Lessons of the energy crisis

American and European leaders haven’t learned them

Energy policy is national security policy. So when political leaders get energy policy wrong, they get national security policy wrong.

An obvious example: Germany for years eagerly increased its dependence on Russian oil and gas. German diplomats thought they were implementing a clever strategy: “We’re making Putin dependent on our money!”

Then, just over a year ago, Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine. Russian hydrocarbons stopped flowing to Europe. But it’s not imperialism alone that’s to blame for what Brenda Shaffer calls the world’s “worst energy crisis since World War II.”

A research faculty member at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a senior advisor for energy at FDD, she delivered a lecture on this topic last month at the Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In addition to relying on Russia for a strategic resource, she explained, German energy policy for almost a decade has aggressively promoted solar and wind power while disinvesting from hydrocarbons. This has led to “the collapse of many energy-intensive industries in Europe.”

President Biden has adopted similar policies. His Inflation Reduction Act has had no impact on inflation. Instead, it provides enormous subsidies for “renewables.”

The cost to taxpayers, according to a Goldman Sachs estimate, will be a stunning $1.2 trillion over 10 years – funds that will not, obviously, be available for strengthening national security at a time of intensifying threats and challenges.

Mr. Biden’s energy policy disregards a basic fact: For industrialized economies to function when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing, there must be what Dr. Shaffer terms a “baseload or a stable source of energy.” Currently, only hydrocarbons or nuclear power can provide that.

She notes that natural gas, “the cleanest of the fossil fuels with very little air pollution impact,” is also a significant input in fertilizers. Restricting the production of natural gas has raised the price of food. That’s good for no one and especially painful for the poor

Most Western leaders seem oblivious, nodding along as U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres insists that a “climate time-bomb is ticking.

That was his response to the most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which acknowledged: “Very high emission scenarios have become less likely but cannot be ruled out.”

Climate scientist Roger Pielke, Jr. noted that the same could be said of an extraterrestrial invasion. Should implementing policies to cope with Martians now be the West’s highest priority

Thanks to Mr. Guterres and other alarmists, 60 percent of people living in wealthy countries think climate change “is likely to bring an end to humanity,” as Bjorn Lomborg, president of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, recently wrote. “This is not only untrue,” he added, “it is also harmful because it makes people embrace bad policies.”

Mr. Lomborg has estimated that if every nation “fulfills every promise” made in the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, the reduction in temperature rise will be 0.17 degrees Celsius. That would make no difference whatsoever.

He adds: “To fulfill the promises made in the Paris climate accords, the United Nations says, annual reduction by 2030 would have to be eleven times what we managed to achieve when the world ground to a halt during the Covid lockdowns. That is hardly realistic.”

Meanwhile, Germany and other European nations have been buying and burning more coal – the most polluting hydrocarbon – to make up for the oil and gas they no longer receive from Russia.

China is building about one dirty coal-fired plant every week – more than the rest of the world combined. Pollution and CO2 emissions from those plants will vastly exceed any emissions reductions Americans and Europeans can possibly achieve.

China already accounts for more than a quarter of all global CO2 emissions. True, Beijing is also increasingly utilizing solar and wind power. But that’s to augment hydrocarbons rather than replace them – a sensible policy.

China’s rulers also know they will hugely benefit if a global energy system led by the U.S. – the world’s largest producer of hydrocarbons – transitions to one led by China – the dominant player in renewable technologies, rare earths minerals, and components used in the electric vehicles that the Biden administration is spending taxpayer dollars to bribe the auto industry to sell and consumers to purchase.

Those vehicles will require vast amounts of electricity that can’t be generated by renewables alone nor distributed adequately by an ageing and unreliable grid. Currently, only 3 out of 100 cars in California are EVs. Yet the state recently asked owners for “voluntary electricity conservation” because demand for electricity was exceeding supply. Want to bet that electricity conservation won’t be voluntary a few years from now?

This column began by pointing out that energy policy is national security policy. But, as Dr. Shaffer noted in her lecture, for many European and American leaders, energy policy has become instead “a subset of climate policy.”

The purpose is to virtue signal. That’s why you’ll see them boast that their policies “address” climate change. Anyone paying attention knows these policies won’t stop or even slow climate change.

The world has warmed by 1.1 Celsius over the last 150 years. Adapting to another degree or two of warming is doable at a reasonable cost. If we want to reduce pollution and carbon dioxide emissions there’s a simple way: utilize more natural gas and nuclear power. Why do most climate activists reject both energy sources?

Current American and European policy – attempting to eliminate hydrocarbons and force a transition to renewables – is weakening national security, causing serious economic dislocations, and making people poorer.

That’s the most important lesson of the energy crisis. European and American leaders are refusing to learn it.

