A recent letter I sent to the local paper decrying the situation with our irresponsible County School Board:

"Education is critical if the foundation of our Republic is not going to crumble and with it  our precious freedoms.

This I why I recently held a meet and greet for Jolene Byrne and Martin Sullivan.  Two young bright locals running for President of Chatham County School Board and State House Representative of District 166.

Both have the temperament and background to make excellent public servants. They are willing to appear at open meetings and to discuss, forthrightly, their views.

Tom Barton and the local paper has exposed what we all know.  The current Chatham Board is comprised of members unworthy of their commitment to local  public education being the best tax money can deliver.

Barton points out four of the candidates are unopposed because the pain and torture of serving in that position are beyond the tolerance of competent people. Consequently, our children continue to be  cheated, tax payers continue to be cheated and we, the public, continue to allow ourselves to be cheated.

As for Barton's call for Meg Heap to investigate the alleged shenanigans at Hesse School, I have no doubt Meg,who has been outstanding, will rise to the challenge.

If the current situation  is what we want with respect to local public education  then remain apathetic.

If not,  vote for candidates willing to assume the  awesome challenges like Byrne and Sullivan.

The last thing we need is more continuing  divisiveness and ego driven pettiness in the Chatham County School Board."

• Credit the NY Times for noting Abbas’ checkered background on the Holocaust and an Israeli response that deserves wider acknowledgement:

Mr. Abbas has been vilified as a Holocaust denier because in his doctoral dissertation, published as a book in 1983, he challenged the number of Jewish victims and argued that Zionists had collaborated with Nazis to propel more people to what would become Israel. A senior Israeli minister,incensed at quotations from Hitler highlighted on Facebook pages affiliated with the Palestinian Authority, denounced Mr. Abbas earlier this year as “the most anti-Semitic leader in the world” at a conference in Tel Aviv . . . .

“For Abu Mazen to put out a statement when he’s embraced Hamas, that’s a serious problem,” the official said, using Mr. Abbas’s nickname. Further, he said, Mr. Abbas should have condemned Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Palestinian who as Grand Mufti of Jerusalem supported the Nazi campaign to exterminate Jews. “Abbas’s message would ring truer if Palestinians would look at their own past and their own attitude at the time to the genocide of the Jews.”
