I believe the recession either has already begun or will in the 2d quarter and will last most of the 2d and 3rd.  I also believe the market is finished for now regardless of earnings of secondary type stocks. It will continue to be fixated on growth but not even growth will move the market .upward.

I also believe The Fed will be partly responsible because it is overly  intent on raising rates when it probably needs to rest. and observe te effect of what it has already done.

Equity risk premium too low.

Joe "Blow" plans to run another basement, avoid too much campaigning for "Prez" and his party will seek another way to steal the election.

It is Trump's to lose.  If he focuses on Joe's failures and in a straightforward manner the middle core of voters will turn his way.

Would be a shame for DeSantis to run and blow the nomination as he well might so perhaps he should wait 4 years he is young.

Time will tell.  Always does.

Men Are Just Happier People!
What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park.

Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress - $5,000. Tux rental - $100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks.

A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Two pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck.

You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes - one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache... You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24in 25 minutes.

Cover Up?America - What's Happening? Lies and Facts. WSJ Op Ed's We Are Sinking.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
These are a few comments about what is happening in America.

Covid pretty much eliminated children from exercising . We shut down normalcy and children began binge eating and now they seek operations to reduce the effect of binge eating..We are learning Fauci knew the virus escaped from a Chinese lab he urged America finance so we could learn about dangerous germs etc. Fauci then lied and urged we shut down an entire economy, the largest in the world,

Biden shut down the largest airport in Afghanistan that Trump urged we retain and keep open so we could withdraw in a controlled manner. Consequently, we needlessly lost 13 American military personnel, hundred of those who helped us and we abandoned billions of dollars of arms.  The Taliban now has one of the largest military forces in the world and no doubt will make another terrorist attack on our homeland.

We just emptied our Sudan Embassy because of Biden's contempt for Trump and his disregard for the effectiveness of The Abraham Accords because Sudan and Israel were engaged, actively so, in conducting commerce and trade etc..

Inflation has exploded as we chose energy dependence when it was totally un-necessary. Nay stupid.

China now is playing footsy with our former allies and Xi is going around the world telling our former allies we are a sinking world leader.

Finally, we have had verified 51 American intelligence officers signed a letter in order to influence the 2020 election so Biden would win.  The FBI knew there was no Russian involvement and Sec of State Blinkin purposely sought their signatures.

Meanwhile, we are learning about money shifts from China to Biden family members through Hunter Has any of this laundered money touched our President's hands?  Furthermore, has there been efforts to stop these transfers by the FBI and AG. Meanwhile, Hunter now has moved into The White House.

If the American people allow this to slide kiss this republic goodbye. In less than a few months the GOP has revealed all this while the FBI sat on this, knowing it had happened for 2 years.

Trump was the one Democrats sought to blame he was guilty of what the Biden Administration were doing.

My wife believes nothing will happen ie. so what who cares nothing will happen.

Don't forget Biden told us he knew nothing about this.

Finally, Biden refuses to meet and negotiate with McCarthy who has come up with a plan that addresses serious budget issues..

Democrat lies and GOP factual responses:

+++

See below for some helpful charge and response talkers on the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, courtesy of Rep. Buddy Carter

CHARGE: Raising the debt limit should not be up for negotiation.

RESPONSE: As Vice President, Joe Biden led debt limit negotiations for the Obama administration. In 2011, Joe Biden was “really pleased and thankful” for the opportunity to negotiate on the debt limit.

Biden even said negotiating the debt limit in 2011 was an ”honor”: “I have had the great honor of spending hours and hours and hours, as you’ve covered my negotiating the debt limit and other things, with the leaders of the Republican Party.”

During 2011 debt limit negotiations, Biden said “we’ve got to make some real progress” on the long-term debt. Back then, the national debt was around $14 trillion. Today, the national debt is over $31 trillion – and Biden refuses to negotiate.

CHARGE: House Republicans are irresponsible by refusing to pass a clean debt ceiling increase – which Congress passed three times under the Trump administration.

RESPONSE: There were no clean debt limit increases under the Trump administration. House and Senate Democrats participated in negotiations and leveraged the debt limit every time to demand spending changes and other policies.

CHARGE: House Republicans have not produced a budget to show the American people where they want to eliminate waste.

RESPONSE: This bill has $4.5 trillion in savings. A budget resolution cannot raise the debt limit and cannot get signed into law because it is never presented to the President. We're prioritizing the approach that would lift the debt ceiling in a responsible manner.

CHARGE: House Republicans’ “plan” is just vague spending limits. President Biden’s budget provides detail on how every penny should be spent.

RESPONSE: House Republicans will soon begin work on our appropriations bills, which will prioritize spending, eliminate waste, and meet the fiscal year 2022 limit. In addition, the Limit, Save, Grow Act contains roughly $1 trillion in mandatory savings.

CHARGE: House Republicans’ bill would cut veterans medical care.

RESPONSE: House Republicans will responsibly prioritize spending in the upcoming appropriations process. Democrats have been playing games with veterans for years in order to make room for their pet projects elsewhere in the budget. We should prioritize meeting our veterans’ needs instead of trying to leverage their benefits for unrelated spending.

As Speaker McCarthy said, “Don’t believe anyone who says these are draconian limits. They’re the same spending levels we operated under just last [December]. And we’ll make sure that our veterans and our service members are taken care of.”

CHARGE: House Republicans’ bill would kill green jobs spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act, offshore American manufacturing, increase energy bills, give asthma to kids, and literally melt bones.

RESPONSE: Over 90 percent of climate subsidies from the so-called Inflation Reduction Act go directly to large corporations with over $1 billion in sales, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. These market-distorting credits are bad policy, bad economics, and will ultimately benefit foreign manufacturers in China at the expense of American taxpayers.

The Limit, Save, Grow Act makes us less dependent on China. By including the bipartisan Lower Energy Costs Act in House Republicans’ debt limit plan, we will expand American energy production and lower costs for the American people.

CHARGE: House Republicans’ bill would defund law enforcement, including the FBI.

RESPONSE: House Republicans will continue to support and defend law enforcement by prioritizing spending in the upcoming appropriations process. This bill ensures that overall discretionary spending is capped at the same level the federal government was operating under in December 2022 – just four months ago.

The American people deserve an honest accounting of the scope of a proposed $4 billion pork project to build a new FBI headquarters that is costing more than twice what it took to build the Pentagon.