According to the paper’s staff on the ground, the false rumors on social media “caused a stampede,” as the migrants “ran for miles” to reach “the front of the line.” The U.S. Border Patrol reacted by stating that the rumors were misinformation. The agency continued to enforce Title 42, the Trump-era rule allowing fast expulsion of aliens on public health grounds. Under it, citizens of Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Venezuela automatically get expelled back to Mexica if they cross the U.S. border illegally. “People should not believe smugglers or others claiming the borders are open,” U.S. Border Patrol chief Raul Ortiz wrote on Twitter to disprove the social media rumors. “The borders are not open, and people should not make the dangerous journey. Migrants making an unlawful entry are subject to expulsion and repatriation,” he added. The report points out that there have been other cases in which false claims on social media, likely launched by Mexican drug cartels, have tricked migrants into trying to storm the U.S. border, particularly in the El Paso area. One such instance occurred on March 12 when a group of illegal immigrants rushed a border bridge between Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso. As a result, the bridge was blockaded by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers in riot fear. Most of the migrants in the area have been stuck in Ciudad Juarez, a city of 1.5 million, for several months, trying to cross into the U.S. Many are awaiting asylum interviews with U.S. officials. “When you have families who have been waiting months to try to seek asylum … and they continue to have doors slammed in their faces — I think the desperation sets in,” commented Melissa Lopez, head of the Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services, before local station KTSM. The report notes that many “penniless” migrants are begging for money or washing car windows at crossroads, with Mexican officials turning “increasingly hostile to them.” Amid their roundups of the aliens, last week, migrants locked in a detention facility ignited mattresses to protest their potential deportation. One rocket struck a populated area in Sderot and eight were intercepted by Iron Dome. Fourteen rockets hit open areas inside Israel, nine fell short in Gaza and a dozen were fired in the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, said the military. The rocket that hit Sderot damaged a home but caused no injuries. In response, Israel Air Force jets hit more than 10 Hamas targets in the Palestinian enclave, including weapons manufacturing sites and attack tunnels. The military also struck Hamas assets in southern Lebanon. “The state of Lebanon is considered responsible for everything that happens in its territory, including the firing of rockets by Hamas. We will not allow Hamas to operate from Lebanon,” said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari on Friday morning. “The IDF is prepared to carry out its missions—the offensive activity tonight in more than one arena is a clear indication of this. In defense of BIBI.

The left in Israel, the international and American media, students on many U.S. college campuses and anti-Semites everywhere think they have arrived at the moment they have been hoping for ever since Benjamin Netanyahu won his first election as prime minister in 1996. Labor unions in Israel have gone on strike, Ben-Gurion Airport was forced to close, some members of the military are threatening to quit and some civilians are refusing to serve in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), all because Netanyahu is attempting to reform a judicial system that has been hostile to him, politically and personally.

On Monday, Netanyahu bowed to the pressure when he suspended his plan. He promised to “give a genuine opportunity for genuine dialogue. One way or another, we will bring about a reform that returns the balance that has been lost between branches of government.”

The motivation behind Netanyahu’s effort at judicial reform can be found in his autobiography, titled “Bibi.” In 2017, after demonstrators  showed up outside the home of then-Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, he acknowledged on TV that the charges the mob demanded Mandelblit impose on Netanyahu were “trivial” and “gossip.” Mandelblit opened a criminal investigation anyway.

“The first casualty of Mandelblit’s campaign,” writes Netanyahu, was Sara, the prime minister’s wife. “A disgruntled former employee who had been responsible for ordering food in the prime minister’s residence accused her of ordering in meals for official dinners from restaurants instead of using an in-house ‘cook’… Never mind that the ‘cook’ was actually a cleaning lady with limited cooking skills. Never mind that the expenditure on food in the residence skyrocketed during the former employee’s tenure and immediately sank after his departure. Never mind, too, that neighbors saw him regularly unpacking boxes of food at a relative’s home.”

Sara was charged with ordering the food and even though the case against her (and him) collapsed for lack of credible evidence, prosecutors kept it open.

Netanyahu gives titles to the other efforts the judicial system has used over the years to reverse the will of Israeli voters: “Failing to bring me down with double billing, pistachio ice cream, garden furniture, underwear and meal trays, my opponents realized that something more substantial was needed. Thus, in 2016, began the so-called ‘Submarine Affair.'”

The storyline, he writes, claimed he instructed the IDF “to purchase unneeded submarines and ships from (a) German corporation in order to benefit a company in which my cousin Nathan held minor shares.” He destroys that storyline in multiple paragraphs that must be read to be understood and appreciated. Outrage should follow, but the Israeli left just moves on to new charges.

The notoriously liberal Israeli media were all-in on virtually every charge against Netanyahu. It reminds of the American media’s favorable view of Russian collusion, the Steele Dossier and other frivolous and untrue charges against Donald Trump.

