Gov. Abbott To Biden: These Five Policies Will Help Secure Border

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday urged President Joe Biden to implement five policies to help secure the U.S. southern border, hand delivering him a letter after the president landed at the El Paso International Airport. "Thousands of Texans have lost their lives," Abbott told reporters, saying he told the president that the chaos at the border was a result of the president's "refusal to enforce immigration law" already passed by Congress.

The Tragedy of Kevin McCarthy
He’s very good at winning elections but doesn’t have what it takes to be a great legislative leader.
By Will Hurd

It’s hard not to see the predicament of Rep. Kevin McCarthy as a tragedy. A man who was heralded 15 years ago as a new brand of conservative leader, who set records for fundraising, and who helped get candidates elected all over the country now has had to suffer through successive failures to become speaker of the House.

Mr. McCarthy was a co-author, with future Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, of “Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders” (2010), which criticized earlier Republicans, particularly on matters of the federal budget. They wrote that Republicans were “arrogant and out of touch” and suffered “failures from high-profile ethics lapses to the inability to rein in spending or even slow the growth of government.”

Yet as a lawmaker, and in four years as minority leader, Mr. McCarthy showed no particular legislative interests and had no signature achievements. He would have been the perfect Republican National Committee chairman, a job that’s concerned only with building the party and winning elections. As a leader in Congress, he needed to demonstrate that he could effectively legislate and govern as well.

Winning elections is the first step to good governance. Effective policy and legislation is the next. Too many politicians have forgotten over the past decade that good policy is good politics. An effective lawmaker or statesman has to focus on more than the X’s and O’s of elections.

Mr. McCarthy repeatedly tried to placate bomb throwers in his own party, who were never going to be happy with anything less than complete capitulation. He bent over backward to please a vocal minority while taking for granted that the reasonable majority of his party would remain loyal. He even exhibited such on the eve of the speakership vote. Instead of staying firm and backing the wishes of the rational wing of the party, he caved in to the demands of his opposition on issues like making it easier to “vacate the chair”—the legislative process to remove the speaker. He was willing to weaken the speakership to win it. If he’d spent more time working with rational lawmakers to get like-minded candidates elected, he wouldn’t have ended up in this position.

The most glaring example of his appeasement: On the afternoon of Jan. 6, 2021, Mr. McCarthy reportedly spoke honestly to President Trump about the rioters in the Capitol: “They’re trying to f— kill me!” A few weeks later, to get back into Mr. Trump’s good graces, he changed his tune and went to Mar-a-Lago “to make peace with the ex-president,” as he told his colleagues.

Mr. McCarthy was only one of many Republicans who hitched their wagons to Mr. Trump. But the former president has repeatedly shown that he is a loser with a base that never grows, and that trusting him is a fool’s errand. By following him, Republicans lost the House in 2018, the White House in 2020, and the Senate in 2020 and again in 2022. He was a major contributing factor in preventing a red wave last year. The result was a House majority so slender that a few extremists had the power to deny the speakership to the man Mr. Trump once called “my Kevin.”

Mr. Hurd, a Republican, represented Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, 2017-21. He is author of “American Reboot: An Idealist’s Guide to Getting Big Things Done.”

Israel-Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian issue

And

Cliff May is a balanced, reasonable advocate of rational Israeli actions. This is why I post his balanced Op Ed's.  He understands any chink Palestinians gain from a reasonable effort on the part of Israel is used by Palestinians  to further turn it into a chunk knowing they at least have the mass media and vocal advocacy on their side, ie U.N. and weakling support from feckless Arab leadership.

Walk like an Israeli
Why a Jew’s visit to the holiest Jewish site provokes outrage
By Clifford D. May

Imagine if Pope Francis said: “Only Christians are permitted in the Vatican! No Muslims and no Jews!” The “international community” would be outraged. But the pontiff would never say that. Muslims and Jews are welcome in the Vatican.

Imagine if Israelis said: “Only Jews are permitted on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount! No Muslims and no Christians!” The “international community” would be outraged. But Israelis would never say that. Christians and Muslims are welcome on the Temple Mount, Judaism’s most sacred site, the place where two great Jewish temples were built and then destroyed by foreign empires.

