Honest Reporting Refutes. Time Will Tell.

From Israel: VERY URGENT: See It as It Is!!

This may be my last posting before seder next week. And so here I wish everyone who is observing a Pesach kasher v’sameach

Credit: Sevivon

Again, I assure my readers that I read your messages; I simply do not have time to respond to them all.

~~~~~~~~~~
It has become increasingly clear to me that those opposing judicial reform have labored mightily to lend the impression that they represent the Israeli people, or a good majority of them at any rate. They come out for demonstrations in impressive numbers and make a good deal of noise.
And then, then the elitist leftists who head various organizations and agencies make policy decisions that make it seem the whole organization or agency is on board, when that is not the case at all.
~~~~~~~~~~

The right-wing in Israel has been too quiet during this time. This must change without delay. People everywhere must be made aware of the tide of public opinion within the electorate that stands against the leftist positions.

~~~~~~~~~~
And so, dear friends, once again I urge you to read this through and circulate as widely as possible!!
~~~~~~~~~~

I want to start with something that both shocks and infuriates. Although, if we consider who is at the center of this story, we should not be shocked at all.

The title of the story: “Ehud Barak Explains his Plan to Take Down Israel’s Elected Government.”

Barak, a long-time leader in the Labor Party, held the position of prime minister from 1999 – 2001; his major policies were abysmal failures.

Credit: JPost

On Monday, Barak was in London and gave an interview at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), during which he spoke of a counterrevolution that is succeeding in Israel. Only 3.5% of the population is needed he says, if they will persist with boycotts, civil disobedience and protests in order to win. This is bottom up, while the government operates legally from the top down.

They already have 3.5% after only three months, and he says, “We will win. I am positive of it.”

See the video in which he makes these statements here:

And then, my friends, circulate this everywhere. He must be exposed.

As I am writing, there is a massive rally in Tel Aviv in favor of judicial reform. Reporting is that there are tens of thousands voicing their support for judicial reform in this “Freedom March.”

I share a stunning and heartening message put out on Tuesday by a large group of Air Force ground crews addressing the refusal of some few hundred reserve pilots to report for duty because of the judicial reform. This, too, paints a very different picture from the one leaders of the left-wing demonstrations would have us believe.

It was sent to Air Force Commander General Tomer Bar, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, but was addressed to the pilots (emphasis added):

“To make your aircraft useable, we work day and night, at every hour…

“When you climb into the aircraft with your flight gloves, our hands are wounded and freeze to death from the aircraft’s cold metal.

“All these years, we carried with pride the maintenance and arming of the aircraft. And we were the best soldiers we could be, even if we didn’t, like you, pass the flight school selections. But we always felt first-class [grade], together, for the people of Israel and the State of Israel.

“Today, after you have clarified that our vote is not equal to your vote, we are feeling second-class [grade]…

“And we’ll tell you a secret, our beloved pilots, each time we readied your aircraft it wasn’t really for you. It was for the people of Israel, the security of the State of Israel. Because we felt together, we thought we were one nation. We knew we were serving and loving the nation, unconditionally.

“And that’s the reason we will not be insubordinate like you, will not rebel or call for a military coup. We will maintain the necessary nobility of spirit and won’t allow political disagreements to enter our holiest sanctuary, the Israel Defense Forces.

“But we are calling on you to reverse your position at once, beg our forgiveness…

“And please, don’t tell us that with your insubordination you are saving democracy and defending the wholeness of the nation and the country because with your action you burned our votes. The army with all its soldiers must be kept at all costs outside any argument and dispute.

“And as to you, our dear commander, we call on you to be in charge…and to hastily create a fitting mechanism of deterrence and punishment, to guarantee that such things will never again happen for political reasons
.
“As to those who refuse to end their insubordination and will not beg our forgiveness, we demand categorically that their flight wings be removed – they are not fit to serve with us, the soldiers of the Air Force technical array, to the benefit of the State of Israel.”

Right on! I salute these ground crews.