CHARGE: House Republicans’ bill would cut meals on wheels, leave Americans across the country hungry, cut cancer research funding, take health care away from millions of Americans, and cut education.

RESPONSE: House Republicans will prioritize spending in the upcoming appropriations process. This bill ensures that overall discretionary spending is capped at the same level the federal government was operating under in December 2022 – just four months ago

Is Alvin Bragg’s Case Against Trump Constitutional?

Biden—and all future presidents—should hope that it is judged to violate the Supremacy Clause.

By David B. Rivkin Jr. and Kristin A. Shapiro

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s indictment of Donald Trump could mean trouble down the road for Joe Biden. “I think our Republican AGs and DAs”—attorneys general and district attorneys—“should get creative,” Mike Davis, a Republican former Senate staffer, told the New York Post. Rep. James Comer told Fox that he’s heard from at least two prosecutors who “want to know if there are ways they can go after the Bidens now.”

Mr. Biden himself is currently safe under the accepted view that sitting presidents are immune from prosecution. But under the Trump precedent, what’s to stop an ambitious Republican prosecutor somewhere from bringing dubious state charges against him before a hostile jury after he leaves office? Likewise for his successors of either party. Every four to eight years, prosecutors would order up a presidential ham sandwich. Presidents might end up having to flee the country when they leave office.

What the House Judiciary Committee Heard in New York City

But there’s a way Mr. Trump could stop the madness that would serve his own interests as well as his successors’. His lawyers should file a notice in the Southern District of New York to remove the case to federal court under a unique legal defense: immunity under the U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.

The clause provides that federal laws, including the Constitution, “shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, any thing in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding.” The Supreme Court stated in McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) that “it is of the very essence” of the federal government’s supremacy “to remove all obstacles to its action within its own sphere, and so to modify every power vested in subordinate governments, as to exempt its own operations from their own influence.” The justices invalidated Maryland’s tax on the Bank of the United States on grounds that the power to tax the federal government would make a state “capable of arresting all the measures of the government, and of prostrating it at the foot of the states.”

One pivotal aspect of the Supremacy Clause is its provision of immunity to federal officers from state criminal prosecution for actions relating to their federal duties. The seminal case is In re Neagle (1890), in which the justices held that California couldn’t criminally prosecute a federal marshal for killing a man in defense of Justice Stephen Field. If a federal officer “can be arrested and brought to trial in a state court for an alleged offense against the law of the state, yet warranted by the federal authority they possess,” the court found, “the operations of the general government may at any time be arrested at the will of one of its members.”

To be sure, the case against Mr. Trump involves conduct that wasn’t “warranted by the federal authority” he possessed. But there is a strong argument that Supremacy Clause immunity should extend to any state criminal prosecutions of federal officers undertaken because of their federal service, even if the charged conduct is unrelated to their federal duties. Permitting states to burden former federal officers on account of their federal services offends the Supremacy Clause’s core principles and makes it easy for aggressive state prosecutors to circumvent. As the Supreme Court warned in Neagle, “unfriendly” states could administer the law “in such a manner as to paralyze the operations of the government.” That threat exists anytime former or current federal officers are targeted for criminal prosecution because of their federal service. A president or other official can’t lead effectively under constant threat of retaliatory prosecution.

Mr. Trump’s foes like to say that no one is above the law; and Mr. Biden’s enemies would no doubt adopt the same slogan. But Supremacy Clause immunity wouldn’t vitiate that principle. It wouldn’t prevent federal prosecutions, and it would protect against state criminal prosecutions only when the prosecutor targeted the defendant for his federal service. Mr. Trump could still be prosecuted if he shot a passerby on Fifth Avenue.

A recognition of Supremacy Clause immunity in this context would involve an inquiry into a prosecutor’s state of mind, something courts are reluctant to undertake in most contexts. But not all—courts are regularly required to determine, for example, whether a prosecutor has engaged in racial discrimination in jury selection, or whether a state criminal prosecution is motivated by a desire to harass the defendant.

First Amendment case law also recognizes, in the context of protecting core constitutional rights, the impermissibility of disparate law-enforcement treatment. In Nieves v. Bartlett (2019), the high court held that probable cause isn’t sufficient to block a retaliatory-arrest claim “when a plaintiff presents objective evidence that he was arrested when otherwise similarly situated individuals not engaged in the same sort of protected speech had not been.”

If Western Civilization Dies, Put It Down as a Suicide

By Gerald Baker

We are in the grip of an ideology that disowns our genius, denounces our success, disdains merit.

A few years ago the then-boss of Goldman Sachs explained to me the main reason he thought the firm had risen to such a dominant position in global investment banking over the previous half century. At the start of that period, banking was still dominated by a blue-blood class. In London especially, where I began my career in finance, the City was a place in which, in a still heavily regulated market, a slot in one of the big institutions was a coveted ticket to a life of riches.

But the tickets were available mainly to men from the right sort of background. The rules for identifying and selecting these men were opaque. There was no formal bar on anyone from a particular socioeconomic status being admitted to the magic circle—that would have been crass and, even then, illegal. Instead a complex system of semiotics did the job of weeding out the riffraff. A flattened vowel pronunciation, a vulgar word for lavatory, the wrong sort of shoes, and you were excluded without even understanding why. In Britain, the system’s overseers had an acronym by which the untouchables were designated: NQOCD, for “not quite our class, dear.”

Goldman came along and cut through this thicket of asinine, self-perpetuating privilege. It simply hired the best people for the job, however they spoke, whatever they looked like. As long as you were smart, driven, ruthless and committed to making money and beating the living daylights out of the competition, you were in. It worked.

I was reminded of this when I read last week that employees at Goldman have recently been encouraged by their leaders to embrace a full rainbow range of “pronouns” when identifying themselves in communications, including such neologisms as “ze,” “zir” and “zemself.”

It’s a small thing, another little step down in the long, steady descent of Goldman, which I’m told still hires a good number of people of genuine talent, alongside the rising numbers of identity-box-checking drones who help enforce the unspoken rules of woke compliance. We might dismiss it as another piece of ludicrous public-relations messaging designed to keep social-media storm troopers at bay. But I prefer the story I heard recently of a British army officer who, finding zemself seconded to a suitably modern government department and faced with a similar instruction to identify zis pronouns, promptly circulated a memo to colleagues with the declaration that his preferred pronouns were “colonel” and “sir.”