Imagine if Palestinians, Jordanians, and others said: “Only Muslims are permitted on Haram al-Sharif, from which Muhammad ascended to Heaven and the third holiest site for Muslims!” In fact, that is what many Palestinians, Jordanians, and others are saying, and the “international community” is outraged – but at Israelis for not accepting rules intended only for Jews.

Do you understand why the Temple Mount and Haram al-Sharif occupy the same small hilltop? It’s because, in antiquity, imperialist conquerors – not just Muslims – commonly built atop the holy sites of those they conquered.

Today, however, the “international community” claims to value tolerance, diversity, and inclusion. Does it? And the Biden administration presents itself as a champion of those values. Is it?

“We are deeply concerned by the visit of the Israeli minister at the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif,” declared U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price. “This visit has the potential of exacerbating tensions and leading to violence.” Whose tensions may be exacerbated and why that might lead to violence, he didn’t say.

The Israeli minister to whom he was referring is Itamar Ben-Gvir whose Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party is a member of the coalition that has restored Benjamin Netanyahu to the prime ministership. Mr. Ben-Gvir is on the far right of the Israeli political spectrum but that’s irrelevant here.

He’s an Israeli, a Jew, and an official in a democratically elected government that has sovereignty over the Temple Mount/Haram al Sharif.

At 7 AM on the morning of Jan. 3rd, he entered the compound, walked around for 13 minutes, and then quietly departed. He did not approach – much less enter – the al-Aqsa Mosque which is on the south end of the plaza.

Afterwards, he said that in his official capacity as national security minister he will ensure that Muslims and Christians as well as Jews are free to visit the site.

Nevertheless, U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Mohamed Khaled Khiari called Mr. Ben-Gvir’s visit “particularly inflammatory.”

Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, and the Kingdom of Jordan issued statements declaring that if blood spills, Israelis will be to blame.

The Jordanian statement condemned “in the severest of terms the storming” of the Haram al-Sharif and the violation of the “sanctity” of the al-Aqsa Mosque.

When walking becomes storming based solely on the nationality, race, ethnicity, and/or religion of the individual putting one foot in front of another, shouldn’t there be objections from members of the “international community” who say they oppose discrimination?

Instead, however, the United Arab Emirates, in alliance with the People’s Republic of China, demanded the U.N. Security Council hold an “emergency” meeting to discuss the presence of a Jew at Judaism’s holiest site.

The Emiratis – signatories of the Abraham Accords, establishing peaceful relations with Israel – doubtless want to be seen as defenders of Islam and Palestinians. They might ask themselves: Does endorsing an intolerant interpretation of Islam really benefit Muslims and Palestinians?

A few years ago, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared that both the al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher – among the holiest of places for Christians – “are ours.” Jews, he added, “have no right to defile them with their filthy feet.” I’m guessing that didn’t persuade most Israelis to take “risks for peace.”

As for China’s rulers, they’re right now persecuting their Muslim subjects to the point of genocide. They’ve destroyed thousands of mosques in Xinjiang, homeland of the Uyghurs. Yet Beijing’s relations with Muslim-majority states remain cordial. Defaming Israel helps China’s rulers keep them that way.

If you’ve been reading about this brouhaha in most media, you’ve probably seen appeals to “preserve the historic status quo” with little or no explanation of what that means. I’ll tell you.

After the flag of the British Empire in Jerusalem was lowered for the last time in 1948, Israelis declared their independence. They were immediately attacked by surrounding Arab nations.

Jordanian forces conquered and occupied east Jerusalem from which they expelled all Jews. And they forbade Jews of any nationality – but not Israeli Arabs – from worshipping on the holy hilltop. And they destroyed or desecrated Jewish religious sites.

In the defensive Six-Day War of 1967, Israelis drove Jordanians out of east Jerusalem. But, as a conciliatory gesture, Israeli leaders agreed that a waqf, a Jordanian-controlled entity, would have religious authority over the compound while Israelis would maintain security, keeping the holy sites open to all – though only Muslims would be allowed to pray there.

This status quo remains but there is debate among Israelis about the prohibition on prayer by non-Muslims. In free countries, debate is not unusual. The countries attacking Israel – rhetorically and/or kinetically –choose to ignore this fact.

Antisemites cast Jews as pariahs. Today, they also cast the only surviving and thriving Jewish community in the Middle East as a pariah state

Antisemitism is a mutating virus. Most Israelis have concluded that the modern variant cannot be treated – much less cured – by making additional concessions to those who despise them along with those in the “international community” who aid and abet such hatred.

