‘Iran on one-yard line’ approaching nuclear weapon, says Rep. Schneider

The Democratic congressman from Illinois, who recently joined the House Foreign Affairs Committee, shared some priorities with JNS.

The Democratic House Steering and Policy Committee named Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on March 7. Schneider, who is Jewish and once worked in a kibbutz wiring factory, is the only Democrat waived onto the committee, where he has served for three prior terms.

“Congress has an important role to play in protecting the safety and security of Israel, America’s closest ally in the Middle East,” he told JNS. “The Abraham Accords have already made historic progress in changing the dynamic of the entire Middle East and hold the hope for more positive steps towards regional peace.”

The congressman says he is proud to be a co-chair and founding member of the “bipartisan, bicameral Abraham Accords Caucus, which will further Congress’ work toward ensuring a secure, Jewish and democratic Israel living side by side with a Palestinian state, with security, peace and prosperity for both nations,” he told JNS.

“Today, Iran is on the one-yard line in their drive towards enriching uranium for a nuclear weapon and is threatening our allies in the region in numerous other ways,” he added. “Strengthening our allies by building unity and enhancing shared security capabilities is critical to confronting Iranian threats to the region. U.S. leadership must provide essential security, stability and a unified defense to the region.”

In a public statement, Schneider, who also serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, added: “I expect to continue my work promoting peace and stability in the Middle East and, importantly, working to ensure Iran never succeeds in acquiring a nuclear weapon.”

3 hurt in Tel Aviv shooting attack

1 person in critical condition, 1 in moderate condition, 1 in light condition after being shot on Dizengoff street. Shooter neutralized

Three people were wounded, one seriously, one moderately, and one lightly, in a terrorist shooting attack in Tel Aviv on Thursday night. The shooter has reportedly been neutralized by a police officer.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai stated that the shooting was a terrorist attack and that a terrorist was killed. Huldai called on the protesters against the judicial reforms to vacate the place of the attack.

Magen David Adom said in a statement: "At 8:40 p.m., a report was received at MDA's 101 hotline in the central region about two people with gunshot wounds near a cafe on Dizengoff Street and Ben Gurion Street in Tel Aviv. This is an initial report only, and further updates will come later."

The wounded, who are reported to be men in their 20s, have been taken to Ichilov Hospital.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was updated on the shooting during his speech to the Jewish community in Rome, where he is on a diplomatic visit.

Knesset Foreign Affairs Committee chairman MK Yuli Edelstein said: "People don't get up in the morning and decide that today they will kill Jews. There is a whole system behind what is called 'lone-wolf terrorism,' a terminology which I do not accept."

"We must strike at terrorism itself- it doesn't matter what you call it. I am praying for the recovery of the wounded and congratulate the security forces for the professional and quick neutralization of the terrorist," Edelstein. said.

Likud MK Danny Danon said: "A serious attack was committed tonight in the heart of Tel Aviv. Arab terrorism raises its head and does not distinguish between right and left. I pray for the recovery of the wounded together with the entire people of Israel. I congratulate the security forces for their quick response and elimination of the terrorist."