In its small way the Goldman memo colorfully captures the deepening mess the precepts of contemporary ideological orthodoxy are making of our society, our economy and our democracy. It highlights how the real progress made over decades toward a fairer and more equal society is being thrown away under the authority of a new set of rules and rulers as elitist and privileged as the old ones.

For those ancien régime aristocrats, it was having the right shoes or the proper accent. For today’s, it is adherence to the constantly changing rules of ideologically approved thought and language.

It was thanks to the radical meritocracy and audacious dynamism of institutions like Goldman that we were able to dismantle so much of the authority of elite power structures that restrained us from fulfilling our potential. The past 50 years have been marked by the genuine eradication of barriers to opportunity for the underprivileged regardless of ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation or anything else. This is how we were genuinely starting to fulfill the promise of equality.

But the cultural revolution that began in the past decade is re-erecting those barriers and creating new elite power structures, elevated not by talent or hard work, but, curiously, by membership of the self-approved class, signaled by the right luxury beliefs and articulated by the right “inclusive” language.

Adrian Wooldridge, who has written a book on the rise of meritocracy, frames this in a recent article in the Spectator. The left, he says, is “creating a new social order based on virtue, rather than ability.”

Bear with me because I am going to extrapolate from these baneful developments to a much larger worry about the geopolitical conditions we confront.

As we survey the competition between global civilizations in the multipolar world we now inhabit, we see that the West is challenged as it hasn’t been in centuries. It’s axiomatic that a rising China and perhaps other powers look like formidable contenders for global leadership—with implications for our own security and prosperity.

But if we are losing that struggle, it isn’t because of the superiority of authoritarian, communist or autocratic systems. We know that liberal capitalism has done more for human prosperity, health and freedom than any other economic or political system.

If we are losing, it is because we are losing our soul, our sense of purpose as a society, our identity as a civilization. We in the West are in the grip of an ideology that disowns our genius, denounces our success, disdains merit, elevates victimhood, embraces societal self-loathing and enforces it all in a web of exclusionary and authoritarian rules, large and small.

Scolding Isn’t a Foreign Policy

America needs friends, and it isn’t going to win them by delivering lectures.

By Walter Russell Mead

Internationally, it was another grim week for the Biden administration, the United States of America, and world peace. Brazil, the country with the largest population, economy and landmass in Latin America, reinforced its alignment with China as its president Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva pledged to work with Xi Jinping to build a new global order and called on the European Union and the U.S. to stop shipping weapons to Ukraine. Indian officials reported that China is supporting the development of a military listening post on Myanmar’s strategic Great Coco Island in the Bay of Bengal. Saudi Arabia, which flirted a few weeks ago with opening diplomatic relations with Israel, is intensifying its oil cooperation with Russia and now seeks a meeting with Hamas. Farther south, a Sudanese military faction backed by Russia’s Wagner Group battles for control of Africa’s third-largest nation.

The usual spinners and makeup artists are doing their best to make the disorderly unraveling of the American-led world order look like a visionary triumph of enlightened foreign policy, but former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers expressed a more cogent view. Describing America’s increasing loneliness on the world scene, Mr. Summers said, “Somebody from a developing country said to me, ‘What we get from China is an airport. What we get from the United States is a lecture.’ ”

When the Biden administration steps down from the bully pulpit, good things can still happen. A year ago, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.—son of the U.S. Cold War ally and Philippine strongman whose 1986 overthrow was hailed by democracy activists as a milestone in world history—ascended to his father’s former office after a decisive victory in a less-than-pristine election. The democracy lobby was appalled. Six Democratic senators, including three members of the Foreign Relations Committee, wrote a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken warning him to prioritize democracy and rule-of-law issues. Their core prescription for managing the Filipino leader was the same one they prescribe for almost every American bilateral relationship: Lecture more, and when that fails, use sanctions.

Fortunately, the administration was smarter than this. While the Philippines ranks low on the Freedom House global freedom index and ranks high on Transparency International’s measurement of perceived corruption, its location makes the country’s cooperation vital for any serious attempt to deter China from an invasion of Taiwan. Stroking and petting the democracy lobbyists while insulating the relationship from their ill-counseled meddling, Team Biden persuaded Mr. Marcos to allow the U.S. access to four new strategically important bases on its territory as the two countries launched their largest joint military exercise in three decades.

This is surely a better outcome than anything the Biden administration has accomplished by the impassioned stream of moralistic lectures it unleashed against the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

On Mr. Blinken’s recent visit to Vietnam, he again chose morality over moralism, refraining from criticizing the Communist Party of Vietnam for its many policies that displease the democracy lobby in the interest of shoring up the coalition of states aiming to prevent Chinese hegemony in the Indo-Pacific.

Dean Acheson, Harry S. Truman’s secretary of state, thought deeply about the place of morality in foreign policy. “The righteous who seek to deduce foreign policy from ethical or moral principles are as misleading and misled as the modern Machiavellis who would conduct our foreign relations without regard to them,” he said in 1964.

America’s Cold War policy aimed at stopping the spread of Soviet tyranny was, Acheson rightly believed, deeply moral. Today, the Chinese Communist Party has become an expansionist, tyrannical power whose inordinate ambition endangers freedom world-wide. America’s interests and values both lead us to oppose that ambition, even as we seek to avoid the catastrophe of another great-power war.

Too many self-described democracy activists want the U.S. to dissipate its diplomatic energy in moralistic posturing. They would rather we prioritized sermons and sanctions over building a multilateral coalition to check Chinese expansion. Their problem is not that they love righteousness too much. It is that they have thought too little and too superficially about what righteousness really demands.

Moral foreign policy often requires pragmatism. Defeating Nazi Germany required an alliance with the equally evil Soviet Union. And President Nixon’s rapprochement with Mao’s China, then at the horrifying acme of the Cultural Revolution, similarly was driven by the need to counter the greater threat posed at that time by the Soviet Union.

After the Cold War, many Americans thought that global moral improvement had replaced national security as the principal goal of American foreign policy and that pragmatic calculation was a form of moral cowardice.

Those illusions can no longer be sustained.

America needs friends now, and nobody likes or trusts the village scold.

A lonely 70-year-old widow decided it was time to marry again. She put an ad in the local newspaper that read: “Husband wanted! Must be in my age group, must not beat me, must not run around on me and must still be good in bed. All applicants please apply in person.”