If you’re looking for a succinct explanation of why Israelis elected a right-wing coalition, there you have it.

Defense Is Now a Republican Target
Jim Jordan confirms that Kevin McCarthy put the U.S. military on the budget block.
By The Editorial Board

As we reported Saturday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s deal with GOP dissenters puts defense spending on the chopping block. No less than Rep. Jim Jordan, spiritual leader of the House Freedom Caucus, confirmed this in response to a question from host Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday.

“We got a $32 trillion debt. Everything has to be on the table,” Mr. Jordan said. He said the Pentagon should focus on money for the troops and cut the general staff.

“Maybe if we focused on that, helping the troops who do so much of the work out there for our great country, and maybe focus on getting rid of all the woke policies in our military, we’d have the money we need to make sure our troops get the pay raise they deserve, we have the weapons systems and the training that needs to be done, so we’re ready to deal with our adversaries around the planet, that’s what we want to focus on,” Mr. Jordan said.

If Congress wants to cut general officer and PR jobs, and reform military healthcare and pensions, by all means go for it. The latter two are where some money is, but neither is likely to happen this Congress. Woke training is a matter of culture, not money.

The reality is that if defense is cut, what will go first is spending for operations and maintenance to sustain military readiness, as well as money for the weapons to deter China. If the GOP rebels honor their demand for “regular order,” defense hawks may have more votes. But it’s worrisome that some Republicans are joining the progressive calls to shrink the military when the world grows more dangerous.

And:

Jordan is one of the coolest and best but he can't overcome stonewalling and the people who run government agencies when they want to avid being truthful.  D.C is a place where servants of "we the people" go to gain power, wealth and perfect their ability to lie and get rewarded by being promoted.

Yes, perhaps overly cynical because there are plenty of decent, honest and capable public servants but the crooks destroy everything as they have done to The FBI.

In the process of his investigation I hope Jordan does not drown in the swamp he wants to drain. It has ben tried before.

Hunter Biden and News Suppression
Only America has its hands over its eyes concerning certain actions of the FBI.
By Holman W. Jenkins, Jr.

The latest news from the Twitter files, which you probably didn’t hear from your news providers, brings us to the start of the Russia collusion hoax, as seen in messages from Democrats insisting that Twitter identify Russian activity that could be blamed for electing Donald Trump.

For social psychologists the deluge ought to reinforce just how strange were the consequences of Mr. Trump’s entry into presidential politics in 2015, sparking a flood of mendacity only a fraction of which came from Mr. Trump himself.

The sourcing here is impeccable—official releases of company documents authorized by Twitter’s CEO. No, it’s not yet a smoking gun. But any news organization that merits the description would by now, if not two years ago, be saying: Let’s find out. Unfortunately many U.S. reporting outlets face a Catch-22: their own complicity.

Was this not an act as reckless as any Mr. Trump is accused of, though it goes uncriticized? Mr. Putin tomorrow could call a press conference to point out that the U.S. establishment conspired falsely to frame Russia to cover up a purely private Biden family embarrassment, with the apparent goal of misleading voters and assuring President Biden’s election. He couldn’t be gainsaid. Our intelligence community put this weapon in Mr. Putin’s hand with which to discredit the election of a president.

Not quite dispositive was an earlier Twitter release to independent journalist Michael Shellenberger touching on a crucial question: Did the FBI, which possessed the Hunter Biden laptop and knew what it contained, knowingly mislead media outlets by telling them the New York Post story was the upshot of a Russian intelligence operation? The evidence is suggestive, including the role of former FBI general counsel James Baker, by then a Twitter employee, in pushing fellow Twitter executives to adopt the FBI’s view against their better judgment. In the hours before the story leaked, secret FBI documents whose content remains unknown were urgently shared with Twitter.

If Mr. Putin chose to, he could also tell us what he knows—which is more than the American people know—about the secret and likely fake “Russian intelligence” that FBI chief James Comey used to justify his interventions in the Clinton email case. The disclosures already in the public arena make a prima facie case that the intelligence agency most responsible for meddling in U.S. politics was our own. Even Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff has quietly acknowledged as much.

