The 181st Day of War in Israel
By Sherwin Pomerantz
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on Wednesday ruled out a compromise with Israel for a hostage deal, doubling down on the terror group’s demands which Israel has already ruled out. Speaking in a televised address marking Al-Quds Day, Ismail Haniyeh, chairman of the Hamas politburo in exile in Qatar, said the terror group would not agree to a hostage deal without the total withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the full return of Gazans to all portions of the Strip, an end to the security blockade of Gaza, expanded aid permitted into the coastal enclave, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
“We are committed to our demands: the permanent ceasefire, comprehensive and complete withdrawal of the enemy out of the Gaza Strip, the return of all displaced people to their homes, allowing all aid needed for our people in Gaza, rebuilding the Strip, lifting the blockade and achieving an honorable prisoner exchange deal,” Haniyeh said. The terror chief accused Israel of continuing to “evade, resist” responding to Hamas’ demands.
Israel has offered a six-week truce and the release of hundreds of jailed terrorists, including a number of high-profile terrorists convicted of major offenses, in exchange for the release of approximately 40 Israeli captives held hostage in Gaza since October 7th. There are a total of 134 Israeli hostages still in Gaza, though as many as half may no longer be alive, according to an Israeli official who spoke with Ha’aretz. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly ruled out a permanent ceasefire and vowed to carried out the IDF’s much-anticipated ground operation in Rafah, the last remaining Hamas stronghold in the Gaza Strip.
It is, of course, very strange that no one in the western world is “outraged” over the intransigence of Hamas, the organization that caused this war in the first place. Prime Minister Netanyahu was correct when he described the demands of Hamas as “delusional.” The unmitigated gall of the defeated partner to the war to now demand that everything must go back to where it was on October 6th in order for the war to stop and that the responsibility for making that happen is on the shoulders of Israel in cooperation with a host of other nations is simply madness.
Israel should go to the polls in September, National Unity leader and War Cabinet Minister-without-Portfolio Benny Gantz said at a press conference in Jerusalem on Wednesday, marking the first time that he has called for early elections since joining the wartime government six months ago.
“Setting such a date will allow us to continue the military effort while signaling to the citizens of Israel that we will soon renew their trust in us,” he said in the speech, citing the need to “maintain unity.” Gantz claimed that he discussed the matter with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and plans to “continue dialogue on the subject.”
Gantz and party colleague Gadi Eizenkot, both former Israel Defense Forces chiefs of staff, joined the Netanyahu-led government from the opposition and became members of the War Cabinet following Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre of some 1,200 people in the northwestern Negev.
In an address to the nation on Sunday, Netanyahu had already rejected the suggestion that elections be held during the war, saying it would paralyze hostage negotiations and prevent the defeat of Hamas. “The first who would welcome this is Hamas, and that says everything,” he said. “I’m committed to bringing everyone back, all of our men and women, soldiers, civilians—I will not leave anyone behind.”
Gantz issued his call following large anti-government protests in Jerusalem on Tuesday in which the crowd called to “burn down the country” and tried to storm Netanyahu’s official residence. Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) chief Ronen Bar issued a rare warning Wednesday morning, describing the chaos as a “beyond acceptable” protest. “There is a clear line between legitimate and illegal protest. This worrying trend could lead to dangerous places,” said Bar.
On the economic front. Turkey has been blocking exports to Israel recently, Hebrew-language business news site Globes reported on Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the matter. The government in Ankara has delayed or not approved shipments since March 12, according to agencies working with Israeli importers, and there is no timetable for when the obstructions will end. In addition, Globes reported that it has not been possible to pay export duties for such deliveries, with the Turkish website providing an error message only for Israel-bound exports. Ships have thus been stalled in port as shipping companies wait for a resolution to the issue. This is the first time in recent memory that diplomatic relations between the two countries have affected the business sector as well.