The following day, she heard the doorbell. She opened the door and much to her dismay saw a grey-haired gentleman sitting in a wheelchair. He had no arms or legs.

“You’re not really asking me to consider you, are you?” the widow asked. “Just look at you, you have no legs!”

The old gent smiled: “Therefore, I cannot run around on you!”

“You don’t have any arms either!” she snorted.

Again, the old man smiled: “Therefore, I can never beat you!”

She raised an eyebrow and asked intently: “Are you still good in bed?”

The old man leaned back, beamed a big smile and said: “I rang the doorbell, didn’t I?

This is a matter of national security!

First: Communist China purchased farmland all over America, including land next to a MAJOR American military base.

Then: They flew their spy balloons over the US to capture information on US military bases.

Now: Chinese police have opened up a station in New York City to spy on their citizens and FORCE them to return to China to face punishment for “crimes” against the state.

75 years after its establishment, Israel's population hits 9.73 million
183,000 babies born in Israel over the last 12 months, with Israel's population growing by 2.3%.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) revealed Israel's population data Monday, ahead of the country's 75th Independence Day.

Israel's population is now 9,727,000, including 7,145,000 Jews (73.5% of the total), 2,048,000 Arabs (21.0%), and 534,000 others (5.5%).

Since Israel’s previous Independence Day, Israel's population has grown by 216,000 people (a growth of 2.3%).

During this period, around 183,000 babies were born, approximately 79,0000 immigrants arrived, and 51,000 people passed away.

At the time of the state's establishment, Israel's population numbered 806,000 people. Today, Israel's population is twelve times greater than at the time of the state's establishment.

More than 3.3 million immigrants have made Aliyah to Israel, approximately 1.5 million (43.7%) of whom arrived since 1990. Additionally, approximately 149,000 immigrant citizens have moved to Israel.

Israel's population is expected to number 11.1 million people in 2030, 13.2 million in 2040, and 15.2 million people on Israel's 100th Independence Day (2048).

The Golani Infantry Brigade has rebelled and is getting away with it because the IDF General Staff has surrendered its moral power to discipline its soldiers.
By Caroline Glick

(JNS) A group of soldiers from a company of Israel Defense Forces’ reservists in the Golani Infantry Brigade abandoned their posts at their training base in southern Israel on Tuesday and went home. The reservists revolted because they didn’t accept their battalion commander’s decision to replace their company commander with a company commander from the Paratrooper Brigade.

As Yediot Achronot’s military reporter Yossi Yehoshua reported, the last time that Golani experienced a mutiny of this dimension was in 2007. Back then, the top brass responded immediately, sentencing all of the soldiers to 56 days in jail.

This time, their commanders took their time responding and then hit them with a wet noodle. The soldiers were given suspended sentences and remanded to their base for a weekend.

The IDF’s decision to let the reservists off the hook for inexcusable behavior surprised no one. They had no choice. In February, a squadron of reserve Air Force fighter pilots shocked the country when they signed a letter announcing they would not serve in reserves so long as the Netanyahu government proceeded forward with its plan to place minimal limits on the powers of the Supreme Court and Attorney General. That is, they used their flight wings to extort the government and the public that voted it into office.

Rather than court-martial the pilots on charges of insurrection and sedition, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi and Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar opted to tolerate—and even coddle—the pilots in the hopes of getting them to relent

The same cushy fate greeted the other leftist reservists from technology, artillery and other units.

When in response, flight mechanics announced that they would refuse to service the planes of the leftist pilots who refused to defend the country for political reasons, Halevi and Bar recognized that they couldn’t discipline them without destroying what was left of the unity of force in the Air Force. And now, Golani has rebelled and is getting away with it because the IDF General Staff has surrendered its moral power to discipline its soldiers.

The implications of this situation are devastating. And they were anticipated. Halevi and Bar were warned repeatedly that if the General Staff permitted IDF service to be used as a political weapon, the generals would rupture the chain of command and compromise the unity of the force. But Halevi, Bar and their fellow generals went ahead and legitimized it anyway. And like Humpty Dumpty, once the egg of non-politicization of military service was broken, it was broken.

‘Good’ vs. ‘bad’ Israelis

It would be bad enough if military unity was the only casualty of the rebellion of Israel’s ruling class. But, of course, it isn’t. Moody’s Investor Services didn’t lower Israel’s credit rating, despite massive efforts by Israel’s economic elites to convince the rankings service to do so. And Silicon Valley Bank’s crash demonstrated just how stupid Israel’s high-tech moguls were when they called for Israel’s wealthy leftists to pull their money out of the country.

But statements by the likes of Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron, former prime ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak, former foreign minister Tzipi Livni, former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon, current opposition leader Yair Lapid, and dozens of retired generals and other members of the ruling class warning that Israel’s economy isn’t a safe bet and that Israel’s democracy is hanging by a hair did more to advance efforts by Israel’s enemies to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish state and mainstream anti-Zionism than any U.N. resolution or any boycott campaign ever could.

One of the most extraordinary aspects of their campaign to overthrow the government through insurrection and demonization is its international bent. In the past three months, Lapid, Barak, Olmert, Livni, Ya’alon and their powerful comrades have turned to Washington and other foreign capitals to convince them to boycott Israel. Last week, Lapid flew to New York and met with American Jewish leaders to mobilize them against the only democratically elected Jewish leadership in the world: the Netanyahu government. Lapid met with powerful lawmakers to draft them into the service of overthrowing the government. Three weeks ago, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called publicly for foreign governments to boycott the Israeli government.

This week, Ya’alon met with visiting Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. His goal was self-evident. The former hardline Likud minister who in recent years has undergone an ideological makeover and joined the radical left insisted three years ago that governing coalitions comprised of terror-supporting Arab Knesset factions are preferable to governments with Netanyahu and Likud. In recent months, like fellow former chiefs of general staff Barak and Dan Halutz, Ya’alon has called for soldiers and police to disobey lawful orders. In the context of his current positions, the only possible explanation for his meeting with Graham was that he and his comrades now seek to convince Republicans to hate Netanyahu and his voters as much as Ya’alon and his new friends hate them.[All three entered politics after retiring from the IDF and failed to get votes, ed.]