“Pinchas Idan, Chairman of the Airports Authority Employees Committee, on Tuesday, admitted the strike he announced on Monday…was illegal. “I had to respect the chairman of the Histadrut…The Histradut is over us. But if I say that the strike was legal, I’d be lying.”

He suggested to passengers who had been affected: “Go to court, file a lawsuit against me and the Histadrut…”

~~~~~~~~~~
When last I wrote I spoke about the terrible turmoil in watching Netanyahu back down with regard to pushing the vote on the judicial reform now. I understood the idea that he was averting a civil war, and accepted the delay as long as it was just that: a delay until July and not a cancellation. It must go through by July.
However, as I track what is happening, there is a great deal that increases my unease: Negotiations are supposed to be taking place at the home of President Herzog, a mistake to begin with. But what I am reading is that Likud has one negotiating team, headed by Minister Ron Dermer. One negotiating team that apparently represents the full coalition, which has five parties – although it is called the Likud team. But the parties in the opposition each have their own team. Unless I am missing something, I see this as both very odd and very off-balance. I have yet to get answers.
What I picked up in the news today was that Herzog was meeting with the “judicial reform negotiators” from the Arab Knesset factions of Ra’am and Hadash-Ta’al. Said the representative of Hadash-Tal (emphasis added):
“We oppose the transparent attempts to derail the protests. Broadening the democratic space is a worthy goal, but we will not agree to go backwards. This is the hour to establish a full and equal democracy and not suffice with returning to the status-quo.
“The situation where the Arab public suffers from systemic discrimination and where millions of Palestinians live under occupation is not democratic at its core. Democracy needs to anchor equality in its Basic Laws, [and] cancel legislation that discriminates against the Arab public, led by the Nation-State Law.”
While not unexpected, this is very dangerous and very serious. What they are advocating is eliminating Israel as a Jewish State and making it a “state of all its citizens.” This must be followed carefully and fought fiercely.
Not sure all the above is truthful.  There are a lot of  Honest Reporting contradictions and the mass media like to place Israel in a bad light and lie all the time as do the anti-semitic nations in Europe.
 It's time again for the annual " Stella Awards"! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right?
That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy.
Here are the Stella's for this year:
 · SEVENTH PLACE
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son.
Start scratching!
    · SIXTH PLACE *
Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was smeone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.
 Scratch some more...
    · FIFTH PLACE *
Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish Keep scratching. There are more...
Double hand scratching after this one.
 · FOURTH PLACE *
Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun
 Pick a new spot to scratch, you're getting a bald spot.
· THIRD PLACE *
Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.
Only two more so ease up on the scratching..
 *SECOND PLACE*
Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000....oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. Go figure
Ok. Here we go!!
  · FIRST PLACE *
 This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down?
$1,750,000.
 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.
    If you think the USA court system is out of control, be sure to pass this one on.
Why Did the Biden Administration Oppose Israeli Judicial Reform?
by Jonathan S. Tobin
It didn't play a decisive role in the drama that unfolded in Israel as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to call a halt to his efforts to enact judicial reform. But the Biden administration's willingness to involve itself in the push to oppose the measure was remarkable for two reasons.
The first is that, as The New York Times noted, Washington made no secret of its efforts to directly intervene in a domestic Israeli dispute in a manner that was almost unprecedented. The second was that the standard by which the administration seems ready to judge its Israeli counterpart is entirely hypocritical and would, if applied to Biden, categorize him as just as much of an "authoritarian" as Netanyahu. Or at least it would if those scurrilous accusations that have been hurled against the Likud-led government by its opponents—and dutifully mimicked by the international media, as well as many Democrats and American Jewish organizations—weren't entirely false.
But however unpersuasive or politically motivated, what the Times termed a "U.S. pressure campaign" to shelve the reform legislation had nothing to do with a belief in the virtues of Israel's current judicial system.