In all, writes Netanyahu, “the period spanning the police investigations, between June 2016 and December 2019, there were 561 news stories on prime-time television covering the investigations against me, 98 percent of them negative. This means one negative news story every other day for three and a half years!”

The delay in advancing his reform legislation brings risk. As The Wall Street Journal notes, “…if he delays the vote he risks the collapse of his coalition, as most of his allies are adamant on pushing ahead with the legislation.”

The delay will likely embolden Netanyahu’s political enemies, who have until now failed in every attempt to bring him down. He has been a force for good for Israel and the Jewish people. The same can’t be said for his political enemies.

As conflicts shift from armies and soldiers on physical battlefields to the digital realm focused on the civilian populace within a target nation, AI-driven psychological programming has emerged as a potent weapon with the potential to inflict lasting damage on a nation, akin to the devastating effects of a nuclear bomb.

In the context of fifth-generation warfare, where the focus lies on manipulating public opinion, exploiting societal vulnerabilities, causing internal strife in a target nation, shaping public perception, and influencing the belief systems of children and the perceptions of individuals within institutions and agencies, psychological programming becomes a critical component in this new era of digital-based psychological warfare.

As artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize industries and transform the way we communicate, work and live, the national security threats and ethical concerns associated with its misuse grow as well.

Foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming refers to the use of AI technologies by our foreign adversaries, such as the Chinese Communist Party, to manipulate, influence or control the thoughts, emotions and behaviors of individuals or groups of Americans. While this can sound like science fiction, it’s not and now we sit at a precipice attempting to get past our individual cognitive dissonance and face the threat.

We are short on time because this bomb has already detonated, and bigger threats are getting closer. This type of programming is being employed to undermine our way of life, manipulate public opinion, incite fear or hatred of each other, and even control political outcomes. It’s the silent and unseen tool that amplifies polarization and division within our society.

Given the increasing sophistication of AI technologies, it is crucial for the U.S. to establish comprehensive legislation to protect its citizens from harm caused by foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming.

Like a nuclear bomb, the impact of unchecked foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming is a devastating blow to American society; it’s far-reaching and deeply destructive. Both weapons can dismantle the very fabric of society, albeit through different means.

A nuclear bomb causes widespread physical destruction, while AI-driven psychological programming erodes trust, destroys families, fuels division and manipulates the public’s thoughts and actions to accept an unwanted new normal. The insidious nature of psychological programming may make it harder to detect, but the cumulative effects can be just as damaging to a nation’s social cohesion and stability.

One of the key similarities between a nuclear bomb and AI-driven psychological programming is their long-lasting impact.

In the case of a nuclear attack, the fallout includes radiation contamination, long-term health consequences and environmental damage. With AI-driven psychological programming, the fallout is subtler, invisible to most of the senses but equally persistent with long-lasting damage: the erosion of trust in institutions, the amplification of social divisions, and the manipulation of public opinion for the strategic gain of our adversaries.

Often, these effects cause the destruction of a nation from within. Either way, both are used to destroy a nation, and both are weapons that deserve our immediate attention.

This is the most effective weapon of the digital age. Fifth-generation warfare emphasizes non-physical dimensions, such as cyber and information warfare, to achieve strategic objectives. In this context, AI-driven psychological programming becomes the perfect weapon. It allows foreign actors to infiltrate the target nation’s digital sphere and exploit its vulnerabilities to achieve their goals.

By manipulating social media, spreading disinformation and employing micro-targeting techniques, adversaries can subtly shape public discourse and opinion without ever setting foot on the battlefield.

Have you wondered why everything seems so crazy, and it’s everywhere? Riots and cultural changes within institutions and agencies including the Department of Defense have all occurred through weaponized AI leveraged by foreign powers.

Another form of AI-driven psychological programming is the use of micro-targeted algorithms to personalize propaganda.

Social media and other platforms use AI algorithms to determine which content is displayed to an individual based on his online activity, behavior, vulnerabilities and associations. This can be used to influence an individual’s beliefs and attitudes by exposing them to only certain types of content and suppressing others.

Foreign entities use this method to spread false information or propaganda, cause anxiety and radicalization, or to manipulate public opinion. All of this is amplified by geo-tracking through cellphones and data collection.

Attributing responsibility for an AI-driven psychological attack is far more challenging than identifying the source of a nuclear bomb. The use of AI-powered deceptive techniques can obscure the origin of the attack, making it difficult to hold the responsible parties accountable. This anonymity enables aggressors to continue their campaigns with relative impunity.

Given the increasing sophistication of AI technologies and the potential harm caused by foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming, it is crucial for the U.S. to establish comprehensive legislation to protect its citizens from these threats with regulation that stops our adversaries but allows us to develop and deploy AI technologies that enrich our society.

Foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming has emerged as a formidable weapon in the arsenal of fifth-generation warfare. It wreaks havoc on the social, political and psychological fabric of our nation. Although the methods of attack differ, the devastation caused by foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming causes lasting damage to a nation’s core.

As we navigate this new era of digital-based psychological warfare, it is crucial to recognize the gravity of the threat and devise strategies to counter and mitigate the impact of foreign-born AI-driven psychological programming. The first steps are awareness of the situation and comprehensive legislation to protect American citizens from these nuclear-level threats.

By staying vigilant and proactive, we can preserve our way of life, social cohesion and the values we hold dear in the face of this new and insidious threat to our nation.

The indictment of a former U.S. President and declared candidate for president, is highly disconcerting, especially when one considers the nature of the so-called “charges.” I could not care less if Donald Trump gave “hush” money to a porn star back in 2016. What concerns me is why a misdemeanor is being upgraded to a felony offense by a New York City District Attorney. The same DA who downgraded felony offenses to misdemeanors and released violent criminals back onto the streets to continue assaulting innocent citizens.

America's Broken Windows

In criminology, the "broken windows" theory posits that visible signs of crime and civil disorder encourage only more serious crimes and antisocial behaviors.  A community that is perceived to permit vandalism, fare evasion, public intoxication, and petty theft will soon find that it must defend against rising rates of robbery, rape, and murder.  Tackling smaller forms of criminal mischief nips violent crimes in the bud.  Although Wyatt Earp and other Wild West lawmen put the theory into practice long before social scientists James Wilson and George Kelling wrote about it in the 1980s, Mayor Rudy Giuliani and police commissioner William Bratton popularized its use when they successfully implemented "broken windows" policies that saved New York City from a decades-long crime spiral.

Communist Mayor Bill de Blasio later framed "broken windows" policing as inherently racist, retreated from many sensible initiatives, and punished cops for proactively fighting crime.  The residents of NYC have subsequently paid the price with their deteriorating safety.

Such has been the much larger pattern throughout American society.  Cultural Marxists and other communist coalitions attack good and sound policies as racist, sexist, transphobic, or guilty of some other ugly -ic or -ist smear; those traditional standards of behavior are repudiated; and then Americans suffer the consequences of living in a society without norms, manners, or common decency.  Throwing bricks through America's windows while blaming others for their crimes, leftists have spent the last century engaging in purposeful destruction so as to bring about America's demise.  Throw a brick here; throw a brick there; eventually, Americans wake up in a nation where government tyrants nonchalantly lock up their political opponents, censorship is widespread, and young adults can no longer determine whether they are boys or girls.

family, faith, and community fellowship provide the backbone to any healthy society.  Constitutional protections, limited government, and respect for individual rights all begin around family life.  When people build strong homes, foster self-sufficiency, encourage hard work, value private property, and share inter-generational knowledge and support, they create the foundations for a free and prosperous society.  When they believe in a higher power, dedicate themselves to pursuing a moral life, and think beyond their own urges, they encourage the growth of civic virtue.  When they choose forgiveness over grievance, seek to put aside past conflicts, and find value in common defense, they transform communities into countries.  Simple seeds produce boundless harvests.

It should be no surprise, then, that cultural Marxists have dedicated their energies to the destruction of family, faith, and fellowship.  Where children are encouraged to reject their parents, the State becomes their family.  Where religion is denigrated as superstitious or dangerous, government is worshiped as a false god.  Where communities are pitted against one another and politicians insist on keeping citizens divided, disorder and chaos make self-government impossible and authoritarian government certain.

Why have Marxists been breaking America's windows for so many decades?  Because only in the rubble of societal ruin can communist tyranny reign supreme.  

With baseball back in action (albeit with seemingly never-ending rule changes), it is fun to look at old photos from Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, or Tiger Stadium.  Men attired in suits; women wearing long dresses, elegant hats atop their heads; and a general sense of decorum fill up every black-and-white scene.  Whatever rowdiness remains hidden from these old glimpses back in time, they serve as a reminder that society once fostered not only a concern for one's personal appearance, but also a mutual appreciation for public propriety.  Fashion was not strictly about comfort, but existed as a silent form of communication demonstrating good manners and respect for others.

Today, good manners and respect for others are out of fashion, if not obsolete.  Forget any "sirs," "madams," or "beg your pardons" from ever being uttered, but do expect to hear lurid vulgarity where you might once have least expected it.  Profanity and salty stories are nothing new, but their public proliferation is.  Just as with respectful fashions, courteous language is a sign of a sober mind possessing enough empathy to consider others within earshot.  Crass language and animalistic behavior are the hallmarks of unremitting egocentrism and perpetual adolescence.  In an era so drowning in debauchery that political leaders and schoolteachers believe it appropriate to introduce the youngest students to pornography and drag shows, though, it is easy to see how probity has been replaced with anything goes.  The obvious consequence is that self-reliant American adults have been replaced with a nation of children whom Daddy Government can choose to punish when bad and reward when well behaved.  That's how Marxists make slaves.