Back when he was first running for president in 2008, Barak Obama said, “I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt an unwavering pro-Likud approach to Israel that you’re anti-Israel, and that can’t be the measure of our friendship with Israel.”

Obama’s remarks were panned by Israelis and American Jews for the contempt they displayed towards Israeli democracy. Likud is a major political party in Israel that has been the ruling party in the country far more often than not for the past 45 years because it is aligned with the views of the majority of Israelis. So whether or not you like Likud, if you support Israeli democracy, then you are expected to respect the will of the Israeli people. At the most basic level, you cannot be pro-Israel if you view the lawfully elected leaders of Israel as illegitimate.

Obama’s view has long been shared by many in the Democratic elite. In 2011, former President Bill Clinton gave a racist taxonomy of Israeli society as the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual conference. Ignoring that the Palestinian Arabs rejected then—as they still reject today—any possibility of peaceful coexistence with Israel, Clinton blamed the bad, Netanyahu supporting Israelis for the absence of peace. Clinton explained that Israelis need to be divided into two groups: the good “pro-peace” Israelis and the bad “anti-peace” Israelis.”

By Clinton’s telling, “The most pro-peace Israelis are the Arabs; second the sabras, the Jewish Israelis that were born there; third, the Ashkenazis of longstanding, the European Jews who came there around the time of Israel’s founding.”

As for the bad Israelis, the former president and husband of the then-secretary of state, explained: “The most anti-peace are the ultra-religious who believe they’re supposed to keep Judea and Samaria, and the settler groups, and what you might call the territorialists, the people who just showed up lately and they’re not encumbered by the historical record.”

Back in 2008 and 2011, statements like Obama’s and Clinton’s were a cause for rancor, or at the very least, uncomfortable throat clearings among Israeli leaders on the left, and among liberal American Jews. But today, their contemptuous views of Israeli society are not merely accepted as legitimate. They have become the rallying cries of the Israeli ruling class that works with the Democrats and liberal American Jews to demonize and delegitimize not only Netanyahu and his government, but the majority of Israelis who voted them into office.

President Joe Biden has shown through his policies and statements on Iran, the Palestinians, Jerusalem, progressive anti-Semitism and a host of other issues of strategic importance to Israel that his Middle East policies are predicated on ideological positions that are hostile to Israel’s core national and strategic interests. Under normal circumstances, Biden’s hostile posture would place him in an uncomfortable position vis-à-vis the overwhelming majority of American Jews who are pro-Israel.

But with the likes of Lapid, Barak, Olmert, Ya’alon and their many partners demonizing the government and calling for American Jews, Democrat and Republican lawmakers and the Biden administration to boycott the government, Biden’s effective declaration of Netanyahu persona non grata last month went over with barely a word of protest among American Jewish leaders. He was applauded by Israeli leaders.

In this week’s “Caroline Glick Show,” Tony Badran from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies explained that Iran’s decision to escalate its aggression against Israel in recent weeks is predicated in part on Biden’s declared shunning of Netanyahu. Biden’s statement was interpreted by Iran as an invitation to attack Israel at will.

Likewise, in recent weeks, the Iranian regime-controlled media have given banner headlines to statements by retired IDF commanders like Barak and Ya’alon and politicians like Lapid declaring that Israel is doomed. And rather than join Netanyahu when he warns Iran not to believe the propaganda, Lapid, Barak, Ya’alon and their elitist comrades blame Netanyahu for failing to protect the country from the forces their insurrection has emboldened.

This week, the son of the former Shah of Iran Reza Pahlavi made a historic visit to Israel. He participated in the official Yom Hashoah ceremony at Yad Vashem. He visited the Western Wall. He went to a desalination plant and spoke of the assistance Israel can offer a post-ayatollah Iran that will seek to repair the environmental devastation the regime has inflicted on the land.

Rather than praise Netanyahu and Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel who hosted Pahlavi, leftist commentators attacked them and Pahlavi. Former ambassador Daniel (“Danny”) Shek panned Pahlavi and Netanyahu for hosting him. In an interview on i24 News, Shek said the son of the former monarch “is not a force to be reckoned with” and that “Israel has nothing to gain from him.” Parroting Iranian regime propaganda, Shek insisted that no one in Iran supports Pahlavi.

Maariv columnist Yossi Melman attacked the government even more forcefully calling it “stupid” for hosting Pahlavi and inviting him to attend the Yad Vashem ceremony. Parroting the pro-Iran anti-Israel lobby in Washington, Melman wrote, “It’s counter-productive to topple the terrible regime.”

Why? Because.

Other members in good standing of the Clinton’s “pro-peace” Ashkenazi, sabra, Likud-bashing club joined the chorus of elitists standing with the Iranian regime and pillorying Netanyahu for hosting Pahlavi and Pahlavi for not hating Israel and Netanyahu.

With our ruling class in full revolt, Israel’s most important institutions—first and foremost, the IDF—are reeling. Our ability to defend ourselves on the battlefield and in diplomatic circles is constrained as never before. With our elites declaring our government illegitimate, and lobbying American Jews and politicians to boycott our leaders and reject the morality of the public that voted them into office, the government must fight against our enemies, against anti-Semitism, against BDS campaigns and anti-Israel propaganda machines with both hands tied behind its back, its mouth gagged while hopping on one foot. This situation is unsustainable.

As we approach Remembrance Day for Fallen IDF Soldiers and our 75th Independence Day next week, we must find a way to restore sanity and a sense of common destiny to our national life. We don’t have a spare country. Our ruling class needs to return to its senses and remember this obvious fact.

Israel’s protests are now crossing sacred red lines
The battle is existential and reflects a similar struggle in the West.
By Melanie Phillips

Israel’s three-month-old protest movement, which has repeatedly brought tens of thousands into the streets, is now crossing an increasing number of red lines.

There are serious anxieties that protests will disrupt next week’s Remembrance Day for Fallen Soldiers and Independence Day ceremonies.

At a Holocaust Remembrance Day synagogue service this week, anti-government participants forced Likud MK Boaz Bismuth to leave after they shouted at him to get out and started to become physically violent.

The leader of the opposition, Yair Lapid, announced that because the government had “divided society,” he would boycott the traditional torch-lighting ceremony that ends Memorial Day and opens Independence Day.

It was hitherto unthinkable that Israelis could desecrate those three sacred days. It was similarly unthinkable for soldiers of the IDF to refuse to serve their country, as did a group of elite Air Force pilots in protest against the government.

