As Ronald Reagan was wrapping up his successful 1980 campaign for president, he gave a speech offering an expansive and idealistic view of America’s role in the world. “Let it also be clear that we do not shirk history’s call, that America is not turned inward but outward toward others…still willing to stand by those who are persecuted or alone.”
Today, as his Republican successors battle for their party’s presidential nomination, they offer a much more limited view of America’s world role. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis initially called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a mere “territorial dispute” and in an October speech declared: “We have seen the limits and indeed futility of trying to impose democracies on foreign cultures.” The leading Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, pledged in December that in a new Trump administration, “We will drive out the globalists.”
As DeSantis, Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley move on from the Iowa caucuses, they are fighting to lead a Republican party whose policy preferences have changed dramatically in just the last few years. From trade and immigration to entitlements and the government’s role in the economy, today’s GOP stands in a strikingly different place compared with the party led by Ronald Reagan, either President Bush or presidential nominees Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Shifting circumstances—in America, the economy and the world—account for some of this, but so does the makeup of the party itself, far more populated with rural and less-educated voters than in the past. In Wall Street Journal and NBC News polling, the share of the party held by white voters with a college education dropped from 40% to 25% over the last decade or so—-still a significant faction but less influential. The current rank and file has more populist instincts, less trust in economic globalization and different expectations of their government.
On some fronts, Republicans are unchanged. They remain the party of lowering taxes, reducing regulation and limiting abortion rights, and rally behind the appointment of conservative judges. Still, on a broad array of issues, the party is redefining itself. Tony Fabrizio, the chief pollster for Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, says this shift transcends the choice of a candidate. “Writ large this represents a much broader change,” he says. “It’s almost as seminal as the Reagan-Bush fight of 1980,” when the GOP moved from a moderate mainstream to a much more conservative one.
Trump, who won the Iowa caucuses by some 30 percentage points, best personifies these changes with his “America First” agenda, while Haley hews most closely to more traditional, Reagan-style conservatism. In any case, though, the movement of the party’s center of gravity is unmistakable—and best illustrated by comparing the words of past Republican presidents and candidates to those of today’s candidates, issue by issue.
TRADE
“On world trade, there are some substantial inequities, but the answer is not to close American markets,” Reagan said while in the White House. His Republican successor, George H.W. Bush, said during his 1992 presidential campaign: “The key to America’s growth, expansion and innovation has always been our openness to trade, investment, ideas and people.” By contrast, when Trump was asked in an August interview with Fox Business Network whether he would impose tariffs on imports, he replied: “I think we should have a ring around the collar” of the American economy, saying he would impose a 10% tariff on every item a company “dumps” into the U.S. “The tariffs are great,” he summarized.
IMMIGRATION
“I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though some time back they may have entered illegally,” Reagan said while president. And in his farewell address in 1989, he repeated his oft-stated vision of America as a “shining city on a hill” for the rest of the world: “And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get there.”
Fast forward to this campaign, and in the first Republican debate of 2024, DeSantis said: “The number of people that will be amnestied when I’m president is zero. We cannot do an amnesty in this country.” Haley then added: “You have to deport them.” Trump, meanwhile, has declared that immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of the country.
BIG BUSINESS
The Republican party traditionally has been friendly to big business, and provided a comfortable home to its leaders. Shortly after he was inaugurated in 2001, George W. Bush spoke to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and lauded “the folks who really help our economy grow, the entrepreneurs, the business folks of America, the employers, the risk takers.” When Mitt Romney was running successfully for the 2012 Republican nomination, he asserted at one point in Iowa: “Corporations are people.”
Today’s GOP candidates, by contrast, frequently excoriate big business as just another “elite” institution that often conspires against everyday Americans’ economic needs and cultural preferences. DeSantis has made a point of pride out of his long and public fight with a big corporation in his home state, the Disney Co., over its policies on social issues. In an op-ed for this newspaper, DeSantis decried “old-guard corporate Republicanism” and asserted: “Policies that benefit American corporations don’t necessarily serve the interests of America’s people and economy.”
ENTITLEMENTS
When George W. Bush was running for president in 2000, he shocked the political world, and unsettled some of his advisers, by proposing a partial and voluntary privatization of Social Security to preserve its financial standing. After he won re-election in 2004, he tried to advance the idea: “As we fix Social Security, we also have the responsibility to make the system a better deal for younger workers. And the best way to reach that goal is through voluntary personal retirement accounts.”
Today’s Republican candidates don’t want to go there, despite mounting signs of long-term financial problems for both Medicare and Social Security. Trump declared flatly in early 2023: “Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security.” And he bashed DeSantis as a “wheelchair off the cliff kind of guy” for once backing congressional proposals for changes in Medicare.
OPTIMISM
Perhaps the most noteworthy change among Republican leaders isn’t about an issue but about outlook. Reagan often articulated that vision of America as a shining city, and said he was like an optimistic boy who could see a barn full of manure and think only that there must be a pony inside it somewhere. But it wasn’t only Reagan. Bob Dole accepted the 1996 Republican nomination with a speech proclaiming that he was the “most optimistic man in America.”
One Republican, Sen. Tim Scott, sought his party’s 2024 presidential nomination by using a sunny, upbeat message, saying he was the candidate of “freedom and hope and opportunity,” and brandishing his personal story of a Black man raised by a single mother as a sign of hope. He lasted only until November, when he dropped out.
That Reagan confidence in positive change over time has been overtaken by a much angrier view, which sees threats to the traditional American way of life, highlights grievances and offers a foreboding sense that America might not persevere. “We’re a nation whose economy is collapsing into a cesspool of ruin,” Trump declared last month. “We have become a drug infested, crime-ridden nation, which is incapable of solving the simplest of problems.”
And when Trump said that “radical-left thugs that live like vermin” in the U.S. need to be rooted out, those dark words didn’t hurt him. Indeed, the Iowa poll found that four in 10 of this week’s likely caucus-goers said the statement made them more likely to vote for him.