In a very short time, we have gone from holding doors for ladies, treating our elders with respect, and engaging in mutual courtesies to barely-there clothing, targeting elders as easy prey, and ludicrously labeling good manners as signs of "patriarchy" and "white supremacy."  The women in those black-and-white photos of Fenway Park still managed to seem perfectly alluring, but today's leftists believe that feminism requires "shouting your abortion" and letting confused men struggling with their own identities redefine womanhood.  The men in those photos still managed to convey dignity and self-respect regardless of their personal wealth, but today's leftists believe that masculinity is "toxic" and that good manners belong only to the upper class

These cultural transformations — what many Establishment Republicans derisively ignored as meaningless events in an unimportant "Culture War" — have proven to be tremendously consequential.  What started out as pebbles thrown against small windows of abandoned buildings turned into bricks demolishing whole glass walls once reflecting America's common mores and beliefs.  Those vandalized beliefs not only undermined society's moral foundations, but also left America like an ugly, forgotten building — broken and decayed.  In truth, Marxists' cultural destruction of America has far exceeded "broken windows" and more closely resembles the actions of a malevolent arsonist intent on setting fires, big and small, wherever opportunity arises.  And the cost of never putting those Marxist fires out when they were first set is today's raging inferno.

The U.S. government actively engages in viewpoint discrimination and political censorship.  J6 political prisoners rot in jail.  Churches are firebombed for refusing to redefine the institution of marriage or insisting on protecting the sanctity of every unborn life.  Children are sexually groomed in the classroom for the pleasure of perverted adults.  Medical doctors castrate and mutilate confused minors before they have had a chance to truly live.  News media spread endless waves of State-controlled propaganda while accusing political dissenters of being propagandists.  Intellectuals publish a bloated collection of narrow groupthink while accusing free thinkers of being too dumb to understand the issues.  Patriotic Americans who love their country are branded "domestic terrorists" while anti-American zealots who insist America is irredeemably racist are rewarded with prizes.  A presidential candidate who destroyed subpoenaed evidence and fabricated an international Russian conspiracy that divided the nation suffers no legal consequences, yet an elected president who took no salary while surviving one Deep State attack after the next is persecuted still today.  These are the rotten fruits of Marxist seeds.

All of this should make clear that America's problems cannot be solved through elections alone.  The bad roots must be ripped from the ground before we begin the hard work of healthy planting.  Before we repair all the broken windows, we must first face head-on those who do the breaking.  Before we build America back up, we must break down those who set fires for a living.

Dozens injured and arrested in violent clashes at Al-Aqsa Mosque

Violent clashes break out at Al-Aqsa Mosque as police officers attempt to evacuate Muslim worshipers who were holed up in the mosque.

Violent clashes broke out at Al-Aqsa Mosque overnight Tuesday, during an attempt by police officers to evacuate Muslim worshipers who were holed up in the mosque. According to Palestinian Arab reports, 45 people were injured.

Palestinian Arab channels claimed that stun grenades were thrown and rubber bullets were fired at the worshipers, who refused to leave the complex, while the Palestinian Arabs, on the other hand, fired fireworks at the Israeli forces.

In addition, the Palestinian Arabs claimed that a police force attacked the worshipers using batons and rifle butts.

The Israel Police said that clashes broke out between police forces and dozens of young people who barricaded themselves in Al-Aqsa Mosque and tried to disturb the order.

"After attempts to negotiate to remove the worshipers, the forces were forced to enter the compound," the police said, adding that rocks were thrown at the forces and fireworks were set off, and that dozens of suspects were arrested.

Ibrahim Al-Dabbas, a Muslim activist in Jerusalem, told Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV that Israel had committed a "crime" when it acted violently against Muslims at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Al-Dabbas called for Palestinian Arab aid from all sources, saying that Israel is trying to change the reality in the mosque. "The fascist Zionist government is taking advantage of the Jewish holidays to attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque" and "drag the region into a religious war," he charged.

The Islamic Jihad terrorist organization said that it is closely monitoring what is happening at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Muslim worshipers who were in the mosque called on the Al-Qassam Brigades to launch rockets towards Israel in response to the incident.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh commented on the clashes on the Temple Mount and said that they were an "unprecedented crime" and that there would be "consequences".

In late March, the Israel Police evacuated hundreds of worshipers who had barricaded themselves on the Temple Mount after the conclusion of prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and planned to sleep in the compound in order to disrupt public order during the morning hours.

The police said that the worshipers barricaded themselves in the compound in complete contradiction to an agreement with the Waqf and the rules of the place. It was also stated that no special means were used during the activity, and there were no disturbances or violent incidents.

According to Palestinian Arab reports, one person was arrested.

Last Friday night, clashes broke out near the mosque after police officers shot and killed an Arab terrorist who tried to steal a weapon from a Border Police officer who was stationed at the Chain Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The message Netanyahu might love to send to Joe Biden

If only he could have responded to Biden by saying what he really might be thinking, he might have said what I wrote below. Op-ed.

Israel has a corrupt Supreme Court that rules the country autocratically when it sees fit and reverses any Knesset (parliament) decision it chooses, overriding based simply on what the justices deem “reasonable” in their personal opinions. That Court has no standard of “justiciability,” so there is no issue they will not enter into.

-They will rewrite litigants’ business contracts based on what they deem to be reasonable.

-They have ruled on who is eligible to sit for rabbinical exams.

-They have no rule of “standing,” so anyone in the country can bring a case to them even on things that do not directly impact the petitioners.

-Most of the justices are extreme leftists, and they made self-perpetuating rules that assign to themselves who may or may not succeed them as justices, so they keep it all in-house. They appoint extreme-left successors and cancel out conservatives, middle-roaders, and even leftists who dare express opinions that the selection process should be more balanced.

-Meanwhile, the Attorney-General has tyrannical powers to order the head of government to stay out of urgent national issues like the instant effort to reform the courts.

Netanyahu’s government is trying to democratize the court system, and he has the parliamentary majority (64-56) to make it happen. The Israeli Left has watched in horror as their dominance from Israel’s founding has ended, and as the country has moved rightward from Marxism, secularism, and extremist state socialism as embodied by David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Moshe Dayan, and Ehud Barak. The country’s population has evolved into a moderately conservative and religion-friendly electorate, and the right keeps winning, election after election. As a result, having lost electoral dominance, the Israeli Left now leverages the unelected, self-perpetuating extreme leftist Supreme Court to run the country by regularly intervening in Knesset decisions and by gagging elected politicians (like the prime minister himself) from speaking on issues that the voters elected them to manage.

Because the Left media control both Israel’s mass communications and those of America, “news” media in both countries have been reporting absurdly on the effort to reform Israel’s Supreme Court as though it were a fascist power-grab aimed at ending all freedoms in Israel. The exact opposite is true.

If the way you know when a politician is lying is when his or her lips start moving, the same may be said of TV newscasts on CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Israel Kan Channel 11, Keshet Channel 12, and Reshet Channel 13. The New York Times and Washington Post are jammed with distortion, as are Haaretz, Maariv, and Yediot Acharonot. (Thank G-d for Arutz Sheva and Israel's Channel 14.)

And all of it has reached Joe Biden, who has nothing else to worry about.

So Biden just commented publicly to say that he has known Bibi for forty years as a friend, and friends sometimes need to be straightforward with their friends for their own good. Biden said: “Like many strong supporters of Israel, I'm very concerned. I'm concerned that they get this straight. They cannot continue down this road. I've sort of made that clear.”

Bibi responded that “I have known President Biden for over 40 years, and I appreciate his longstanding commitment to Israel. The alliance between Israel and the United States is unbreakable and always overcomes the occasional disagreements between us. My administration is committed to strengthening democracy by restoring the proper balance between the three branches of government, which we are striving to achieve via a broad consensus. Israel is a sovereign country which makes its decisions by the will of its people and not based on pressures from abroad, including from the best of friends.”

Bibi was being diplomatic, and that is why he continues as Israel’s longest-ever-serving prime minister. If only he could have responded to Biden by saying what he really might be thinking, he might have said this:

“Dear Joe. We have known each other for forty years, and I value our friendship. I was rather surprised that you recently interfered with Israel’s internal affairs, telling us what we should do to preserve and protect our democracy. We are trying to get things balanced here after thirty years of judicial tyranny. In your country, Joe, you name the Supreme Court judges, so you just named to your Court that idiot who cannot define what a woman is. In your system, all she needed was for the president to name her because she is a Black woman and for his party that controls the Senate to fall into line and approve her. We are trying simply to set up a similar system. In our country right now, by contrast, the people’s elected representatives do not control the judicial selection process; rather, the justices self-perpetuate and control the Supreme Court themselves as their inside club.

“Can you imagine, Joe, if you had the system we now have? Under our system, the justices select or veto the new justices. So, if you had the self-perpetuating system we are trying to fix, Justices Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett would add or veto new justices to your Court. Your nominee, who cannot define what a woman is,never would have gotten to first base, no matter what size the base is. Some of your Democrat colleagues are trying to pack your Court with six more justices of their mindset. We don’t do that. We are trying to find a balanced way of choosing justices, neither the US method or the current Israeli one, but something in between.

“But, Joe, I need to say a bit more because friends sometimes need to be honest with friends for their own good. I’m very concerned, Joe, about what is going on in America. I’m concerned that your country gets this straight. Your country cannot continue down this road. Since you feel comfortable telling us how to run our country, here are a few of my concerns:

“We control our borders here, Joe. Gaza is run by Hamas on our southwest border. Lebanon and Hezbollah are on our northwesterly border, and Syria next door. Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) and his Al Fatah are on our eastern border. So we control our borders, Joe, because we have to. We have built a big beautiful wall to keep the terrorists out — and it works. I have been reading about the millions illegally crossing your southern border, where your security is completely out of control. Our people can advise on how to save your country there.

“I also understand, Joe, that your schools teach children as young as the early grades about transgenderism, and you even have cross-dressing queens at school library hour. Although our society does not discriminate against people based on issues of gender, our school curricula differ, Joe. Our parents do not feel they have to scream at school board meetings to protect their children. Our schools and textbooks are not polluted with critical race theory and intersectionalism. Our kids learn real history, even some Bible, although the non-religious schools do not teach enough about Judaism. Not that your schools are any of our business, Joe, but our kids come out reading, writing, schooled in math and technology, knowing their history, and prepared for great things.

"Our 9 million population is about the size of New York City’s 8.84 million and only three percent of your country. Yet that small population with our schooling has seen our kids grow to create or significantly co-create the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, the Arrow 3, Waze GPS, the world’s smallest video camera (used in American endoscopies), the pillcam (a pill with a tiny camera for gastroenterologists to monitor), the flexible stent, the pressure bandage for urgent life saving, Azilect for treating Parkinson’s disease, the USB flash drive, the Intel 8088 microprocessor, the laser keyboard, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Pentium MMX, Apple Thunderbolt, the network firewall, the first instant messaging service, Windows XP and Windows NT, Microsoft Security Essentials, Babylon computer translation, the cherry tomato, drip irrigation systems, SodaStream, Epilator, Rummikub, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

"Our schools do that, even without transgender studies.

“Joe, we hear about Saturday nights in Chicago and about skyrocketing crime in your inner cities. We certainly have some crime here, too, but our cities are quite safe. After all, we have Arab Muslim terrorists aiming to hurt us. It’s just that we do not use our guns on each other.

"Maybe it is because we have better programs for treating the mentally ill and for keeping lunatics off the streets. Maybe because our society is more traditional with greater respect for parents and for authority. Maybe because a majority of our population, even among our non-Orthodox, respect G-d, refrain from eating bread on Passover, and fast on Yom Kippur. Maybe our respect for tradition plays a role in not having all those mass shootings. Your problems in Chicago, Memphis, and all your other centers of urban crime really are none of my business, Joe. But since we are such good friends sharing concerns, I am concerned for your country. I am concerned you get this right. You cannot continue on this road.

“There are so many issues of governance that I deal with, Joe — like assuring that trains do not derail, that our mothers have adequate access to baby formula, that we extract all natural resources of energy available to us, and that our banking system is competently regulated — but I presume you already have those under control. That’s the easy stuff.

“Thanks again for offering your good advice on how Israel should govern itself. I hope I have reciprocated collegially. That’s what friends are for.

"Hey Dick, let's get a few things straight!!!

1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole (tit) for FORTY YEARS.

2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63).

3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give OUR money to a bunch of zero losers in return for votes, thus bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff proud.

4. Recently, just like Lucy & Charlie Brown, you and "your ilk" pulled the proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to age, 67. NOW, you and your "shill commission" are proposing to move the goalposts YET AGAIN.

5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare from Day One, and now "you morons" propose to change the rules of the game. Why? Because "you idiots" mismanaged other parts of the economy to such an extent that you need to steal our money from Medicare to pay the bills.

 US-Israel tensions will pass; Netanyahu knows Biden won't win in 2024

Despite the division in Israel, and the division in the US, the one issue unifying Washington is the bipartisan, almost unanimous, support of Israel. And that’s all that matters.

The president of the United States, arguably the most powerful person in the world, publicly chastised the prime minister of Israel. Publicly chastised! But – and here’s the good news, the situation is not as dire as it appears.

Israel and the US have always had a big brother/younger brother relationship. And like all siblings, they fight. They quibble. They say awful things to each other. But they will always be there for each other. In fact, the reason they feel comfortable saying those awful things is because they know that they will always be there for each other.

These tensions, as high and dramatic as they are, will pass. But not just yet. 

The most visible, the most public way for Biden to “dis” Bibi is by holding back on that traditional invite to the White House. For decades, every incoming Israeli prime minister would visit the White House. The tradition grew to resemble a rite of passage. Soon after assuming the mantel of leadership in Jerusalem, the prime minister makes the pilgrimage to Washington, DC to meet with the sitting US president.

The trip had many purposes. On the personal side, for some it was a first meeting and a “get to know you” chat. Israel and the US are such close allies and work so closely together on so many issues, it was important for the leaders to really get to know each other.

On the public side, the president and prime minister would reiterate a commitment to mutual support. On the security side, they would agree that Israel’s nuclear technology and weapons were properly secured and would be utilized responsibly.

Most importantly, they would agree that the US has Israel’s back and that the US would actively engage and defend Israel in any multi-front war against her attackers. For certain, other items would be discussed by the various presidents and prime ministers, issues that, based on their personalities, we can only speculate about.

Historically, the meetings were always conducted behind closed doors.  Afterward, there was always a press conference. That was the opportunity for these world leaders to charm the media. The smiles and handshakes and pats on the back appeared genuine, and usually were. But the audience they were playing for was not their respective local audience. 

It was essential for the security of Israel, for the security of the region, and in the best interest of the US, for the world to see that the relationship between Israel and the US – the warm relationship, the cordial relationship, the “we-are-on-the-same-page” relationship between these two nations – continues even though the leadership has changed.

BY BREAKING with tradition, the White House is trying to teach Jerusalem a lesson. They are minimizing the brush-off by using a historical argument. They claim that Biden has known Netanyahu for 40 years and that they already have a strong and very friendly relationship. But the world needs to see it in action. And right now, what the world has heard Biden say belies that explanation.

It is obvious that Washington is not pleased with his new government, especially Netanyahu’s push for judicial reform. And despite the decades of warm friendship between the two leaders, Netanyahu does not care that Biden is displeased.

Netanyahu knows Biden won't be re-elected and that the US is divided

Netanyahu has almost certainly determined that he can weather the storm. He has calculated that Biden cannot and will not be re-elected. No matter which victor emerges in the 2024 US election for president – Republican or Democrat – it will not be Biden. That realization gives Netanyahu peace of mind. He will be friendly to the sitting US president, but Netanyahu is behaving as if Biden is a lame duck.

The non-invite to Washington, aka the invite which will come whenever it comes, does not trouble Jerusalem. If it did, Jerusalem would be lobbying hard for the meeting. And they are not lobbying at all.

This White House does not understand that Israel today is a divided country. It is split nearly perfectly in half. The division is not just about judicial reform, it is about almost everything. And it is certainly split – especially split, about Netanyahu.

And this is where Israel has the upper hand. The US is also split, right down the middle, and not just about former president Donald Trump and his indictment. You see it in the television ratings war, where it is Fox vs the others. Congress is split, with the House of Representatives for the Republicans; the Senate for the Democrats. The US is wrenched right down the middle.

Israel understands the United States. The Prime Minister’s Office is feeling secure. They see these divisions in the US. Most importantly, they know that their real friendships rest in Congress and not the White House. And they know that regardless of what happens regarding judicial reform, the friendship, the family ties between the US and Israel will remain intact.

Despite the division in Israel, and the division in the US, the one issue unifying Washington is the bipartisan, almost unanimous, support of Israel. And that’s all that matters.

Only This Judicial Reform Can Save Israel From Dictatorial Supreme Court

(APRIL 4, 2023 / JERUSALEM POST) The Israeli government’s decision to delay enacting badly-needed, reasonable, democratic judicial reforms brings to mind the famous adage, “justice delayed is justice denied.

Delaying the judicial reform can enable the court to continue to ignore laws passed by Israel’s elected government; decide cases based on a judge’s subjective (left-wing) views of what’s reasonable; fail to require or examine evidence when acting as the High Court of Justice; decide cases where no party has standing; and perpetuate its extraordinary power by controlling sufficient seats on a judicial selection committee to enable the justices to select their own successors.

A delay can enable the unelected, self-appointed Israeli Supreme Court to maintain its tyrannical power over Israel’s democratically-elected branches of government. On March 19, during the height of the recent debate over judicial reform, the Supreme Court demonstrated its lawless, dictatorial control over the elected branches of government again by ruling that Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir cannot issue direct or indirect operational orders to Israeli police forces.

How else can delaying judicial reform endanger Israel?

A delay can also enable the court to decide even more cases that violate Israel’s democratically-enacted laws; interfere with Israeli security, military actions and sovereignty; and jeopardize Israeli lives.

A delay will moreover reward the left-wing opposition, which lost the November 2022 election, for refusing offers to discuss compromise and instead endangering the country by violently clashing with police and blocking ports, the airport and roads, while Palestinian Arabs perpetuate multiple life-threatening terror attacks every day.