Even the memory of the Shoah is being traduced. On an El Al flight from Tel Aviv to New York on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the pilot announced, “Things like [the] Holocaust are potentially carried [out] in a dictatorship, and we are fighting in Israel to remain a democratic country.”

On the same day, in another obscene equivalence, a ceremony at the Mateh Asher Regional Council displayed pictures from the Holocaust alongside photographs from the protests.

It should be apparent to rational observers that this has gone way beyond the issue of judicial reform. That particular agenda is now all but dead in the water. The government has retreated. Yet the protests are not only continuing but are becoming increasingly disturbing.

This is because judicial reform is a flashpoint for profound divisions that have previously escaped attention but have now erupted.

The Israeli protests are being fed by several different agendas. Some people oppose the judicial reforms because they believe the judiciary provides the only check on political power. Some want to bring down Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Some are frightened by religious or nationalist extremists in the government.

The deeper reason, one that connects all of the above, is secular Israel’s onslaught against Jewish religiosity in the public square.

For this, religious leaders bear significant responsibility. The reformist Orthodox Rabbi David Stav has warned that the extremism of the religious Zionist bloc has caused a dangerous rift in Judaism and Israeli society.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “some of our leaders, elected officials and rabbis speak in a tone that frightens many people in Israeli society—and rightfully so.”

However, secular Israelis are intolerant of all Orthodox religious observance. When a Jewish prayer service was held in Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Square to celebrate Passover, the city’s Deputy Mayor Reuven Ladyansky attacked it as a “scandal” and demanded that “the organizers be fined in the most severe way possible” because they had separated men from women.

In Tablet, Liel Liebovitz reported that one of Tel Aviv’s protest organizers told him: “We’re here because we want this to be a normal state, you understand? Just like the United States or France or Germany. We don’t want this country to be taken over by those fanatics with their beards and their religion.”

As Rabbi Stav observed, many religious Israelis are now afraid to wear their kippah at their workplace because the “forceful and violent” rhetoric from secular Israelis has made the atmosphere so toxic.

Obviously, this tumult reflects the ambiguity over national identity that’s remained unresolved since Israel’s rebirth in 1948. Was the new Jewish state to be a recovery of Judaism’s ancient religious calling, or would the “new Jews” who replaced religion with secular values repudiate that calling?

These secular Israeli “New Jews” view themselves and their country as no different from other peoples or countries. That’s why they sign up to the universalist principles promoted by the “human rights”-driven judiciary. The erosion of the judiciary’s power is therefore intolerable.

But Judaism, the most particularist of creeds, stands in direct opposition to universalism.

Judaism created the nation-state that universalism seeks to destroy. Jewish human rights are created from the network of duties that form a civilized community and nation. Modern, secular “human rights” have no such prior network of duties and instead divide people into groups warring for power.

Jews can never be the same as other peoples. Israel, like the Jewish people, is unique. If it tore up its ancient identity, it would tear up the reason for its existence as a Jewish state.

In America, liberal Jews have embraced secular ideologies inimical to Judaism. As a result, Jewish identification is dwindling and America’s Jewish community is being inexorably reduced to a small rump of the truly observant.

A similar process is happening more broadly in the West. For decades, it has been subjected to a sustained onslaught on its cultural inheritance of laws, morality and traditions based on the Hebrew Bible, in an attempt to replace them with supposedly universal principles intended to bring about the brotherhood of man.

This has both eroded the West’s internal cohesion and undermined its defenses against the enemies of civilization. Western liberals deem these enemies victims of the powerful, and thus excuse their violence and other misdeeds.

These liberals believe that if they are nice to their enemies, their enemies will lay down their weapons and chant “kumbaya.” That’s why U.S. Democrats grovel to the genocidal fanatics of Iran and pressure Israel to kowtow to the Palestinian Arabs, incentivizing their agenda of exterminating the Jewish state.

This attitude also dominates Israel’s military and official classes, among whom the “Oslo” mindset—which held that the Palestinian Arabs will end their aggression if offered a state of their own—still endures despite the destruction of that fantasy.

Of course, when rockets start flying from Gaza or Lebanon, the IDF responds appropriately. But in the daily war of attrition by Palestinian Arabs in the disputed territories of Judea and Samaria, Israeli soldiers are told to enforce “normal life” for the Arab residents.

So, instead of doing everything possible to save the lives of Israeli citizens, the soldiers refrain as far as possible from any action that may disrupt normal Arab life.

Unless soldiers endorse this mindset, they come up against a promotional glass ceiling. That’s an important reason why so many senior officers have such liberal views.

This amounts to the same unadmitted but devastating cultural pressure that exists in Western universities and other cultural institutions and ensures that anyone who dissents from prevailing liberal shibboleths is pushed out.

It is impossible to understand the tumult in Israel without understanding that it is a rerun of a battle that goes back to the earliest days of the Jewish people—the titanic struggle between paganism and Jewish monotheism; between universalism and Jewish particularism; between Jewish Hellenists and those desperately defending Mosaic law against the manifold seductions of Greek culture.

The battle over Greek Hellenism fatally undermined the Jews’ defense against their enemies and led to their expulsion from ancient Israel. A direct line can be traced from today’s Western progressives through the 18th century Enlightenment all the way back to the ancient Greeks.

The current onslaught against biblical values and their replacement by secular and even pagan ideologies is sacrificing the West on the altar of identity politics, moral relativism and the retreat of reason.

Israeli secularists are prepared to bring Israel to its knees in order to be like the West at the precise point that the West is going down the tubes.

It’s often said that the Jewish community is the canary in the cultural coal mine. What’s happening in Israel is that the canary is now fighting off an adder it hadn’t noticed was coiled up inside its cage.

The fate of the Jewish canary should be of acute concern to the West, to which that adder belongs.

Teens face only misdemeanor charges — of criminal trespassing — after crashing stolen car, killing infant in Chicago

Two teenage boys are facing only misdemeanor charges after they allegedly stole a car and crashed it into another vehicle, killing a 6-month-old baby in Chicago last week.
The boys, ages 17 and 14, were each charged with just one misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing in the deadly April 16 crash in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The teens were driving in a stolen Hyundai when they slammed into a Ford pickup truck at an intersection of West Washington Boulevard and North Kostner Avenue shortly after 5 p.m., according to cops.