The world doesn’t put its hands over its eyes regarding these matters just because we do. When the U.S. turns down one of his weapons requests, Ukraine’s president must wonder whether it’s payback to Mr. Putin for the secrets he keeps on behalf of the U.S. intelligence community and FBI.

Mr. Biden himself, it should be emphasized, is a non-actor in any of this as far as we know. Yet his presidency is complicated by it.

A second implication goes unexamined: I’m not paranoid, a crack user or son of a vice president but I destroy old hard drives. I retire my laptops only after making sure my private data is erased. Nobody of Hunter’s generation behaves the way he did—making and preserving a video record of his illegal drug use and prostitutes, then carelessly discarding devices on which it is accessible—unless some part of him wanted to humiliate and embarrass his father.

News has a record-keeping function. If the facts are well-aired, so will be the implications.

If active-duty FBI agents weren’t involved, America’s retired intelligence leaders certainly were—51 of them publicly promoting the fiction that the laptop was a Russian plot.

A Feb. 24, 2019, text exchange published by the Post and uncontested by the Bidens shows Hunter berating his father over Hunter’s own bad press while Mr. Biden pleads that he’s “positive” his texts are a “target.” Hunter demands his father run for president and then a short time later turns up as the voluble primary source for an 11,000-word New Yorker profile, detailing his scandals, that lands just as his father is pursuing the campaign his son urged on him.

Who knows what voters would have made of this but it’s something they might have wanted to roll around in their minds a bit before pulling the lever. When we suppress legitimate news, a long tail of unknowable consequences follow.

To repeat a prediction, if Mr. Trump is not the 2024 GOP nominee, look out, Joe Biden. The mainstream press, which once led on the Hunter Biden story, will lift the lid when no longer guided by the Trump exception, under which the rules of honest news reporting are apparently suspended. This is the best-case outcome, I might add. You might reasonably worry that the rules of honest news reporting will never return.

The release of the so-called 'Twitter Files' continues, with attention now turning to Twitter's relationship with agencies including the FBI and DHS

Biden’s Classified Document Stash
A sauce for the gander moment that makes charging Trump much harder.
The Editorial Board

Whatever gods are scripting America’s political drama these days, they sure do have a sense of humor. On Monday CBS broke the news that, days before the midterm elections, “roughly 10” documents with classification markings were found among Joe Biden’s vice presidential files in a private office he once used. A federal prosecutor is investigating, and the FBI is involved.

Citing a single anonymous source, CNN says Mr. Biden “didn’t know the documents were there.” His personal lawyers found the classified material while packing files in a locked closet at an office that Mr. Biden used beginning in 2017. After the discovery, the National Archives was notified the same day, and the papers were handed over the following morning. Some of the documents were designated as “sensitive compartmented information,” which means they were classified above Top Secret.

News analysts are cautioning that this apparent mishandling of material is different from Mr. Trump’s retention of hundreds of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home, which ultimately triggered an extraordinary FBI search last year. That’s true as far as it goes. Mr. Biden’s office had many fewer documents, and he wasn’t wrangling with the National Archives for months over his right to keep them.

On the other hand, Mr. Biden as Vice President had no authority to declassify documents on his own, unlike the President. He also isn’t covered by the Presidential Records Act provision that gives former Presidents access to documents from their presidential years in cooperation with the National Archives. Mr. Biden had no authority to hold such classified documents at all in a private office.

None of this is to say that Mr. Biden should be prosecuted, despite the Justice Department investigation. But it is a sauce for the gander political moment, and it certainly does bear on whether Justice can fairly prosecute Mr. Trump for similar mishandling.

Mr. Biden was notably unforgiving about Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago files last year. “When you saw the photograph of the top secret documents laid out on the floor at Mar-a-Lago, what did you think to yourself?” Mr. Biden was asked on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”

“How anyone could be that irresponsible,” Mr. Biden replied. “And I thought: What data was in there that may compromise sources and methods?” The same question applies to Mr. Biden’s documents.

Special Counsel Jack Smith is investigating Mr. Trump’s handling of the Mar-a-Lago documents, which was at least reckless. But consider the political context in which Mr. Smith must now make a prosecutorial decision. Hillary Clinton’s private server exposed classified material, but the FBI absolved her in 2016. Now we learn Mr. Biden’s private office contained classified material that someone mishandled.