If they favor the continued rule of what amounts to a juristocracy in the Jewish state, it is for the same reason that most of the people who jammed the streets of Israel's cities or sought to undermine its economy and national defense did. They see the maintenance of an unaccountable court with virtually unlimited power as the only way to maintain the Israeli left's political power even when they lose elections, as Netanyahu's opponents did only a few months ago.
Even more to the point, Washington is as determined as the anti-Bibi resistance not just to stop judicial reform but to oust a democratically elected government by any means possible. Biden's interest in toppling him is disconnected from any purported concern about Netanyahu's alleged shortcomings. What the White House and State Department want is a more pliable Israeli prime minister who will keep quiet about the nuclear threat from Iran and who can be intimidated into not acting to forestall that deadly threat to Israel's existence.
As to the substance of the American critique of the effort to reform Israel's judiciary, as a JNS report described, the hypocrisy of Biden's stand is epic in nature.
Democrats and their liberal Jewish supporters are vocal critics of the U.S. Supreme Court because of its current conservative majority and its willingness to enforce constitutional limits on the power of the state. Biden and the Democrats have been assailing the independence of the court for years with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) even issuing warnings against its conservative members that liberals would have labeled as incitement to violence, if not criminal threats, had they been uttered by a Republican.
Equally hypocritical is their talk about Netanyahu being at fault for not seeking a national consensus before trying to enact change with a narrow parliamentary majority. That never stopped Democrats from advancing ideas that they considered to be progressive innovations, like Obamacare, with no consensus, compromise or broad congressional support. Nor did it stop liberal American Jews from supporting the disastrous Oslo Accords or the disengagement from Gaza, which were pulled off with even less support in the Knesset than Netanyahu can boast.
As for behaving like a dictator, Biden's predilection for governing by executive order—of which his canceling of student loan debt is just one outstanding example—even when his diktats are obviously contrary to the Constitution or existing laws makes anything Netanyahu might attempt look like child's play. Biden bristles at the ability of American courts to strike down some of his more egregious initiatives, even when they do so on the basis of settled law. But his administration apparently thinks that when Israel's Supreme Court strikes down Netanyahu's efforts to govern—on the basis of no law and only on the judges' subjective ideas about what is "reasonable"—it's a great idea.
The same applies to the critiques of judicial reform that emanated from establishment Jewish groups like the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League. And though the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations is supposed to speak for a consensus of all Jewish groups and act in defense of Israel rather than specific political factions inside the country, it joined the liberal groups in praising Netanyahu's surrender to the mob. It then had the chutzpah to laud the protesters, who sought to sabotage the country to get their way without even any attempt at balance by treating supporters of the government and reform, who clearly outnumbered the critics at the ballot box last November, as equally praiseworthy.
A number of the leaders of those groups may share the fear and contempt for Israel's right-wing and religious voters that animate many, if not most, of the protesters who believe that any government that isn't dominated by the left is somehow illegitimate. But they also understand that the hyperbolic claims that Netanyahu and advocates of judicial reform seek to impose a dictatorship or a Torah state is pure fiction.
Yet it isn't an accident that arguments being floated about the issue of Israeli judicial reform from American sources are so weak and unpersuasive. What Biden and his supporters want in Jerusalem isn't so much an all-powerful Supreme Court—though they are pleased if it can hamstring Netanyahu's attempt to govern, as it has continually attempted to do—but anything that can help oust the prime minister.
The Biden foreign-policy team, largely made up as it is of Obama administration alumni, bears a grudge against Netanyahu. The eight years of bickering between Washington and Jerusalem centered on former President Barack Obama's futile efforts to undermine Netanyahu and force him to make concessions to a Palestinian Authority that had no interest in peace. They reached a peak in 2015 during Netanyahu's campaign to try and halt Washington's push for appeasement of Iran, which led to the dangerous nuclear deal that year that enriched and empowered the Islamist regime.