The 6-month-old boy, Cristian Uvidia, died in the hospital following the crash.

His 34-year-old mother and two sisters, ages 15 and 7, were each injured and treated at a local hospital, ABC 7 reported.

The infant’s skull was fractured in the crash, according to a GoFundMe page created for the family.

“He suffered from an impact that fractured his skull, causing his brain to swell and eventually killing him,” Annelisse Rivera wrote. “We are devastated, and we are broken. We will miss his sweet smile, as he was a joy to everyone that he met.”

The teens were reportedly driving a stolen vehicle when they crashed into the family's pickup truck on April 16. Charges against the teens could be upgraded after police complete their investigation.

As of Sunday evening, a Chicago police spokesperson said no further charges have been brought against the teen boys.

Rivera called the misdemeanor charges “disheartening” in an interview with Fox 32 Chicago.

“Your however-minutes-long joyride ruined our life completely,” she said.

Two other teenagers were also inside the car, but have not been charged.

The stolen-car crash was just one recent instance of juveniles becoming involved in criminal activity in the city.

Recent “teen takeovers” have created chaos in the windy city as hundreds of teens mob Chicago streets and clash with cops there.

We’re now learning that his campaign helped gin up the disinformation about Hunter’s laptop.
The Editorial Board

The House Judiciary and Intelligence committees released portions of a deposition transcript exposing the origins of the statement from 51 former U.S. spies declaring that Hunter’s laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” The admission came from Mike Morell, former deputy CIA director under Barack Obama. The letter served its political purpose of giving the media and Joe Biden the opening to dismiss the New York Post’s laptop scoop as Russian disinformation. (The letter and the names of the 51 signers can be read nearby.)

It turns out the Biden campaign was behind the letter. Mr. Morell told Congress under oath that he received a phone call from Antony Blinken on Oct. 17, 2020—three days after the Post published emails from Hunter’s laptop. Mr. Blinken was then a senior adviser to the campaign and is now secretary of State.

According to a letter the House committees sent to Mr. Blinken last week, Mr. Morell said the call was “couched as simply gathering Morell’s reaction to the Post story,” yet it “set in motion the events that led to the issuance of the public statement.”

Committee question to Mr. Morell: “Prior to [Mr. Blinken’s] call, you—you did not have any intent to write this statement?”

Mr. Morell: “I did not.”

The letter says Mr. Morell also “explained that the Biden campaign helped to strategize about the public release of the statement.” Mr. Morell says he then contacted an aide to former CIA director John Brennan to say “the Biden campaign wanted the statement to go to a particular reporter at the Washington Post first and that he should send the statement to the campaign when he sent the letter to the reporter.”

Mr. Morell acknowledged he had two goals with the statement: to “share our concern with the American people,” and to “help Vice President Biden” “win the election.”

All of this took place shortly before the final presidential debate, and Mr. Biden pointed to the Gang of 51’s statement that his campaign helped to generate as proof that the Hunter laptop was phony: “Look, there are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what this, [President Trump is] accusing me of is a Russian plan. They have said that this has all the characteristics—four—five former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he’s saying is a bunch of garbage!”

Mr. Morell told the committee that following the debate, Biden campaign chair (and now senior White House aide) Steve Ricchetti called to thank him for the statement. No doubt. The Biden campaign had in essence generated its own disinformation, marshaling the authority of supposedly nonpartisan intelligence veterans to discredit a story that was accurate about laptop emails that were authentic.

The committees are seeking more information from Mr. Blinken about the Biden campaign’s role, and the public deserves answers. Statement signers like former Obama director of national intelligence James Clapper have since admitted they had no evidence to make their disinformation claims, and Mr. Clapper claims the media “distorted” their views. No, the press did precisely what Mr. Blinken and the 51 spooks wanted: Use their letter to discredit the Hunter laptop and the information on it that raised questions about the Biden family business with foreigners.

Intelligence officials, former as well as current, have a particular duty not to spread disinformation because they have access to classified information that the public can’t check. The press overwhelmingly went along with the false Biden campaign claims because it wanted Mr. Biden to win. These 51 officials have done more to damage the credibility of the CIA and FBI than anything Donald Trump has said. Ditto for the complicit media.

Five injured in terrorist ramming attack in Jerusalem
Pedestrians run over by vehicle near Jerusalem's Mahane Yehudah open-air market. One person in very serious condition.
  Apr 24, 2023 at 4:26 PM (GMT+3)

At least five people have been injured in a ramming attack near Jerusalem's Mahane Yehudah market this afternoon (Monday).

The attack occurred on Kol Yisrael Chaveirim (Kiach) Street, near Davidka Square.

The suspected attacker has been shot and neutralized by security forces. He has been identified as Khatem Najma, a 39-year-old resident of eastern Jerusalem.

One man of about 70 is reportedly in very serious condition, while a woman is in moderate condition, and two other victims are in light condition.

The victims were all taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem and Shaarei Tzedek hospitals.

Amir Pardo, an eyewitness to the attack, told Israel National News - Arutz Sheva: "I saw the car coming quickly to the intersection. It ran over a man and a woman who fell to the ground. The driver tried to reverse and enter the market and a policeman who was there started shooting at him and hit him."

MDA EMT Eli Raymond said: "I was with the MDA Medicycle in Jaffa St. when the report was received at MDA's 101 Emergency Call Center, and I was on scene in seconds. There was a large disturbance at the scene, I saw the five victims near the vehicle, with one unconscious with multiple injuries, and the other four victims were conscious. We treated them and they were evacuated to Jerusalem hospitals by MDA Mobile Intensive Care Units."

MDA Paramedic Nadav Taieb added: "There was a large disturbance at the scene, and we were led to a 32-year-old female who was lying on the sidewalk with a serious leg injury. We provided medical treatment including medication, wound treatment and immobilization of the broken leg, and evacuated her in moderate, stable condition to hospital.”

United Hatzalah volunteer EMTs Moshe Erblich and Eliyahu Avraham said: "We were close by when we heard cries for help after five pedestrians were struck by a car. We provided initial treatment to the injured at the scene, who were in serious, moderate, and light conditions. United Hatzalah transported a number of them to the hospital. Members of United Hatzalah's Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit are still treating a number of people for emotional shock."

Following the attack, the light rail in Jerusalem ceased operations between the Damascus Gate station and the central bus station.