Is Mr. Smith, who answers to Mr. Biden through Attorney General Merrick Garland, really going to indict Mr. Trump for mishandling documents while Mr. Biden is absolved? Legal nuances aside, the underlying offense is far too close for safe political comfort. Barring new evidence in the Mar-a-Lago case, half the country would conclude the sitting President is prosecuting his chief political competitor for an offense that he also committed.

Mr. Garland did himself no political favors by failing to disclose this news as soon as he found out. The leak so many weeks later, with its made-to-order Biden explanations, sounds a little too tidy. All the more reason to settle the Mar-a-Lago case short of prosecution, and let Mr. Trump’s political future be decided by the voters

The Governor of New York has egg on her face, is swallowing her stupidity and even may wind up choking. The real Hochul has been exposed and all the effort to reveal the true person should now be evident.

However, most New Yorkers are insular people and know it all.  Just ask them as they drink their own bathwater and when they say it, they believe it becomes so - so stupid.

By now they should be regretting their failure in not electing Lee Zeldin.

Hochul Does a 180 After Winning Election
By lev radin / shutterstock.com

There comes a point in all of our lives when we realize that what we wish for might not be nearly as great as we thought. Going along the lines of the truth that the grass is not always greener on the other side, we sometimes need to be careful of what we wish for.

And for Kathy Hochul, New York’s newly re-elected governor, no truer statement could be said at the moment.

You might remember that during her months of campaigning to stay in the governor’s mansion, she made one specific speech that suggested that only Democrats and liberals were welcome in her state. In fact, she quite literally told Republicans to “jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong.

Basically, what she meant was that New York was a state for her kind, Democrats. And as such, no one who didn’t agree with her politics or the party’s agenda would be tolerated. Sounds quite tyrannical, right?

Well, it appears she might have just gotten that wish. Only it might not be quite the dream she imagined.

As the New York Post reported at the time, her demands for GOP members to leave the state was really just aimed at former President Donald Trump, her GOP rival for Governor Lee Zeldin, and then GOP congressional candidate Marc Molinaro.

Of course, it didn’t come out so pointed. Instead, it sounded as though any New Yorker who didn’t side with liberal agenda talking points should leave the state.

And sadly for Hochul, it seems a good number followed her advice.

Of course, most didn’t have to be told by her to do so. Thanks to liberal crime reforms, rampant homelessness, and policies that no longer protect the people, people of all walks of life have been not so slowly leaving the state for years.

The trend first became more noticeable during the pandemic, when oppressive measures were put in place that left many without jobs, education, or even social lives. It quickly became the most vacated state in the nation. Other states, and decidedly liberal ones like California and Illinois, also saw the same trends.

But while those other states recovered somewhat after the end of the pandemic, New York has continued to lose people at a rather terrifying rate. Still, to this day, it leads the nation in population decline. And just as she wished, states like Florida lead in population growth.
New York has lost enough people, in fact, they are now also losing representation in Congress.

Another problem the state is having is that of those who are left in the state, a growing number of them are a bit more socialist in tendencies.

This means that like America’s most famous socialists, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while they are quite vocal about what they want, they aren’t exactly known for their productivity. And that means they can’t exactly be taxed to pay for all of Hochul’s agenda items. Also left in the state are groups such as Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and Planned Parenthood, all of which seem more interested in producing crime and death than bettering communities.

While Hochul might have wished for such supporters during her campaign, she’s likely second-guessing that wish now that the reality of her win and the state’s declining population.

In fact, she even suggested as much during her inaugural speech on Sunday.

According to Fox News, Hochul proclaimed that one thing she now wants to accomplish is to “reverse the trend of people leaving our state.”

But to do so, she will have to give up on a good number of her campaign promises to liberals. Thousands of those who have already left have learned the truth for themselves; Republican leaders like Hochul’s opposite in Florida actually support freedom and a life well lived. New York leaders seem to only want more power and money.

And now that they can’t get it from Republicans, they realize they should have been more cautious with their wishes. Then again, maybe they should have used their brains.

Another problem the state is having is that of those who are left in the state, a growing number of them are a bit more socialist in tendencies.

It should be evident, as a result of the constant bashing and negative/false news reports Israel receives from all sources, Israel is the world's piñata. This they have in common with Trump who has done so much for the nation with The Abraham Accords and because of his abrasive personality receives similar bashing.