The IDF halted leave for all combat units on Thursday, it said in a statement, amid concerns of possible escalation after the killing of Iranian generals in Damascus this week that drew threats of retaliation. "In accordance with the situational assessment, leave will be temporarily paused for all IDF combat units. The IDF is at war, and the deployment of forces is under continuous assessment according to requirements," the military said in a statement.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Wednesday urged Israel to take concrete steps to protect aid workers and Palestinian civilians in Gaza "after repeated coordination failures" when he spoke with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday, the Pentagon said. The call for steps following the accidental killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers in Gaza this week.
Austin also urged Gallant to conduct "a swift and transparent" investigation, to share the conclusions publicly, and to hold those responsible to account, the Pentagon said. US President Biden is also scheduled to speak with Prime Minister Netanyahu later today, the first time they will have spoken since March 18th.

My Liberal Friends and A Rabbi I Dearly Love But Believe He Is Politically Looney.
I have many liberal friends. I can even have a reasonable conversation with some knowing they cannot change their mind nor will I change mine. They think I am equally stubborn and maybe I am. However, the world they have created for me is not the one I was born into nor am I willing to forsake. That world may no longer exist and be beyond redemption.
I find that very sad because my birth world was one which changed for the better because it needed to, could and did.
My birth world was capable of looking inward and admitting America was not perfect but also we respected the fact our Founding Fathers gave us a document unlike any devised by man which allowed for our betterment if we were willing to put forth the effort.
We have changed in so many vast ways. I fear we have backed ourselves into a corner from which we cannot escape. Why? Because we traded what we had, which worked, for that which could be our downfall since Socialism has never worked. Read Hayek's: "Road To Serfdom" if you disagree.
We allowed Neo-Marxists to shove capitalism aside. Not because capitalism was necessarily failing but because progressives awake every morning unhappy. They seek perfection and believe they have all the answers.
Lamentably, we allowed Neo-Marxists to infiltrate every facet of our society and now what have we accomplished? Education is failing. Our economy has been impacted by inflation. We returned to becoming energy dependent and we allowed our military to decline. Our industrial base, which spawned the world's greatest middle classes disappeared and polls suggest we have become a glum dispirited people.
Consequently, I believe America has left the tracks, is no longer moored, while forsaking what has worked well for nearly 250 years. Frankly I believe we are both financially and morally bankrupt and we are on the cusp of having our debt explode.
America's foreign policy is also on shaky grounds. We are no longer respected. We are being bested by serious adversaries militarily and often commercially. NATO is confused by the challenges of a fascist Russian oligarch named Putin and a two bit dictator in Iran because Obama chose to end run a feckless Senate which allowed him to do so because Senators lacked courage to challenge a fraud who sought to transform America and did so, in fact.
I am currently engaged in an e mail battle with a Rabbi I truly love but always thought was, politically speaking, a bit looney.
He is a fellow memo reader (dick-meom.blogspot.com) and sent the following, and of course I rose to the challenge and responded, as always will. Then he responded a second time and I let him have the other barrel.
His initial e mail:
"To Me:"
It’s amazing how differently we see the world. Netanyahu is a disaster. He has blocked any peace with Palestinians.
The economy is doing well.
The Republicans have served as obstacles for our good foreign policy and any policy regarding the border.
But they are loyal to the Trump cult.
L’Shalom,
R-----"
My response:
"As for the Palestinians. They have rejected every opportunity to live peacefully. Every time they have been given the opportunity to have peace, apparently, they would rather engage in Intifadas and kill Israelis. They continue to train their children to hate Israel and it's people. They chose to have Hamas govern them after Israel returned Gaza and now we just had the unprovoked 10/7 massacre and before that incessant Hamas rocket attacks.
Golda said Palestinians could have peace any time they wanted if they loved their children as Israelis love theirs'.
There is a cartoon depicting Palestinian children dressed in military uniforms parading with weapons and the caption reads: "If the Palestinians wanted peace, there would be peace." Immediately below is a second cartoon depicting an IAF fighter surrounded by bombs stating: "If Israel wanted war, the Palestinians wouldn't exist."
Logically, how do you make peace with those who want to wipe you off the map? Even Biden understands this but he seeks re-election so he believes appeasing radical Democrats is an imperative.
