their own right.
The only thing that frightened her was hate. It always struck me as strange anytime someone did something bad that she would say, “I hope that person isn’t Jewish.” Clearly, she feared anything that could give rise to the hatred she had witnessed in the past. I thought we were beyond all that in this country, but it seems to have returned. Not just for Jews. We’ve seen hatred of Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, etc. And it’s not just religions being targeted: races, politicians, immigrants, those with different sexual orientations and even football fans.
We’ve become mean. You wouldn’t believe some of the correspondence I receive as a member of city council. The vitriol is amazing. Facebook gives everyone an anonymous voice to attack anyone and everyone the writer disagrees with and provides an ample audience of approver's that can lead the writer to believe the entire world agrees with them.
The answer is not the politicians: City Council – and there were three members present – doesn’t have the power; the state legislature – and Jesse Petrea was present – doesn’t either; even Congress – and Buddy Carter was there – is powerless. The answer likes in us, you and me and everyone else who claims to want to end this nightmare. We are the ones who have to stand up to the hatred we see every day. We have to tell those who spew such vitriol that they have a right to disagree but no right to attack (neither physically nor verbally.) Because to not do so gives them the perception of license to continue. And that perception of license too often gives them the perceived right to act. And the actions kill people. Innocent people. People who are doing no more than worshiping, watching a concert, or sightseeing in a new city.
Thanks again, J-----"