President Joe Biden acknowledged on Friday that the southern border is not secure, undercutting years of lies by his administration and spin by the news media.
During Biden's three years in office, the United States has repeatedly set new record highs for illegal border crossings, including by migrants on the FBI's terrorist watch list, and drug smuggling from Mexico. Still, Biden's aides have insisted the border is "closed," "not open," and totally "secure."
When Republicans have criticized Biden for failing to address the reality at the border, news outlets have played defense for the president and his White House.

While usage of the phrase "open border" has become more popular, with both Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Senator Ted Cruz invoking the term when offering critiques of the administration, those who study the situation say their usage of the term is incorrect.
On the one hand, the RNC wants people to believe President Joe Biden has adopted an open-border policy. On the other hand, the RNC also pointed to illegal drugs stopped at the southern border thanks to the Biden administration’s border-security measures. …

While right-wing media's "open borders" messaging has proven salient for stateside viewers, there's also reason to believe that it's impacting perceptions of the border abroad. …
Just how this misinformation is reaching migrants is not entirely clear
Why it matters: Immigration has been one of President Biden's biggest logistical and political challenges. Friday's court ruling and the new data are signs of a breakthrough for Biden—even as Republicans in Congress plot to impeach him over his border policies. …
Between the lines: An expected surge of migrants after Title 42 ended hasn't materialized, as Biden's limits on asylum have kicked in. Illegal border crossings actually dipped last month despite the surge in early May, according to new Department of Homeland Security data.
:By using the term "open border," conservatives—including Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who is seeking the role of House speaker—are suggesting that anyone can get into the U.S. without much hassle. But the reality is that the southern border is more fortified than it's ever been.
When all else has failed, the media have resorted to calling Republicans racist.
A century-old racist theory reentered the political discourse around immigration and has become commonplace on the campaign trail as Republicans hope to retake control of Congress in November.
Republican leaders are increasingly framing the situation as an "invasion." Immigrant advocates say the word has a long history in white nationalist circles, and warn that such extreme rhetoric could provoke more violence against immigrants.
Historians and political analysts warned that much of the heated language on immigration plays into far right and sometimes explicitly racist tropes that fuel fear with the potential for violence.
Asked by a reporter at the White House on Friday whether the border is secure, Biden said, "No, it's not. I haven't believed that for the last 10 years, and I've said it for the last 10 years."