Arabs and Muslims number in the billions, live in many nations and Israel is a tiny nation and the sole one Jewish nation.
What have the Arabs and Muslims done to make the world a better place? They certainly have learned to perfect Islamist Terrorism, how to kill sleeping Marines, American sailors on a docked vessel, chop up a reporter and fly planes into buildings while depriving women basic human rights and educations. .
They even reject their own brothers (Palestinians) because wherever they go they cause
problems.
Read the history of Jordan. Hezbollah currently uses Jordan as a pass through for Iranian supplied weapons just as Hamas used Egypt's Philadelphia Corridor to do the same so their Iranian weapons can be hidden under Palestinian Hospitals etc. Do you really want Iran to go nuclear? Biden and Obama do.
Now let's turn to the GOP and your comment about the Trump cult..
I assume you favor Biden's domestic and foreign policies that allow America to be swamped with illegals, dope peddlers, sex traffickers and gangs who think nothing about killing cops etc.
I assume you prefer Biden be allowed to spend tax payer money to finance his every want, which invariably fail (War on Poverty, Food Stamps, Public Housing, Build It Back Better.) which blithely morphs into a Biden need. Liberals always need more money to better their insane policies. Democrats are financial nymphomaniacs. Not that any politician is trustworthy.
At least the GOP is trying to hold Biden's feet to the fire but lack political leverage .
You must truly hate this country and your children if you hate Trump and love the corrupt Biden.
You seem obsessed. So yes, we are amazingly far apart and I am proud that you recognize this fact. Me"
His second response:
I see what you are saying. There is some truth to that. Since the Palestinians and the Israelis wanted war tens of thousands of Palestinians are dead and Israel is a pariah state.
You thrive on propaganda.
L’Shalom,
R----
+++
My second response:
Seeing it and comprehending are entirely different. Palestinians got what they deserved because they allowed Hamas to build tunnels under their schools, hospitals and cheered when Hamas took hostages etc. I have nothing but contempt for them and all Islamist Terrorists.. Once again, what's with Israel wanted a war?
I previously posed a lot of questions which you either avoided ,because you had no answers, or because you are unable to respond since you seemingly avoid truths.
If you are still teaching children are you showing them pictures of America's borders, NY police being beaten, telling them they could be kidnapped and made to work in a sex traffic entity controlled by Mexicans or die from fentanyl all because our President does not care about them since they are not his grandchildren and he wants America to embrace Socialism and when they go to college their professors are likely to be neo-Marxists.?
Have you showed them pictures of Israeli babies being beheaded or burned alive all because loving Palestinians and Hamas Islamist Terrorists hate them? If not why not.? They need to know about the world liberals want them to live in and prepare them for CRT and Black Lives Matter nonsense and teach them the Democrat Party is full of anti-Semites and the best way to be attacked on a campus, should they enroll in a liberal Ivy League University. The best place to be intimidated and spit on is on the campus of a California university and/or college. .
And the best lesson of all is if Jewish students express themselves or wear some jewelry that identifies them as being Jewish, they will be attacked etc. In class they need to become parrots' They run the risk of being a racist if they do not allow themselves to be hated because they are white.
Furthermore, they should never read the WSJ in public or, God forbid, listen to FOX, only MSNBC and CNN. Finally, if they get a chance to vote you are there to tell them all about Obama and Trump and how they need to hate Bibi.
Time will invariably tell. So far you have been mostly wrong about most everything. Biden is corrupt. The Oslo Accords were a disaster. Our economy has been a disaster under Biden as has most every domestic and foreign policy initiative and you keep obsessing over Trump.
Stay well Happy Pesach. Me

Third e mail response from my politically looney Rabbi friend:

Hi Dick,
Here are specific reasons I support Biden. Even though I’d prefer if the Democratic Party chose a different candidate at the Democratic convention because I think he is too old to run an aggressive campaign against this megalomaniac fascist populist.
He has restored our standing in the world, specifically with NATO and did so in time to take a strong stand against Putin and for the integrity of a country’s sovereign borders. Of course, the Republican Party has diminished this fundamental principle by putting their head in the sand of empty rhetoric.
His economic policies helped us avoid a recession while keeping the economy humming along putting people to work. The huge investments he made early in his term in America are just beginning to pay off.
He stands for values for which I support — respecting the dignity of all people, reproductive rights, LGBT. He doesn’t put crazy originalists on the Supreme Court who shove a right wing agenda down our throats in the name or neutrality.
He supports environmental policies and technologies that will prepare us for the future. Unlike Trump who wants to take us backwards to a past that exists in fantasyland.
He wants to solve the problem at the border in a fair way.
L’Shalom,

Anti-Israel ‘Squad’ Rep. Jamaal Bowman trails rival George Latimer by 17 points
By Carl Campanile
Far-left “Squad” Rep. Jamaal Bowman is in deep trouble in his bid for a third term in the House of Representatives.
In a shocking new poll obtained exclusively by The Post Wednesday, Westchester County Executive George Latimer leads Bowman 52% to 35% among Democratic primary voters in the 16th Congressional District, which takes in southern Westchester County and parts of the northeast Bronx.
Among Democrats who voted in at least three of the last four primaries, Latimer’s lead grows to 21 percentage points — 56% to 35%, according to the survey conducted by veteran Democratic pollster Mark Mellman for the pro-Latimer Democratic Majority for Israel.
Among Democrats who say they know both Latimer and Bowman — 76% of the primary electorate– Latimer’s lead expands even further to 26 points (60% to 34%).
A major problem for Bowman is that Latimer has a far better image among voters than the incumbent, who has been damaged by his self-inflicted actions and rhetoric.
The job performance of Latimer, 70, who has held various offices in Westchester since the late 1980s, is viewed positively by 68% of Democrats in the district while only 18% view him negatively.
In comparison, only 36% of respondents had a positive view of Bowman’s work in Congress while 55% have a negative view.
“Latimer does 32 points better on the positive side, while Bowman’s negatives are a massive 37 points higher than Latimer’s,” Mellman said.
“Very few unindicted elected officials receive such strongly negative ratings from their co-partisans.”
Boman, 48, pleaded guilty last year to one misdemeanor count of falsely pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building to delay a vote to avert a partial government shutdown.
Latimer is leading Bowman 52% to 35% among Democratic primary voters in New York's 16th Congressional District.3

A resurfaced video from November also showed the congressman calling Israel an “apartheid” state while angrily claiming reports of rapes and child murders during Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack against Israel were a “lie.”
He also defended putting convicted cop killer and fugitive Joanne Chesimard in the Bronx Cornerstone Academy for Social Action’s “hall of honor” while he was principal there before his election to the House.
The poll also finds that more than six in 10 Democratic primary voters in the 16th District want the US to support Israel in the ongoing Middle East war, while a majority (59%) approve of President Biden’s handling of the crisis.
“The data are clear: With a robust campaign, the well-known and highly regarded Latimer is in a strong position to unseat the now unpopular Bowman,” Mellman said.
The Bowman camp dismissed the poll as “junk” in response to the dire numbers.
“Mark Mellman not only had incorrect polls on this race in 2020, the candidate Mellman supported had to tell him to stop airing racist ads that darkened Rep. Bowman’s face,” campaign spokesman Bill Neidhardt told The Post. “He doesn’t have an ounce of credibility here, and his junk numbers back that up.”
A recent poll taken by the left-wing Working Families Party claimed two-thirds of Democrats in NY-16 support a cease-fire in Gaza, in sync with Bowman’s stance.
Bowman and Latimer will square off in the primary June 25.
Republican candidate Chris Wright is also running for the seat in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.

HOOVER INSTITUTE ANALYSIS
Welcome to the Hoover Institution’s briefing on national security. In this briefing, we are looking at understanding the triple threats faced in the Middle East, Europe, and the Pacific; the economic and military importance of rare earth minerals; the current usage of “intrawar deterrence”; defense budget woes; the problems with a Palestinian state; global finance and “weaponizing interdependence”; and the Monroe Doctrine and our borders. Finally, we highlight Russian activist Vladimir Bukovsky’s papers from the Hoover Library & Archives.
FEATURED ANALYSIS
A Trifecta of Threats
In their essay, Hoover senior fellow H.R. McMaster and his coauthor Bradley Bowman highlight the linkage between threats in the Middle East, Europe, and the Pacific. The authors state that “overlooking those connections results in missed opportunities to counter aggression and prevent violence from spreading.” Beijing, Moscow, Tehran, and Pyongyang are building partnerships and assisting each other militarily and monetarily. China supplies Russia with weapons for its fight against Ukraine, and the two have expanded their joint military exercises; Tehran and Beijing cooperate through Chinese investments for Iran and oil on the cheap for China; North Korea provides bullets and missiles for conventional and advanced military technology from Russia. As McMaster and Bowman caution, “Americans should realize that our adversaries appreciate the value of partners, and we should too. America's allies and partners are grand strategic assets to be strengthened and nurtured—not burdens to be jettisoned.” Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan are “wise investments” and America’s actions in support of Ukraine and Israel “could have decisive implications for war and peace in the Pacific.”
More Priceless than the Hope Diamond
The recent discovery of 2.34 billion metric tons of rare earth materials in Wyoming is a game changer. As Hoover distinguished research fellow Michael Auslin argues, “This find … will give the US an unparalleled economic and geopolitical edge against China and Russia,” but only if the opportunity is seized on and properly and cleanly managed. As a cautionary tale, Auslin points to the Biden administration policies that have forced the United States from its spot as the world’s largest oil producer and fourth largest in coal production—all processed in a way that is “far cleaner and environmentally safe than China or India.” The same can be done for rare-earth mining as the knowledge is there. “Rare earths are fundamental to advanced economic manufacturing … and are also critical in all military technologies.” As Auslin exhorts, the US must press its “natural advantages.”
Mind Games
As Putin returns to rattling the nuclear saber in his pronouncements about the war in Ukraine, it is important to understand the use of this tactic, argues Hoover research fellow Rose Gottemoeller. This burst of threatening rhetoric has two aims: to send a message to Republicans on the fence over aid to Ukraine and to highlight the contrast to earlier, false alarms that nuclear attacks from Russia could be imminent. Gottemoeller describes such chatter as “intrawar deterrence.” Military, diplomatic, and media channels have all been used in this “mysterious mind game.” The author posits that in many ways it has been used by all sides to prevent nuclear escalation, adding, "We need to keep it that way.”
Money Well Spent
Hoover senior fellow Michael Boskin and coauthor Kiran Sridhar argue that Biden’s 2025 defense budget is woefully inadequate. “While America’s military remains the strongest and most capable in the world, our advantage over potential adversaries has been shrinking rapidly. We must do better if we are to deter our enemies.” They write that Biden has focused more on sanctions than on advancing military capabilities and propose that $100 billion or more per year is needed to build up the navy, the army, missiles, fighters, bombers, and capabilities in cyber and space, to name a few. Reforms are also needed to make the Pentagon more effective. The authors write that while there is cause for optimism with regard to defense spending, “as Reagan showed, only a determined president can persuade a war-weary public and wary Congress to support the sustained investment in national security that is the foundation of freedom, peace and prosperity.”
Change of Direction
Hoover senior fellow Russell Berman turns the Palestinian question on its head and argues that the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel not only poses an existential threat to its neighbors but erodes American security. In emphasizing that the Biden administration’s ultimate objective is the Arab-American vote in Michigan, he carefully describes the consequences of such an outcome: an entity that would soon be governed by Hamas, that could threaten by its “democratic example” the foundations of the Jordanian monarchy, and that would exhibit to the world the fickleness of American fidelity to allies. “For the US, the Palestinian question should be foremost about the effectiveness of American power in the region … and credibility throughout the world.”