While Biden seems to have wisely disabused himself of myths about the Palestinians wanting peace, he is still interested in realigning U.S. Middle East policy away from support for allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia in favor of a rapprochement with Iran, even if his efforts to revive the nuclear deal have flopped.
Under the current circumstances in which Iran has shown its contempt for the Americans, Biden is still eager to avoid any confrontation with Tehran over the fact that, thanks to the Democrats' appeasement policy, it is fast approaching the status of being a threshold nuclear power. As one of Biden's most loyal aides—chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley—recently made clear, the administration is now willing to tolerate Iran having nuclear weapons as long as they are not going to publicly flaunt them.
This attitude isn't just unacceptable to all of Israel's major political parties. It constitutes a grave threat to the security of the Jewish state that no Israeli prime minister could reasonably be expected to tolerate. But there is a big difference between Netanyahu and someone like opposition leader Yair Lapid, whom Biden hopes will soon return to the prime minister's office. As the multi-party coalition that ruled Israel from June 2021 to December 2022—led in part by Lapid—demonstrated, no one other than Netanyahu has the guts to confront the Americans, even over an existential threat like Iran. Biden knows that if the current government survives, it will present a formidable challenge to the disgraceful policy that Milley articulated.
So while there is nothing new about American governments seeking to intervene in Israeli politics, the brazen nature of Biden's attack on Netanyahu says nothing about the virtues of judicial reform. It does, however, speak volumes about how much the administration wants an Israeli government that won't cause trouble over Iran.
IRS visited Twitter Files journalist Matt Taibbi’s home same day as congressional testimony
By David Propper
An IRS agent stopped by the home of Twitter Files journalist Matt Taibbi the same day of his congressional testimony on the weaponization of the government, according to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who’s demanding an explanation over the oddly timed visit.
Jordan sent a letter to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel and the Department of Treasury on Monday in hopes of getting to the bottom of why the federal agent appeared at Taibbi’s New Jersey home on March 9 and left a note, according to an editorial in The Wall Street Journal that cited the letter.
The note reportedly instructed Taibbi to call the IRS four days later.
When he did, an agent told him his 2018 and 2021 tax returns had both been rejected due to identity theft concerns.
Taibbi has been deeply involved in researching and reporting the Twitter Files — based off a trove of internal documents at the social media giant meant to expose unfair bias in the company’s past content moderation and the social media giant’s previous contact with government officials.
The journalist told Jordan’s committee about the IRS agent’s visit that occurred the same day he spoke to House members before the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government to testify on what he learned from the Twitter Files.
Taibbi gave the committee documents that indicate his 2018 return had been electronically accepted and the IRS never told him or his accountants there was an issue with it over the last 4¹/₂ years, according to the Journal.
His 2021 return was at first rejected, and then rejected again after he refiled, despite his accountants refiling with an IRS-provided PIN number, he said.
Taibbi said in neither case was it a money issue, and that the IRS actually owed him a “considerable” sum, the Journal said.
Taibbi made clear in a tweet Monday night he had no interest in commenting on the letter.
“For those asking, I don’t want to comment on the IRS issue pending an answer to chairman @Jim_Jordan’s letter,” Taibbi wrote. “I’m not worried for myself, but I did feel the Committee should be aware of the situation.”
Revelations about the IRS visit come after Taibbi and Democrats on the subcommittee butted heads during his hours-long testimony along with fellow Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger
Taibbi, a longtime Rolling Stone reporter, responded to a jab from Virgin Islands Rep. Stacey Plaskett at one point, listing his career accomplishments and saying, “I am not a ‘so-called’ journalist.”
Todd Bensman on Muslim Migrants on the U.S. Terror List Infiltrating the Southern U.S. Border
by Marilyn Stern
Todd Bensman is a Middle East Forum Writing Fellow, a Senior National Security Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and author of Overrun: How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. History, the 2023 follow-up to his earlier book, America's Covert Border War: The Untold Story of the Nation's Battle to Prevent Jihadist Infiltration. Bensman spoke to a March 20th Middle East Forum Webinar (video) about the escalating threat to America by Muslim migrants on the U.S. terror watch list infiltrating from the southern border. The following is a summary of his comments:
Liberals say the threat is exaggerated, while Republicans insist it is dire and widespread. But "the truth is really that there is a threat issue that has been addressed by the U.S. government and the Homeland Security enterprise" since 9/11. The fact that the Biden administration decided in April 2022 to post "known or suspected terrorist crossings" (KST) on its enforcement statistics website indicates that the threat of terrorist infiltration isn't exaggerated. The Customs and Border Patrol website (CPB.gov), which contains approximately five years' worth of statistics, posted ninety-eight apprehensions of "terrorist crossings at the southern border" in fiscal year 2022. So far, the count for the first four months of fiscal year 2023 is sixty-nine, "so we are on track to beat 2022's number in terms of terror watch listed migrants that are entering the country that are being apprehended."
The unprecedented surge of illegals infiltrating the U.S. includes an increasing number from a variety of Muslim countries, especially illegals on the FBI's Terrorist Screening Data Set (TSDS) watch list. Liberals dismiss the problem because infiltrators were apprehended, but they ignore the fact that there are 1.5 million "got-aways" the border patrol did not apprehend who are now in the U.S. interior, which has been a "deportation free zone" for the past two years. While information about the "got-aways" is scant, Bensman investigated further, and his findings expose the mounting concerns of security professionals tasked with protecting the border.
Bensman's earlier book, America's Covert War, described the U.S. protocol in dealing with apprehended migrants from Muslim majority countries. The FBI conducts an in-depth personal interview, and if the migrant does not clear a security check, the next step is deportation to the home country, or a third country, based on agreements with the U.S. However, the mass migration crisis currently underway has placed immense pressure on America's "covert border war" defenses, now overwhelmed by the migrant swarm, which our country's enemies are exploiting to their advantage by penetrating porous U.S. borders.
Bensman's current book, Overrun, investigates infiltration cases based on "confidential but not classified" internal government documents leaked by security professionals angered about the administration's failed southern border policy. There is the case of Lebanese born Venezuelan, Issam Bazzi, "flagged on a terror watch list," who illegally crossed into the U.S. in 2021 at the time that border crossings rose precipitously. The FBI's investigation discovered that Bazzi was involved in terror activities and recommended detention and deportation. Because Bazzi was overweight, ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) intervened and ordered him released "on grounds that he was at risk of catching Covid." Bensman's investigation found that Bazzi was released into the Detroit area, has not been apprehended, and is pursuing an asylum claim.
Another case involves a Yemeni on the U.S. terror watch list, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, who was about to cross into Texas when the Mexican authorities picked him up based on their access to the U.S. watch list. After an FBI investigation, Mexican authorities scheduled Ahmed for deportation to Yemen. The officers tasked with transporting Ahmed left him at the Transit Airport, and – far from being deported to Yemen – he instead made his way back to Mexico. Mexican authorities again apprehended him, but this time the Americans did not arrive, and the Mexicans released him. Bensman received the leaked BOLO (be on the lookout) alert for Ahmed as a "CBP category five" (designation for "terrorist organization affiliate") "got-away." Ahmed is still at large.
There is currently a prosecution underway in Ohio of Shihab Ahmed Shihab, a former member of al-Qaeda (AQ) who flew into the U.S. as an asylum seeker years ago. Shihab was indicted and arrested based on his plot to "import" four AQ/ISIS operatives to assassinate former President George W. Bush in Texas. Court records reveal that Shihab had already succeeded in bringing in two Hezbollah members. While there is "a lot of mystery still shrouded on that case," it is chilling to consider the got-aways America's border professionals have been unable to apprehend. There are 150 countries represented by the swell at the U.S. border, including migrants from "every country of the Middle East, Islamic countries of Northern Africa and South Asia, Pakistan, and all 'stan' countries."
Migrant numbers are so high that Bensman discovered a "Muslim-only" shelter that was opened in May 2022 in Tijuana by the Latina Muslim Foundation of San Diego. The shelter receives immigrants "from all over the Islamic world" and contains a mosque, serves Halal food, and has "separate facilities for men and women." It is located "two blocks from the wall" and, under the Biden administration's policy, the foundation provides the migrants "the ability to cross to get humanitarian parole and to be crossed, pre-legalized, through the ports of entry." The center's "selling point" is that they "conduct full security" background checks, but the Somalis, Syrians, and Afghan migrants at the shelter are from countries where background information is either unavailable or non-existent. Moreover, other migrants hail from Uzbekistan and Chechnya, and the Russians are "not doing background checks for us."
The problem is that this administration chose to decouple itself completely from enforcing any of those laws. And the administration has decided that it is going to make up its own rules and systems as it goes along.
Bensman's charge that the covert war is "faltering" is borne out by his video interview with Sonia Garcia, president of the foundation and the shelter's director. Garcia said the Biden administration has never contacted her about the people passing through her center. She has taken it upon herself to report cases of Islamic extremists/terrorists to the Mexican authorities who have removed the migrants in question from the facility.
U.S. border agents and officers are overwhelmed and undermined by the Biden administration's policies that almost guarantee "entry and stay" in the U.S. The Trump administration's procedures, such as the "Remain in Mexico" policy, reduced the crossings into the U.S. But the Biden administration has sought to discontinue these measures, and the Mexican government opposes restarting them. Talking points used by politicians to avoid the issue revolve around "the need for comprehensive immigration reform," but by punting, they deflect from the real issue. The U.S. immigration system is adequately equipped to defend, detain, and deport threats, fully supported by laws that are in place. "The problem is that this administration chose to decouple itself completely from enforcing any of those laws. And the administration has decided that it is going to make up its own rules and systems as it goes along."
With a divided Congress, the burden falls on litigation in the hope that the courts will rule against the administration's abrogation of its duty to protect its citizens. "And that's ultimately what it's about, that you have to just simply abide by the law. If an administration abides by the laws, it should deter the vast majority of this."
George Washington University Says an Investigation Cleared It of Anti-Semitism. Why Won't It Release the Report?
Professor Lara Sheehi tweeted: 'FUCK ZIONISM, ZIONISTS, AND SETTLER COLONIALISM.' That's OK by GWU.
Alana Goodman
George Washington University on Monday trumpeted the results of an investigation that allegedly cleared the university and Professor Lara Sheehi of anti-Semitism. But the school won't release the full report, penned by an outside law firm retained by the school, that it is claiming exonerates it.
The announcement comes in the wake of a civil rights complaint filed with the Department of Education arguing that Sheehi, whose Twitter feed is littered with claims like "Zionists are the most boldfaced assholes," created a hostile classroom environment for Jews and Israelis in her mandatory diversity course. GWU president Mark Wrighton said the law firm hired to investigate Sheehi's behavior, Crowell & Moring LLP, found "no evidence substantiating the allegations of discriminatory and retaliatory conduct."
The university's decision to bury the full report is eliciting blowback. StandWithUs, the anti-Semitism watchdog that in January filed the civil rights complaint against GWU on behalf of several students, is slamming the university for withholding the report.
"If the university wants its description of the results of the investigation to be taken seriously, it should release a full copy of the report, rather than the summarized 'findings' publicized by GW itself," said Jennifer Kutner, a spokeswoman for StandWithUs.
According to the university, there is "no evidence that [Sheehi's] discourse"—which included telling a Jewish student that it is "not your fault you were born in Israel," suggesting Zionism is racist, and alleging that Israelis use humanitarian work to whitewash their crimes—"crossed the line into anti-Semitic speech."
A spokeswoman for the school, Julia Metjian, told the Washington Free Beacon that the public will have to take George Washington University's word for it. "The confidential report has been carefully reviewed, and the summary of the findings the university released accurately represents what the university learned through the investigation conducted by Crowell & Moring," said the university. "In the interest of protecting the privacy of our students and faculty, the confidential report will not be released."
The school said that allegations about Sheehi's anti-Semitic statements were "largely inconsistent with the recording of the event or significantly decontextualized," but it did not say what context, if any, was missing.
The investigation was conducted by Crowell & Moring attorneys Laurel Pyke Malson and Sadina Montani, who have a background of representing universities and other employers against discrimination complaints, according to their online biographies. Malson says in her biography that her recent key representations include "Title IX litigation defending universities against claims brought by both complainants and respondents," while Montani's biography says she "represents employers in state and federal courts and before various administrative agencies, defending claims of race, sex, disability, and age discrimination."
StandWithUs is raising questions about some of the findings described by the university, including the assertion that none of the students interviewed by investigators remembered Sheehi being dismissive of anti-Semitism claims raised by Jewish students.
"This is patently untrue," Kutner told the Free Beacon. She also rejected GWU's claim that Sheehi's anti-Israel Twitter posts were "only briefly visible to the public."
"In reality, [Sheehi's] Twitter feed, including her blatantly anti-Semitic rhetoric, was visible to the public for many years," Kutner said. "It was only after StandWithUs filed its Title VI complaint that the virulently hostile and profane tweets were removed."
On Oct. 24, 2020, Sheehi posted: "FUCK ZIONISM, ZIONISTS AND SETTLER COLONIALISM using Palestinian lives as examples of their boundless cruelty and power."
In other posts, Sheehi advocated for throwing rocks at Israelis, celebrated attacks on Israelis during the Second Intifada, and denied that Hamas was a terrorist group.
"If you see this and STILL entertain for even a split second that Hamas is the terrorist entity, there is literally zero hope for you, your soul, or your general existence as an ethical human being in this world," she wrote on May 22, 2021. "There is no gray area here, I'm not sorry to report."
In August 2020, Sheehi described supporters of Israel as "the most boldfaced assholes" who "cry victim when you call them on their shit. Get fucked, you and your racist ass."
In October, she claimed that "Zionism is a form of fascist white supremacy."
In GWU's statement exonerating itself, the school said that it "understands how these tweets, viewed at face value, are offensive and hurtful to some" but that such comments are permitted under its social media rules.
"Although the tweets from what appears to be Dr. Sheehi's personal account do not violate GW's social media policy, the university strongly denounces the use of profane language directed at any group of people, including in private tweets," said the school.
GWU stands by Professor Lara Sheehi accused of anti-Semitism, berating Jewish students
By Hannah Grossman, Fox News
George Washington University is standing by its diversity professor after a complaint to the US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights alleged that she created a psychologically traumatizing class environment, which students said caused them to cry and go on antidepressants.
GWU released summary findings Monday of an internal probe on its clinical psychologist, Lara Sheehi, which found “no evidence that the discourse crossed the line.”
Sheehi, who teaches a mandatory diversity class, “took offense” and publicly berated a student for Islamophobia for using the term “terrorist attack,” said the original complaint, filed in January.
“We were demeaned, and she twisted our words to make us look like the problem, which is pretty classic anti-Semitism, scapegoating the Jew, gaslighting the Jew, making us seem like we’re the issue,” a student told the Daily Caller.
One student reported “crying” after Sheehi brought in a speaker who, the complaint said, justified violence against civilians in Israel.
According to the complaint, when a student told Sheehi they felt “unsafe in a program that would invite a speaker who endorsed violence against Israeli civilians and who, therefore, may celebrate the murder of her Israeli relatives. In response, Professor Sheehi called the student’s comment a ‘damaging Islamophobic anti-Palestinian’ comment and added that a stone is nothing compared to an army.’
“This has had a very real impact on myself and the other students,” a student told the Jewish Journal. “More than one of us has had to go on antidepressants as a result of this. I had to pause my part-time job, couldn’t keep food down, couldn’t sleep because this is really an assault on my identity in a class … It’s had a real physical and psychological impact.”
GWU did not offer comment when asked by Fox News Digital about the emotional damage alleged to have been caused to Jewish students by its clinical psychologist in the mandatory diversity class.
The students alleged Sheehi began to run a smear campaign against them after they complained about being subjected to anti-Semitism, the complaint said.
“She turned the faculty against the Jewish students by spreading lies about us and our conduct, she disparaged us in front of our classmates, calling us Islamophobes,” a student told the Algemeiner.
The students said they were subjected to “disciplinary proceedings” which “effectively silenced us.”
GWU denied any retaliation in its internal investigation.
StandWithUs, an Israel education group, blasted the university, stating, “The administration’s position that students who raise concerns about identity-based discrimination have ‘a deficiency in a skill or subject matter area’ is precisely what makes the process retaliatory here. Furthermore, to claim that this process, which could result in a permanent black mark on these students’ records and irreparable damage to their future careers, is neither discriminatory nor disciplinary is at best ignorant of reality and at worst intentionally misleading.”
Sheehi is being represented by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
They previously said Sheehi was “being wrongfully accused of discrimination and anti-Semitism” due to “a larger campaign that is politically and ethnically motivated against Dr. Sheehi because of her scholarship and political activism outside the classroom.”
“We understand that these claims would otherwise not have resulted in such an exaggerated and prejudicial response by [George Washington], nor would they have found traction in public opinion if Dr. Sheehi were not Arab and her scholarship and activism were not focused on Palestine. These slander campaigns, intended to silence dissenting voices, are rooted in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism, a form of racism that silences, excludes, erases, stereotypes, defames, and dehumanizes Arabs and their narratives.”
Biden Meddles in Israeli Politics
The Editorial Board
President Biden likes to say he’s rebuilding American alliances, but he sure is selective about it. Woe betide the ally who runs afoul of American progressive opinion. Then Mr. Biden gives you the frenemy treatment.
On Monday the Israeli leader announced a pause in pushing the controversial reform, saying he’d seek a national “consensus” on the subject. But Mr. Biden still chose to lecture the foreign leader about the matter.
“Like many strong supporters of Israel, I’m very concerned. And I’m concerned that they get this straight. They cannot continue down this road. And I’ve sort of made that clear,” Mr. Biden told reporters. “Hopefully the Prime Minister will act in a way that he is going to try to work out some genuine compromise. But that remains to be seen.”
So much for giving Mr. Netanyahu credit for reaching out to the opposition to seek a compromise. Mr. Biden also took a gratuitous shot at the Prime Minister by saying the Israeli leader wouldn’t be invited to the White House—“not in the near term.”
Mr. Biden had to know how that would play in Israel, where the public pays great attention to the words of an American President. Asked at the same event if he is “interfering” in domestic Israeli politics, Mr. Biden said, “We’re not interfering. They know my position. They know America’s position. They know the American Jewish position.”
What American Jewish position is that? As far as we can tell, American Jews are as divided as Israelis on the judicial reform. As for not interfering, Mr. Biden also said Tuesday, referring to the judicial reform and Mr. Netanyahu, that “I hope he walks away from it.” Mr. Biden can’t even seem to get his advice to the Prime Minister straight: compromise on it or abandon reform entirely?
Perhaps we’re expecting too much of an American President famous for his stumbles and incoherence. But Mr. Biden doesn’t have to meddle in Israeli domestic politics. He’s picking up the refrain from the American left that Mr. Netanyahu’s elected government is somehow a threat to Israeli democracy. But if we’ve learned anything in recent weeks, it’s that Israeli democracy is alive and well.
Mr. Biden’s intervention makes us wonder if his real goal is to stir more trouble for Mr. Netanyahu so his coalition falls. He may worry that the Prime Minister is increasingly focused on Iran’s progress toward becoming a nuclear power. And Iran is getting closer as it enriches uranium to ever higher levels, refuses to allow U.N. inspectors to look at suspect sites, and ignores international warnings.
But Mr. Biden has been mute about Iran’s nuclear progress—perhaps because it underscores the failure of his two-year effort to cajole Iran to redo the 2015 nuclear accord. His diplomacy has achieved nothing except give Iran more time to develop a bomb and forge tighter economic and security alliances with China and Russia.
Mr. Biden has already alienated our friends the Saudis, who are busy hedging their American bets by getting closer to the Chinese. The President also isn’t helping Israel, or U.S. security interests, by further roiling the domestic politics of America’s best remaining friend in the Middle East.