Israel’s 110th Day of War

Day 110 of the war in Israel and there does seem to be some movement on the issue of freeing the 130+ hostages still being held by Hamas in Gaza. Israel’s offer on Monday of a two month cease fire with the return of the hostages, the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and safe passage out of Gaza for the Hamas leadership was rejected by Hamas.
Earlier today, Wednesday, it was reported on Israel TV that both Israel and Hamas have agreed in principle to working out the details of a 30-day pause in the fighting and the release of all hostages being held in Gaza. Details are still to be worked out and glitches could develop, but it is a hopeful sign.
In the north an undeclared war is festering all along the hill country that separates Israel and Lebanon. It involves nearly as many troops as the war in the Gaza Strip. So far, it’s a largely static battle of missiles, artillery, bombing raids and stealthy infiltration. Hezbollah hasn’t unleashed its long-range firepower. Israel hasn’t ordered forward its tanks. But the fighting has intensified this month. Nobody knows how long the border battle can continue before the gloves come off.
“We don’t yet have a name for it,” Israeli Commander Razili said of the cross-border conflict—but across northern Israel and in southern Lebanon, people are starting to call it a war. US diplomats are trying, fruitlessly so far, to broker a cease-fire based on Hezbollah pulling back its fighters from Israel’s doorstep. The militant Shia movement has vowed to carry on firing missiles at Israel for as long as Israeli forces are fighting in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah and its backer Iran.
Washington has urged Israel not to launch a ground assault on southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, caught off guard by events since Oct. 7, is looking to avoid all-out war by restricting its attacks to towns and military bases in a strip across Israel’s north. But Israel says it will have no choice but to drive Hezbollah away from its border unless there’s an unexpected diplomatic breakthrough. It would seem that we will not be able to wait much longer to begin military action there as well.
On the border between Gaza and Egypt, Cairo earlier this week voiced its strenuous objections to any Israeli attempt to take control of the Philadelphi Corridor, the nine-mile road along the Egypt-Gaza border. The announcement comes as the IDF moves southward through Gaza, and will soon have to drive Hamas out of the border city of Rafah while finding a way to end subterranean smuggling from the Sinai Peninsula, which appears to continue despite Egypt’s efforts to stop it. Time will tell how this plays out.
Seeking Future Leadership
Yet another person of interest when seeking potential leaders for the state is Col. (Ret.) Miri Eisin, the Managing Director of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism. She served in the Israeli intelligence community and retired from active duty wirh the rank of full colonel in 2004. Over her twenty-year career in the military, she served as the deputy head of the combat intelligence corps, the personal assistant to the director of military intelligence, and as the intelligence officer in combat units and research departments.
After retiring from the military Eisin served as the Israeli Prime Minister’s international media advisor from the Second Lebanon War until the end of 2007. Over the last ten years, Eisin has been one of Israel’s main presenters, speaking on regional geopolitics and security-related issues in the media worldwide. She teaches at Reichman University in Herzliya and works extensively with the media, student groups, and diplomats. Miri is also a fellow at the Center for International Communication at Bar Ilan University.
Eisin holds a BA from Tel Aviv University in Middle Eastern studies and Political Science, an MA from Haifa University in Security studies, and is a graduate of the Israeli National Defense College.
Her presence in a future Israeli government would add much to the expertise and maturity that will be critical as we recover from this long and ghastly war.

Those previously considering going to college have realized it is costing them a great deal of money to be taught by Marxist professors who hate America, hate Israel and many of their course choices are worthless in terms of providing an income source. Finally, most departments offering these worthless courses are funded by Islamist foundations.
One day, if current birth rates continue, Muslims will control all of Europe and have a tremendous impact on America but for the next 20 to 30 years it would be better for students to learn Spanish and save their money and buy an Island in the Carribean.

First, our education system categorizes people into victim groups. Young people are being assigned to categories based on characteristics like race and gender. You are either the victim or the victimizer. The oppressed or the oppressor. If you happen to be a white, heterosexual male (the horror!), the only way to possibly seek redemption is by becoming an “ally” to one or more of these victim groups.
Second, these grievance groups unite and act through "intersectionality.” This involves protesting and “social justice” through civil unrest—even violence is sanctioned by this radical ideology. Often estranged from their families' traditional values, young people find a distorted sense of purpose and belonging in this so-called “noble revolution.”
The goal is based on a lie…to transform America into a utopian Marxist paradise. The true result will be a hell scape of chaos, decay, and moral corruption that jeopardizes everything we hold dear—and tears apart the fabric of society. If the left has its way, we can look forward to a future of:
Destruction of the nuclear family
Further de-masculinization of our boys and men
Fewer children by discouraging women from the "joys" of motherhood
Making our youth helpless and incompetent (physically and mentally)
Eradicating America’s founding principles
Erasing our Judeo-Christian traditions and replacing God with government
Losing our cherished liberty and freedoms
If America falls, we won’t be taken down by bullets and tanks. We will be taken down from within. Our nation’s adversaries are watching. America as we know it cannot survive if young people continue to embrace destructive leftist ideas and reject Judeo-Christian values.