Sticky Fingers
Hoover visiting fellow Christopher Ford details the strategy behind “weaponizing interdependence”—through control of networks of global finance—to encourage US policymakers in the use of this tool as well as to build awareness of China’s facility with it. With the work of Henry Farrell and Abraham Newman as a point of reference, Ford argues for the use of economics as an instrument of statecraft in controlling the networks to which large parts of the globe are connected. The dollar-based financial structure is the most immediately manipulated by Washington and therefore most effective. Following our withdrawal from the JCPOA and the imposition of crippling sanctions, Iran tried and failed to establish a non-dollar-based trade network with Europe. Ford argues for similar “chokepoint” effects in slowing Beijing’s acquisition of high-technology items. As Ford states, “Our leaders can’t be good stewards of our economic or our national security interests if they don’t understand the dynamics and challenge related to the weaponization of economic interdependence.”

Aliens Voting We’ve seen the invasion of our border. Are we going to stop the invasion of our voter rolls? by J. Christian Adams
Posted By Ruth King
https://www.frontpagemag.com/aliens-are-voting/
The southern border crisis has reached new heights under President Biden. Now, viral footage shows migrants rushing the National Guard and cutting down border fencing. The data backs up the images Americans are seeing on TV. Arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico have reached an all-time high.
I could just as easily be describing our border in 2015 or even a decade before. Some of these foreigners will get drivers licenses and, therefore mistakenly get added to American voter rolls. We have researched this issue for years, and there is hard data to back it up.
We already have government records from states across the country that reveal aliens have been registering and voting in American elections. Yes, you read that right: foreigners are casting ballots in American elections. It is not a myth or Bigfoot. It is happening.
The number one source for alien registration is the DMV registration system. The overwhelming majority of foreigners who end up registered to vote come through the DMV. The second most prevalent is student visas. Illegal border crossers comprise a smaller percentage of aliens to get registered. Data support these conclusions.
For over a decade, the Public Interest Legal Foundation has been harvesting records from election offices in Texas, California, North Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and many more states that reveal the extent of the problem of aliens getting registered to vote and why it is happening.
The National Voter Registration Act, more commonly known as Motor Voter, is the federal law that requires states to offer voter registration at local drivers license agencies.
As aliens go to get drivers licenses, they will be asked if they would like to register to vote. If they say yes, all that they need to do is fill out the voter registration form and check the box “yes” I am a United States citizen.
After the form is filled out, election officials are required to register the individual to vote in federal elections. States are not allowed to ask for citizenship verification such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization documents. Only an honor system prevents aliens from registering to vote.
The process can be as simple as an alien checking the wrong box or signing the wrong form handed to them by a state employee – sometimes in a different language.
Sometimes aliens get registered because of mistakes by election officials. For instance, Pennsylvania admitted that due to what election officials referred to as “glitch” they had been accidentally registering aliens to vote for two decades. They have been fighting for over five years to conceal details including the number of aliens the Commonwealth registered to vote by mistake.
Additionally, some of the voter registration forms disclosed to the Public Interest Legal Foundation show that aliens have marked “no” I am not a U.S. citizen and were still registered to vote by election officials. These types of errors should never happen.
What can be done about aliens registering to vote?
Unfortunately, as evidenced by a U.S. Senate hearing earlier this month, the Left has no problem with aliens voting. Not a single Democrat invited witness agreed that only citizens should vote in federal elections.
Congress can solve the problem by allowing states to validate citizenship effectively. This could be as easy as providing a passport, birth certificate, or other evidence of being an American. Another easy fix is for Congress to add citizenship to Motor Voter’s reasonable list maintenance requirements for states. Motor Voter does not put the same obligation for states to keep voter rolls free from foreigners as it does from deceased individuals.
With a record number of aliens entering the country, we must take action to ensure they are not registering and voting this November.
We’ve seen the invasion at the southern border. We have to stop the invasion of our voter rolls.
J. Christian Adams is a current commissioner on the United States Commission for Civil Rights, a former Justice Department Voting Section attorney and the President of the Public Interest Legal Foundation.