Richard,

Tucker Carlson just called attention to the MASSIVE revelation that the Biden campaign organized the letter of 51 former intelligence officers who LIED about the Hunter Biden laptop being “Russian disinformation.”

“...it was a lie that came from Joe Biden and Secretary of State Tony Blinken. That was election interference.”

-Tucker Carlson

Joe Biden stood on that debate stage with me and LIED to every single American citizen when he told the nation that his son’s laptop depicting all of his many crimes was fabricated by the Russians.

This is the Democrats’ 2024 playbook.

They will LIE about the border, they will LIE about inflation, they will LIE about our national security, and they will LIE about crime.

And they’ll collude with their Deep State “ex-CIA” operatives to cook up any report they need to back up their lies.

This is un-American. These are Soviet tactics. But what else can you expect from a party that just tried to imprison its leading opponent?

Tucker Carlson Leaves Fox News, Effective Immediately

By Jack Phillips

Fox News on Monday confirmed that it “parted ways” with popular primetime host Tucker Carlson, offering no explanation why.

“FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” said a news release from the news channel.

The release said that his departure from the network is effective immediately. Carlson’s last show was on Friday, April 21. It means that Carlson will not have the opportunity to host a final Fox News show and bid his viewers farewell.

In Carlson’s place, “Fox News Tonight” will air starting at 8 p.m., a time slot that Carlson has held since April 2017. That will be “an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named,” said Fox’s news release.

On Twitter, Carlson did not make any reference to his departure from the channel.

Other details about Carlson’s departure were not made public. The Epoch Times has contacted a Fox News spokesperson for additional comment.

For years, Carlson’s show had been among the most popular in all of cable television, often generating more than 3 million viewers per episode. In March, “Tucker Carlson Tonight” drew the highest audience on cable television, averaging  3.251 million viewers per show, according to Nielsen data.

His ratings also spiked in early March when he aired never-before-seen footage of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach, the Nielsen numbers show. In one of the clips aired on his show, it appeared to show “Q Shaman” Jacob Chansley being escorted by Capitol Police through the premises.

Carlson’s segments that were published on Fox News’s YouTube page would often generate millions of views each. For example, a recent post titled, “Tucker Carlson: The Biden admin is incentivizing bad behavior,” netted more than 600,000 views in two days.

Carlson joined Fox News in 2009, first working as a contributor. Between 2012 and 2016, he served as the co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend” before starting his primetime show a year later.

He soon became Fox’s most popular personality—eclipsing Sean Hannity, who comes on an hour later—after replacing Bill O’Reilly in Fox New’s prime-time lineup. Before Fox News, he appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS—and he also co-founded the Daily Caller, which was launched in 2010.

Last week, another popular Fox News host, Dan Bongino, announced via his podcast that he, too, is leaving Fox News.

“The show ending last week was tough. It’s not some big conspiracy theory, I promise you. There’s no acrimony,” Bongino said last Thursday. “We just couldn’t come to terms on an extension. That’s really it.” He added: “I really enjoyed myself there. They were good for me for ten years.”

“It’s a sad day. They did give me the opportunity to do one last show, I don’t want you to think they showed me the door,” he continued. “That’s on me, not on them, but I thought it was best to go this way for now.”

In a statement to several news outlets after Bongino’s departure, Fox News said: “We thank Dan for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.” The company did not explain why it was parting ways with Bongino, who was a former New York City Police Department official and U.S. Secret Service agent before entering the media business.

After it was announced Carlson would be leaving the network, Fox Corporation’s stock dropped about 4 percent by midday trading.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for developments.

America is exporting its worst ideas across the Atlantic

It’s hard to be taken seriously in today’s foreign policy establishment when talking about the harms of what is broadly referred to as “woke culture.” Russia’s expansionist war in Ukraine, the ascendance of totalitarian China, the ever-present risk of jihadist terrorism, and many other threats would seemingly leave little room to focus on the American culture war. However, foreign policy specialists are now beginning to recognize that this is in fact a problem worth paying attention to.

In an interview with Elle magazine in 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron said imported "woke culture" from the United States is "racializing" France and creating more division among minorities. That same year, France’s national education minister, Jean-Michel Blanquer, said: “People who claim to be progressive and who…distinguish people by the color of their skin are leading us to things that resemble fascism.” Today, Macron is acting to distance France from the U.S. in an effort to avoid becoming “America’s followers.”

Macron and Blanquer are far from outliers in being displeased with America’s peculiar culture wars spreading to their countries. With every trip I take to the EU– from Copenhagen to Lisbon and even Iceland– I increasingly hear the same thing: America’s internal problems are negatively affecting European countries. We are exporting our unique cultural conflicts to places that have entirely different histories and frameworks for how to think about difficult topics such as race relations.

The people I speak to in these countries  are incredulous as to how and why America has arrived at this contentious cultural moment. The American citizenry is becoming increasingly divided, and, thanks to the internet, we are successfully exporting this division to our international allies. It’s no wonder that leaders who are concerned with maintaining stability in their countries would try to distance themselves from this cultural influence.

One of France's leading magazines, Le Spectacle Du Monde, ran a cover story in 2021 titled "The Suicide of America." The magazine blamed America's retreat from Afghanistan on a “woke dictatorship" and questioned whether the American empire was collapsing. Not only might America be collapsing, but we might also be taking down significant swaths of European countries with us. The longer we cling to hyper-polarization and sensational “social justice” ideas (or wokeness, for lack of a better term), the more likely we are to abdicate our position as a world leader, and the less likely our allies— and more importantly, our enemies, such as Russia and China—are to take us seriously.

If we value our reputation as a world superpower, we need to be taken seriously by the rest of the world. In order to be taken seriously, we must effectively counter extremism at home. Two clear actions we can take are to invest in organizations that combat polarization, and to promote  education for young Americans that gives them a comprehensive view of history and America’s place within the global community.

We must reject extremism in every form. Whether it is wokeism, far right authoritarianism, or religious fundamentalism. America once represented a beacon of hope and democracy, and it’s not too late to return to that. The time to right the ship was years ago, but we’ve arrived at a critical moment in which we have a choice to make: continue down the path of extremism and watch the American experiment become consigned to the dustbin of history, or do the hard work of uniting the American people, and by default, our international allies, around principles of freedom, democracy, and decency.

Too lucid for liberals, who are consumed by hysteria and wokeness:
